Faculty of Education Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Training 2020/21 Early Years Education Faculty of Education
Department of Early Years Education Our departmental CPD sessions are aimed at students, staff and early years practitioners/teachers working in partner schools and settings. Sessions are designed and delivered by our own expert Early Years Education tutors and partners at Edge Hill University and are free to attend. Date: Wednesday 21st October 2020 Time: 4.00-6.00pm An Introduction to Attachment theory and practice Learn about theoretical perspectives and recent research related to attachment theory; Appreciate the impact of early attachments on children’s learning and development; Make connections between attachment theory and the Key Person approach; Discuss strategies of using attachment theory in practice and the challenges associated with it. Date: Thursday 5th November 2020 Time: 2.00-3.30pm Early Years SENCo: Leadership and Co-ordination This session will explore guidance and expectations related to the role of the SENCo in Early Years settings. There will be consideration of the leadership element of this role and the importance of ensuring all staff are aware of their responsibilities. The essential attributes for a collaborative and co-ordinated approach to supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities will be discussed and reflected upon. Date: Wednesday 11th November 2020 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Working with Families and Supporting the Home Learning Environment This session aims to reinforce the practitioner’s relationship in working together with parents and families by exploring a strengths based model to enable you to support parents and carers in enhancing their child’s learning. Date: Thursday 19th November 2020 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Counting and the Four Operations This session aims to focus on the theory behind counting and in particular the counting principles by Gelman and Gallistel. We will explore the errors and misconceptions that children make whilst counting and identify activities that can help address these misconceptions. The second part of the session will look at the different mathematical structures for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division across EYFS and Key Stage 1. Date: Wednesday 2nd December 2020 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Physical Development and the EYFS Physical development is one of the three prime areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The Department of Health (2019) recommends at least three hours of physical activity across the day for children in the early years. Every movement counts. You will explore how you don’t need to plan extra activities, but just make the most of everyday opportunities. Date: Monday 18th January 2021 Time: 4.00-6.00pm Using assessment to connect with 4-year-olds This session explores the value of some assessment practices and the use of observations to identify and make sense of 4-year-olds behaviour. Aims: To discuss assessment for learning practices with 4-year-olds. To explore the impact of summative and formative assessment practices. Date: Thursday 21 January 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Leadership of Practice in the Early Years Aims: To review some of the key theories of leadership and management; To reflect critically on the role of Room Leaders in an Early Years setting; To develop new strategies of problem-solving related to the Room Leaders’ role. You will engage in a critical discussion and participate in practical tasks of identifying a leadership issue from your practice and suggesting solutions to specific scenarios via using De Bono’s ‘Six Thinking Hats’ approach. Date: Tuesday 9th February 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm The Importance of Wellbeing This session will explore how to help your team be their best self every day Aims: To explore Maslow's hierarchy of need in the work place. To discuss how this is implemented into practice within an early years setting. Date: Wednesday 14th April 2021 Time: 1.00-3.00pm Developing young children’s engagement and learning through Beach School The United Kingdom has approximately 17,819.88 km of coastline and beaches are an amazing resource for children to learn from. Utilising beaches for developing knowledge, skills and understanding across the curriculum also enables children to relax and has a positive effect on their mental wellbeing. Many practitioners are developing their Forest School approach but now there is an alternative which utilises or local beaches to provide children with experiences that encourage an appreciation, awareness and knowledge of the natural environment. It gives children the opportunity to understand how to self-assess risks and keep themselves and others safe, explore, experiment and investigate all areas of the curriculum and to understand the importance of the beach environment and the need for conservation. This session will be held on Ainsdale beach (Southport). We will discuss the principles of Beach School and associated Health and Safety requirements as well as approaches to learning and development across the areas of learning. Date: Thursday 22nd April 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Geometry Geometry (previously Shape and Space in the National Curriculum) is a difficult area for children due to the extensive language and the fact that shapes often have different names for the same shape. This session will focus on practitioner subject knowledge and the impact of this on provision across EYFS and Key Stage 1. Date: Wednesday 28th April 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Enabling Environments and the EYFS Unlocking children's full potential through viewing the learning environment as the third teacher and empowering children's play This session will draw upon international perspectives and pedagogy and explore some key questions: Why are enabling environments important in the early years? What does the EYFS say about enabling environments? How do you work collaboratively to create an enabling environment? Date: Wednesday 19th May 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Helping Boys to Succeed in Year 1 Aims : To look at some of the theories relating to children's learning. To examine the effectiveness of the transition from Reception to Year 1. To look at aspects of teaching and learning which interest boys and getting the most from these opportunities by still linking them to the National Curriculum. Date: Thursday 18th June 2021 Time: 2.00-4.00pm Phonics Outdoors This session is designed to support practitioners/teachers with contextualising phonics ‘application’. This session offers opportunities to explore how to support children with their ‘phonics’ understanding in context outdoors, as an enhancement to the discrete teaching of phonics. Application, as in children’s understanding of reading and spelling is often best approached in context and within meaningful activities. Please note: Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is intended that the sessions will be held online. However, outdoor learning sessions will be ‘in person’ where possible (subject to change).
