Overarching goal: Outreach to Community Hospitals for
Recruitment and Enrollment into Clinical Trials.
• Community hospitals, especially in suburban
and rural areas, provide care to most
Americans.
• Diversity, both in terms of patients as well as
the spectrum of medical conditions can be
enhanced with a diversity of health care
settings.
• By expanding the network of potential

Community Engagement is a Strategic Goal
of the CTSA Program
• Engage patients and communities in every phase of the
translational process
• Community engagement activities help ensure
• Communities and researchers have the capacity to participate as full partners;
• Communities are consulted for their research priorities;
• All stakeholders are respected, valued and rewarded for their time and expertise;
• More effective implementation and dissemination strategies
• Increased public support for research, and ultimately improvements in the health and
well-being of communities.

• To date:
o Rural sites have enrolled 67 of 782 participants
o Community hospitals have enrolled 192 of 782 participants
• Challenges
• Limited infrastructure to support large/complex phase 3 trials
• Limited adequate staff to conduct trial
Discussions during the Un-Meeting: • Innovative strategies to create and maintain academic- community partnerships for a better response to the next pandemic. • Beyond pandemic preparedness, what clinical activities can be employed on a routine, everyday basis which benefit both large academic medical centers and community hospitals that will enhance these partnerships?
