WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Knowing Christ…..Making Christ Known YOUTH SUNDAY May 23, 2021 9:00 A.M. Traditional Live Stream Worship GATHERING THOUGHT Peter and Joh, it is Babel crashing about your ears. The Spirit, impatient of gross and exquisite tongues, of known and unknown gods, has riven the abominable tower The undivided tongues are abroad, are a wildfire. You; never again constrained by scarecrow gestures, by hem or haw. You; to see agonized at the crowd's edge, the faces emptied of guile, their human wisdom consumed in a stench of straw. "The Big Wind" by Daniel Berrigan
ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD May 16, 2021 9:00 A.M. PRELUDE Blessed Assurance Traditional Melanie Flynn and Ron Evans WELCOME (Please fill out the guest book form online.) CHORAL INTROIT I Will Joyful Sing McDonald CALL TO WORSHIP Adam Trojanowski Leader: God's Spirit moves throughout the earth People: young and old alike. Leader: We shall see visions and dream dreams People: of God’s beloved community. All: Let us worship in spirit and in truth. HYMN Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us Come, O Spirit, dwell among us; come with Pentecostal power; Give the church a stronger vision; help us face each crucial hour. Built upon a firm foundation, Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone, Still the church is called to mission That God’s love shall be made known. We would raise our alleluias for the grace of yester-years; For tomorrow’s unknown pathway, Hear, O Lord, our humble prayers. In the church’s pilgrim journey you have led us all the way; Still in presence move before us, fire by night and cloud by day. Come, O Spirit, dwell among us; give us words of fire and flame. Help our feeble lips to praise you, glorify your holy name. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in One: what mystery! We would sing our loud hosannas now and through eternity. UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION Vivian Stilley O God, we confess that we often fear what we do not know - within ourselves and others. We fear the darkness of the unknown. We are afraid of what loving our neighbor may cost us. We are afraid of what we might lose and we lose sight of what we might gain. God, forgive us for the ways in which we intentionally and unintentionally have hurt our neighbors. Hear our silent prayers, which we offer to you now. (time for silent prayers of confession.)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, the voice of Jesus calls to us reminding that we are loved. In Christ we find ourselves among God’s family – welcomed and loved. This is the good news – in Jesus Christ we are forgiven. People: Thanks be to God! RESPONSE #582 Glory to God Whose Goodness Shines on Me APOSTLES’ CREED Megan Schulte I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. MOMENT FOR CHILDREN AND PASSING THE PEACE PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Bella Brun and Sammie Brun Holy Spirit, we circle the world with the flame of your love, and pray for peace and justice where there is war and inequality; for dancing and joy in place of oppression and the daily grind of poverty like people who do not have enough food to eat or a place to call home. May all enjoy the feast of life. Leader: Your will be done People: On earth, as in heaven Lady Wisdom, we circle this place with the flame of Your love – and thank You for friends and fun, for gifts and talents. We pray for Your peace in our hearts as we journey along together, and for a knowledge of Your gifts within us. Leader: Your will be done People: On earth, as in heaven Healing Spirit, we circle with Your blessing all those who will be born today. Protect them and cherish them, loving God...we circle with Your healing love all those who are enduring illness or disease especially families who are dealing with coronavirus. Be with them in their suffering, O God. And we circle with Your glorious light, all those who will die today. Take them into Your arms and embrace them, O God... Leader: Your will be done People: On earth, as in heaven Hear our prayers, and bless us living God. Hold the secret longings of our hearts in the mystery of Your love, that the light of the Kingdom will continue to shine on the earth and help us live by the words You taught us to pray…
.…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever, Amen. OFFERTORY A Joyful Song to the Lord Drennan DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Generous God, we give thanks for the many gifts we’ve received. Out of gratitude we offer what we have back to the service of Your kingdom in our local community and abroad. In Your name we pray, Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON Acts 2: 1-21 Kayla Walter When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ Pastor: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
