External preparation of weekly systems for residential and nursing homes Supplying homes with prepared, predosed medication using the WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept
WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept – week systems | WIEGAND ® 2010 The medication process in residential and nurs- ing homes will be newly secured by pharmacies An increasing number of homes expect pharmacies to deliver pre-dosed medications for their patients on a weekly basis. This results in relieving nursing staff of this task and a higher level of quality and safety during the administering of medicines is achieved. The control of the tolerance level, side effects and interactions is fostered by the state and is mandatory in certain countries. Today, cost efficiency is also a central theme alongside patient safety. Patent angemeldet The solution for a genuine challenge Together with increasing life expectancy, the number of those people requiring therapy will massively rise. Above all, the portion of those over 80 years of age will double in the next 20 years. Today, the nursing staff of residential and nursing homes are already over-burdened. As a consequence, homes would like to outsource the provision of pre-dosed medication to pharma- cies that already have the required broad spe- cialist knowledge. However, their infrastructure WIEGAND ® CollectBox for such a task is insufficient. 2
«We weren’t prepared for the additional task of providing pre-dosed medication for homes.» The WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept has advantages for the pharmacy ● Low initial investment ● A gradual adjustment to the infrastructure arising from growing requirements ● Financially and organisationally independ- ent of large medical supply centers ● The WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept does not require a GMP certification ● An easy way to win new clients and build a solid client relationship «We are working since years with medication dispensers to optimise our daily routine.» External preparation has many advantages for a home ● Low investment per patient ● Comprehensive logistical concept from storing to administering a medicine ● Substantial timesaving for qualified personnel ● The normal working processes remain the same ● Competent counterparts for questions concerning medication ● Significant improvement in medication safety 3
WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept – week systems | WIEGAND ® 2010 Pre-dosed medication – pharmacies gain new functions Advising nursing staff is an important task of the pharmacist. Are tablets to be crushed if the patient faces difficulties in swallowing? What other alternatives are available in the case of contraindications? Which patients have a new prescription? Which patients would like additional products for their well-being that are not prescription medicines? The weekly handover report that takes place during the collection of the empty MediDispensers eliminates uncertainties and improves medication safety. Collecting the empty MediDispensers With an easy scooping movement, the 7 empty MediDispensers can be loaded from the Storage Tray on to the Transport Tray of the WIEGAND ® CollectBox. The eighth MediDispenser on the Storage Tray remains in the home and thus ensures that the supplies are available during the day of ex- change. The prescriptions are stowed away in the docu- ment folder and strapped on to the top of the empty MediDispensers on the WIEGAND ® Col- lectBox Transport Tray. 4
Efficient preparation Utilising the right equipment means that the amount of time used to pre- pare medication is considerably re- duced. The FlexLine Trolley equipped with a preparation aid has been specially de- signed for the WIEGAND ® CollectBox System. The sliding lid which can be quickly brought into the correct posi- tion using the opening aid means that all 7 MediDispensers can be prepared at the same time. WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept – week systems | WIEGAND ® 2010 Gain time for professional care – homes give away tasks The lack of qualified professionals leads to stress and being snowed under with work. It is during situations of stress that the majority of mistakes occur. In view of the fact that homes have been working with prepared medication and many even use MediDispensers means that the WIEGAND ® CollectBox concept can be easily integrated with existing work processes. The time saved is substantial. However, the main argument for utilising this concept is the massive improvement in medication safety. Returning full MediDispensers The 7 MediDispensers that have been newly filled in the pharmacy are emptied from the WIEGAND ® CollectBox Transport Tray back on to the patient’s Storage Tray with a single hand movement. The medication sheet remains together with the prescription in the document folder, which can also be strapped on to the Storage Tray. Drugs on demand and additional medicines can be deposited in a MediContainer. 6
Handover report A short explanation regarding the pre- pared medications facilitates in prevent- ing uncertainties. Furthermore, it provides nursing staff with an opportunity to ask questions and obtain information regard- ing individual medicines. Medication trolley for the home The trolley provides space for the weekly medication of 12 patients. Moreover, each patient has his own MediContainer for ad- ditional medicines and drugs on demand. A small SwissModul Tray offers enough storage space for accessories. However, the large tray is required for bigger pack- ets and bottles; due to its being fully ex- tendable it can be easily handled. «Medication safety creates trust.» 7
