2 Pastor’s Page - February 2021 “The Lord has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)” Happy New Year! I pray that the new year has brought you joy and hope in the Lord! Following the challenging year in 2020, I am grateful for the resilience and faith of our congregation. Thank you for your flexibility, patience, and ongo- ing support of our ministries. On December 24, we celebrated our online Christmas Eve service. Thank you to everyone who pre-recorded readings and musical offerings. Thank you to everyone who served as liturgists and AV techs. While it was not ideal to worship apart from each other, we gathered for worship and celebrated the birth of our Savior. After Christmas, my family was able to get away for several days. We spent a few quiet days at a retreat center where we could recharge and reconnect with each other. I am grateful for the SPRC support of my time away. One of the highlights from the retreat was walking on an outdoor labyrinth. It was covered in snow when we arrived, but I found it and cleared the space. Every day, I found myself drawn to walk along with the steps of the labyrinth in the morning, afternoon, and evening. As I walked, I heard only the sounds of my footsteps and breathing. This walk became a time of prayer. (The picture above is a picture of me walking on this labyrinth.) As I circled the steps of the labyrinth, I lift- ed up prayers for vision, MUMC’s future, my pastoral plans, and our congregation. I felt the encouragement and pres- ence of the Holy Spirit with each step. In some ways, 2021 is an extension of 2020. As we await the administration of the vaccine, we have to protect one an- other and follow all safety guidelines. We need to continue to be patient, resilient, and flexible this year. In East Asian culture, 2021 is the year of the ox. The ox is known for its patience and resilience. I encourage us to em- brace the virtues of the ox this year. Instead of grumbling, let’s be grateful for each day and patiently watch the COVID -19 positivity rate drop. Instead of getting frustrated and angry about canceled and/or postponed events, let’s find hope in the positive things we are still able to do. Instead of being doubtful and cynical about ongoing safety regulations, let’s find joy in God’s simple gifts every day. We have endured so much as a nation (and world,) but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. With faith and hope in Jesus, I am confident that MUMC will emerge from the pandemic stronger than before. In several weeks, we will begin the season of Lent. This is the season of 40 days preparing ourselves for the celebration of Easter. During Lent, I invite you to join our Lenten Bible Study on the kings and prophets of 1 & 2 Kings. The cur- riculum is entitled, “Set Apart,” by Jessica LaGrone. This curriculum will help us grow and deepen our faith. Stay tuned for more information about sign-ups. As we approach Easter, may we learn to “act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8). I am excited to serve alongside the new MUMC leaders of MUMC, who were consecrated on Jan. 10th. I ask for our congregation to pray for our 2021 leaders and support them as they lead our ministries throughout the year. 2021 will be a vital time in MUMC’s history as we start building and transitioning our ministry to Ridge Rd. As we wrap up our January sermon series, “Heal us, Lord,” I pray that all of you are taking small steps (today) to make yourself stronger and healthier (tomorrow). Every week, we have covered a different area of health: physical, relation- al, financial, etc. In the first two weeks of February, we will focus on the topics of friendship and companionship. I encourage you to invite family and friends to these services that will focus on strengthening our marriage and friend- ships. Friends, life is a beautiful journey. While there are those unexpected and painful twists and turns, there are beautiful sights and unforgettable experiences along the way. Of course, life is better when we walk with companions who can love and laugh and serve one another. May God bless MUMC as we journey through 2021 together. Let’s remember to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author of our faith. Let’s be patient and faithful as we heed the invitation of Jesus Christ, who calls us to boldly take new steps of faith. Pastor Sarah

It flows from knowing that God is in control, this is His world. Peace flows from time spent in His presence. It flows through hearing Him speak to us in His word and by His Spirit. It flows from giving all that troubles us to Him and trusting that He will direct and guide us. God gives us His peace in the hurried, broken, impatient world. We all need His peace. “The Lord sits enthroned over the flood, the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people, the Lord blesses his peo- ple with peace.” (Psalm 29:10-11). Sometimes it seems as if the demands of life conspire to keep us from God. In this moment Lord, quiet our hearts and minds, and breath peace into our souls as we wait on You. In Christ, Pearl Lindley, Certified Lay Servant

5 Finance Committee MUMC Finance Committee Highlights All things considered for 2020, MUMC had a good year financially. In accounting terms, we ended the year in the black. We were able to achieve this because of your faithful generosity. Our committees did a very good job of monitoring their spending as well. A big thank you goes out to everyone for your ongoing support of our mission here at MUMC. As we start opening things up, the offering plate will remain in the back of the sanctuary so please drop off your offering in the plate as you walk by. If you are not worshiping with us in person, you can mail in your offering or take advantage of the e-offering option. If you have questions regarding the e-offering, please reach out to Mary Ray.
