Volunteers from AARP TaxAide will once again be offering their services to prepare your 2019 taxes for free beginning Tuesday, February 4th. The volunteers are here from 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in February and Wednesdays and Thursdays in March and April. The last day is Wednesday, April 9th. This assistance is free and open to the public. No appointments are available, it is first come, first serve. Signup is in the Atrium on the 1st Floor. You do not need to be an AARP member and it is open to all ages. To learn more about this free program, check out our website or click here. Art Exhibit Opening - Bangor Bookmark Project 2020 Thursday, February 6, 2020 @ 5:30 PM The Library will be holding an art exhibit opening for the Bangor Bookmark Project 2020. There will be a brief presentation and several of the artists will be on hand to talk about their artwork. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. Artwork and submission forms for the Bookmark Project 2020 must be submitted to the Library (sorry, no digital submissions) on Friday, January 31st between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. To learn more about this and future art exhibits, check out our website or click here. The opening is the unofficial Kick-Off of our Maine Bicentennial Celebration. Throughout the year, the Library will presenting artwork, author visits, programs, workshops and more all in celebration of Maine's Bicentennial. Be sure to keep checking our website and future newsletters to learn more about all of these great events highlighting Maine's wonderful history. Humanities Day 2020 The 8th Annual Bangor Humanities Day on Saturday, February 1st will celebrate music, art, history, literature and other humanities disciplines at venues throughout downtown Bangor. The free public event is sponsored by the Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center at the University of Maine. From lectures, crafts and art exhibits, to improv, poetry readings and more, join us as we celebrate the creativity of the human spirit. The day will kick off here at the Library at 10:00 am with live music and events will occur during the day throughout downtown Bangor. MMCC Presents: Understanding Islam w/ Omar Conteh Tuesday, February 18th @ 6:00 PM (Snow Date: February 19th @ 6:00 PM ) A native of Gambia, West Africa, Omar Conteh immigrated to Maine as a youngster in 1997. He attended Bangor Schools, holds a baccalaureate degree in Mental Health and Human Services from the University of Maine at Augusta, and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine at Orono. He is presently a clinical psychotherapist living in Bangor with his wife and daughter. A devout Muslim, Omar is the Outreach Coordinator for the Islamic Center of Maine at Orono. For his presentation, Omar will provide an overview of Islamic beliefs, tenets and practices, and he will also conduct a follow-up Q and A session. SCORE Mentors Lunch & Learn Webinar: Building an E-commerce Based Small Business Thursday, February 20th @ 11:30 am Join us for another SCORE Mentors Lunch & Learn Webinar at the Bangor Public Library. Come network with other business-minded folks and learn a bit on your lunch hour. Bring your brown bag lunch and join the discussion! Please be sure to pre-register. Starting Seeds Indoors Saturday, February 22nd @ 2:00 PM This hands-on workshop will be a chance for home gardeners to review best practices for starting vegetable and ornamental seedlings indoors. Participants will have the opportunity to sow seeds to bring home and nurture. We will have seeds donated by our seed swap sponsors out and available to take home. We will also have information on more upcoming events that are part of the Seed Swap Program. Presented by University of Maine Cooperative Extension Horticulturist, Kate Garland. This event is brought to you as part of the Bangor Public Library's Seed Swap Program. Carol Dana (Penobscot) will share traditional Penobscot stories, Atlohkewi "Tell Me a Story" during this multi-week series.
