Preparing for worship On the first Sunday of every month at Wilshire It is a table where I’ve heard my dad offer the we celebrate communion. February 7, 2021 Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany Chiming of the Hour Prelude I Come with Joy arr. David Cherwien Call to Worship — Psalm 147:1a, 5–11, 20c Helen Jerman Praise the Lord! Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The Lord lifts up the downtrodden; he casts the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre. He covers the heavens with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the animals their food, and to the young ravens when they cry. His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner; but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. Praise the Lord! ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya! ¡Alabado sea el Señor! Hymn 319 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty lobe den herren 3
Greeting to Worshipers Jenna Sullivan Prayers of the People Jennifer Wagner Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, And the glory forever. Amen. Solo Panis Angelicus César Franck Zoë Moore Panis angelicus fit panis hominum; May the bread of angels become the bread for humanity; Dat panis cœlicus figuris terminum: This heavenly bread ends all symbols: O res mirabilis! Oh, miraculous thing! Manducat Dominum pauper, servus et humilis. Feasting at this table nourishes the poor, the lowly and the humbled ones. Celebration of the Lord’s Supper George Mason All followers of Christ are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper, whether you are a Wilshire member or not. Today, you are invited to gather whatever elements you have at home to join in the Communion of the saints at the Lord’s Table. The Passing of the Peace May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Gospel Reading — Mark 1:29–39 Darren DeMent As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they 4
said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gracias a Dios. Missions & Christian Advocacy Committees meet the moment A s a church for Every Body, Wilshire has a keen sense of responsibility to serve and advocate for others, especially in offering mis- sion programs and monitoring public policies on behalf of the poor and vulnerable. In 2021, about 30 Wilshire folks will be involved on both the Missions and Christian Ad- vocacy Committees. They will work to support — and in many cases, work alongside — over 10 formal local missions and advocacy part- ners. Wilshire is blessed to have deep relational connections to many others working in the non-profit, civil and advocacy sectors. As it relates to our advocacy work, priorities are selected through a formal and informal discernment process. Committee members explore questions such as, “Does this priority Recent mission and advocacy efforts included (clockwise from top) seem to match with what Wilshire has expressed the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive, benefiting White Rock Center of Hope; brown bag lunches for Cornerstone Baptist Church last as a common concern?
