FALL 2021 Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church Special Points of Interest: Ministry Fair page 2 Stephen Ministry page 5 Trunk or Treat page 7 It has been a little bit since our last OKTOBERFEST, so this year will be a little different. Most of the vendors will be outside, a few inside. This will give us the opportunity to have a larger eating area, more raffles, games, food, a silent auction, music and more! We hope you will join us on October 23 to once again celebrate OKTOBERFEST! If you are interested in having a table at the OKTOBERFEST, please contact Danielle Johnson at the church office. Applications will be in the office or also on our website. W E L CO M E H O M E PA ST O R BR AD ! Page 3 Digital Ministry - by Holly Lail Thank you to all who responded to the survey over the last couple of months! We understand that Social Media isn’t for everybody. However, we believe that it can be used as a tool to reach more people for God’s Kingdom. I would like to thank our Facebook Hosts who do a wonderful job each week to wel- come our partners and visitors who watch us on Facebook. Another shout-out goes to Doug Fletcher & Joe Temple who helped out with replacing cables for the sound system in early August. These men have stepped up to help us behind the scenes as needed. We still need more volunteers for the AV Team. For the 9:30 am service, we need someone to run the sound in the Control Room. It’s just controlling the sound of the voices and instruments. Another need is for the 11 am Sound in the Sanctuary and controlling the slides. Please reach out to Holly or Eric if you are interested in helping out. How do you recognize Shepherd of the Sea? Is it a picture of the building? The logo? The mission state- ment? Well, a couple of weeks ago we got mail from SOS. Immediately my 2 year old son pointed to the photo and said “church”. He knows what the church looks like at his young age. How do you describe SOS to your friends? By the building? Do you share the mission statement with your friends? Part of the book that the FaceBook (FB) team has been reading “From Grace to Gigabytes” by Ryan M. Panzer, talked about a church’s mission statement. When I was reading this part of the book, I immediately thought about one of 7 Basic Premises of SOS - The church exists for those who are not yet members. But this isn’t the mission statement. The mission statement of SOS is found on the back of the newsletter, it states: “Our mission is to serve our Savior and care for all, to that end we will: LIVE together as GOD’s faithful, caring family; WORSHIP GOD, sharing in Word and Sacrament, TEACH GOD’s Word and tell GOD’s story; SERVE all people, following the example of our Lord JESUS; RESPOND as stewards, giving to GOD as GOD has given to us.” Our digital book study team is looking into how to live out the church’s mission statement in digital ministry. During the month of September, we will meet via zoom (date to be announced via FB & announcements) to discuss ideas from the books we have read and to get a plan in place to go over with Pastor Brad when he gets back. If you have any ideas, you are welcome to join us! Contact Holly Lail if you have any questions at av.shepcluth@gmail.com.
Page 4 The Carol Hummel Food Pantry Report The Food Pantry is forever growing and offering more to our clients. In June we started offering Senior Boxes. These are boxes for the clients 60 years old and older. This helps give them shelf-stable food products to help offset their monthly living costs. Also, the food pantry has started a “Virtual Store” - this is when we have had clients attend a class to help them identify healthier choices of food and how to shop for their daily proteins, dairy, etc.… Next we are starting a 6-weeks cooking course. This will teach individuals how to cook some of the more difficult items they receive with from us or the grocery store. They will be given recipes and the ingredients of what to cook, and how to cook it. At the end of the 6-week class, one lucky winner will win a new cookware set. In addition, We are now rescuing food from Food Lion, Starbucks, and Lowe’s Food! Thank you to all the volunteers who do weekly pick-ups at these partnering companies. We are averaging serving 450 people through the food pantry. Our monthly average of individuals fed is staying around 1100-1200 individuals. Thank you GLYASDI Danielle Johnson Be Our Guest on Wednesday for Lunch! Every Wednesday, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm All people from around the South Strand are invited to come and enjoy a free meal at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church. Churches from the area are working together to serve a great lunch for the community. If you are hungry, you are invited! If you are struggling to make ends meet, you are invited! If you are tired of eating alone at home or at work, you are invited! If you would just like to meet some new people while enjoying a delicious meal, you are invited! This is our gift to the community. We hope Community Lunch will become a gathering place for all people in the South Strand. Around the table, we will share a meal while also having the opportunity to get to know our neighbors. Our vision is for no one in our community to go hungry or to feel isolated during lunch on Wednesdays. We look forward to seeing YOU at Community Lunch this Wednesday!!! Flower Sign-up The Flower sign-up sheets are in the Narthex. Each week we try to have two vases of cut flowers for the altar. If you would like to purchase flowers in memory or honor of a person or event, please sign up and complete an Altar Flowers Purchase form and make sure to attach a check for the total amount, which is $40 per vase.
