FAITH EVANGELICAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Creating Connections MAY 2021 Through Extending Christ’s Love A Pastoral Letter Greetings in Jesus Christ, We are already approaching May. Today it is over 80 degrees outside. Nice warm or even hot weather! We missed this kind of weather for so long. I hope everybody loved and enjoyed these recent days. While I was preparing parts for the Lighthouse for May, I had a chance to review the pictures I took during the past month. I usually try to take pictures of our church people or worship services for the Lighthouse because we easily forget what amazing things we have done together with those special ministries unless we record them. I am so proud of our church people including the Chrysalis children. The church should be a place where we worship the Lord, where we nurture each other, where we grow in faith by teaching, preaching, and training for our spiritu- ality. The word “Chrysalis” can be defined as “a quiescent insect pupa, especially of a butterfly or moth, the splitting of the chrysalis and the slow unfolding of the wings, and a transitional state” (quoted from Oxford language diction- ary). It means that it is not fully developed yet and in a transitional state to being fully grown up. I love the name of Chrysalis for our youth group. It is very inspirational and spiritual. For Easter Sunrise Worship, Chrysalis had been gathering to do some art work, record their au- dio parts for the play, and have rehearsals for the play. I am sure that God has been watching over their passion, efforts, and love for Easter, Jesus Christ, and Faith Evangelical UMC through Chrys- alis children and leaders. It is so true that we all are created differently with diverse gifts and talents. Each individual’s personality had been contributing to collaborative work which is God’s kingdom work. Each in- dividual’s personality had been enriched by practices for prayer, wor- ship, service and other forms of soul work that draws us closer to God. Not only Chrysalis children and leaders, but we all need to remember that we are Chrysalis. We are working toward Christian Perfection (John Wesley’s theology) but are not yet there. Even though we have been Christian for so long, we always need to remember that we should be humble and always be willing to confess our sins whenever it happens. Let us admit that we are not perfect which means that we sometimes make mistakes, dislike certain things, and ignore valuable things. Thus, we always remember our Lord and work toward our Lord our God who is always on our side crying, cheering, and caring. Many blessings on this great spring weather to you all! Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect. UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CONFERENCE The NIC Anti-Racism Task Force released a statement saying while some say justice was served in the George Floyd case, we need to continue the work of "building love for neighbor into our sys- tems and to live out justice and righteousness in concrete ways. Statement from Northern Illinois Conference Anti- Racism Task Force: April 20, 2021 With the conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd, some are saying that justice has been served. Indeed it is right that a guilty verdict was ren- dered where there was indisputable evidence of a crime. But as Christians who know that the word justice means more than punishment, our hearts are heavy be- cause no conviction would have been able to bring back beloved Black child of God, George Floyd. The most common word pairing in the Hebrew Bible is “justice and righteousness,” reminding us that justice does not stand alone; God calls us to create a world where all people are treated with dignity, re- spect, equality, and love. There is still much work to be done to build love for neighbor into our systems and we lift up the modern-day prophets who have long been calling us to live out justice and righteousness in concrete ways. Yet, this is still a moment of sorrow and grief because we re- member the life of George Floyd who was murdered before he had an opportunity to do all God was calling him to do in this life, just as too many people of color have been. We grieve because this kind of accountability of racist violence of a former police officer is still so rare. We grieve be- cause we have too often witnessed our systems fail and give in to the demons of white suprema- cy. May our grief give way to meaningful action, that we would create a world in which the words of the prophet Amos would be fulfilled: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” _____________________________________________________________________________ AC2021 Important Dates The 2021 Northern Illinois Annual Conference with the theme "Jesus Makes a Way" will convene using a virtual format July 16-17 with Interim Bishop John Hopkins presiding.
