PROJECT DESCRIPTION Martin Hartig teaches a Grade 6/7 we learned that when students are split class of 29 French Immersion doing lots of hands-on work it isn't students. TECH TOOL SPOTLIGHT IMOVIE We used iMovie with a Grade 3 buddy class as part of their Fractured Fairy Tales activity. Students wrote original stories and then we invited them to create book trailers to entice their peers to read them. Our process: *review existing Book Trailers on Youtube *co-create criteria for a successful book trailer *use a Story Map to plan 6 frames with images, sounds and narration *record an introduction in Green Screen in front of a background that illustrates the story theme. *assemble all frames into one movie project and compare against success criteria. When using any digital recording app, issues of protection and privacy should be discussed with students.
PROJECT OUTCOMES Martin created a survey to collect students' appraisals of the Synergy Project. All 29 students participated. A summary of their responses: 1. Most students preferred the Book Creator app. 2. The iPads were accessible, easy to use and made learning fun.
3. Overall, students found the iPads to be a useful learning tool. 4. Students told us this is what they liked about having iPads in the classroom: ~voice to text ~vocabulary studies ~dictionary apps ~ease of access (don't have to leave the class to use a computer) ~makes learning fun ~connecting with portfolios 5. We asked students if they had any other suggestions for our iPad implementation: ~add math games ~make sure Word works properly ~less instruction; just let us try things out ~make sure people are using the iPads for serious learning not just being entertained--other people are waiting to use them ~more small group instruction ~divide the class and let one person use an iPad while someone else is doing their math or something and then switch

TECH TOOL SPOTLIGHT PicCollage We started our iPad app explorations with PicCollage, directing students' creative energies toward the creation of posters illustrating our rules for iPad handling. You can see sample posters on p. 3 of our report. Pic Collage is an app that can be easily integrated into any curriculum. Students can combine photos, Youtube videos, fonts, stickers, and cutouts to create collages. They can also save and print completed collages or share on social media. Remind students of fair use when using Internet images for their PicCollage creations. The "Visual Communication Guy" has fair use guidelines on his site. (Click the lightbulb to view.)
Project Challenges Martin's class is very action-oriented, with students designing, creating, working on hands-on projects, exploring the forest, cutting down ivy and scotch broom, raising fish and planting native shrubs. We thought the iPads would be a natural way to document these processes and write about our learning, but sometimes they just seemed to get in the All students way. contributed a block to the giant class Jenga. We also had technology issues. We would Our iPad project was prepare to demo an app only to find out that like the blocks: students had different accesses or versions, sometimes we their interface looked different, or the process imagined, sometimes (e.g. QR codes) just didn't work at all. Our we dreamed, and learning really lost momentum when this every now and then happened. we failed and the whole lesson plan crumbled.
TECH TOOL SPOTLIGHT EXPLAIN EVERYTHING This was by far the most difficult app to teach and use. It is loaded with features, which made it a really promising choice for older students' increasingly sophisticated projects. Unfortunately, we lost many of the features when our trial subscription ended. We didn't realize that we had to be in another mode to keep additional functionalities and, without all the cool tools, students lost interest in using this app. As teachers gain more experience with Explain Everything, and share their own multi-media presentations with students, it could eventually overtake Powerpoint as the presentation medium of choice. Everyone on the team needs more time and experience with this app. Remind students to respect and protect intellectual property, and to be mindful of creating a positive digital footprint.
PROJECT SUCCESSES New technologies and evolving methods of communication and sharing drive expanding understandings of literacy in today's classroom. This reality has made the acquisition and demonstration of strong literacy skills more important than ever. Exploring and connecting various ways of knowing is part of the process of personalizing learning and involves embracing new literacies and skills. Martin's students communicated their hands-on learning through iPad documentation and sharing. They have been using technology in a completely unique fashion and mastering a highly specialized vocabulary along the way. Browsing the iPad projects students have created reveals the extent of French language learning that occurs alongside their creative endeavours. While the iPads may have been an encumbrance during hands-on activities, they were a powerful tool for creating texts to share these experiences with others.

La perceuse à colonne Celui-ci est la perceuse à colonne. Ça perce les trous dans le bois droit et direct. On utilise en ce moment pour les jeux de crib.
TECH TOOL SPOTLIGHT BOOK CREATOR For several years, Martin's early immersion class has teamed up with the late immersion class to build paddles that are an important symbol of students' journeys into deeper waters as they take part in the Strathcona Park Lodge trip--their last elementary school excursion. This year, Martin's class experimented with Book Creator's pen, text (typing), sound, shape, image and sticker tools. The text tool offers speech-to-text to for easier typing and spelling. Students used the app to create woodworking tutorials for their late immersion peers, introducing them to French terms for all manner of woodshop tools and techniques. Book Creator projects can be exported with full interactive content for viewing on any device. Remind students to be mindful of school district acceptable use policy: "I will not make audio or video recordings of another student or teacher without his/her permission."

NOTES FOR NEXT TIME We began this project with a sweeping focus: a science inquiry fair with links to language arts and the core competencies. We ended with an authentic language learning experience, with students acquiring and practicing technology-specific vocabulary. Since infusing iPads into everyday classroom learning was new to us, it would have been a better idea to attach our project to something familiar. In future projects, we would ask: what are we already doing that could be transformed by the addition of digital technology? In Martin's class, the natural answer was bricolage. When digital technology is applied to familiar tasks, children find unique ways to make sense of what they've learned.
