EXHIBITION. THE VIEW OF LOCKDOWN FROM THE BALCONIES OF THE ORDINARY PEOPLE FROM APRIL 8 TO SEPTEMBER 21, 2021
#PHEDESDEMIBALCÓN Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque and NHCC host the exhibition #PHEdesdemibalcón, which portrays the day-to-day life of Spaniards during the lockdown. During the state of alarm decreed in March 2020 in Spain, the photography festival PHotoESPAÑA launched a call for citizen participation that registered more than 60,000 images on Instagram and inaugurated the 23rd edition of this festival. This contest resulted in a traveling exhibition composed of a selection of 28 large-format images (80x70 centimeters), chosen from all those registered in the call. It shows Spanish citizens in day- to-day situations in the face of difficult circumstances. Images that could be seen from their windows and balconies and that will remain in our memory through the photographs taken.
#PHEDESDEMIBALCÓN Now, after being exhibited on the facade of the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC, Albuquerque joins this project, through this outdoor exhibition, #PHEdesdemibalcón, organized by the Embassy of Spain in Washington DC and hosted by Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque and the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The exhibit opens April 8 and runs through September 21 in the outdoor area of the NHCC and Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque facing the Paseo del Bosque (1701 4th St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102). .
#PHEDESDEMIBALCÓN The history of #PHEdesdemibalcón Knowing the role that balconies and windows were playing during the days of the lockdown, PHotoESPAÑA launched a call for participation during this period in Spain with the #PHEdesdemibalcón initiative, a call for creativity and artistic exploration of citizens announced through social networks. Anyone was invited to use a photograph to share how they saw life through their balcony during the times of the pandemic. More than 60,000 images were registered on Instagram and the 23rd edition of the Festival was inaugurated with exhibitions in 50 Spanish cities.
About PHotoESPAÑA PHotoESPAÑA was born in 1998 with the intention of developing a festival rooted in society. Supported by the Fundación Contemporánea and organised by La Fábrica, PHotoESPAÑA has put Madrid and Spain at the center of the world of photography with a yearly meeting of the highest order. From that 16th of June in 1998 to date, thousands of photographers, creators, artists, curators, museum directors, editors, heads of foundations, companies sensitive to culture, journalists, cultural managers, laboratories, photography schools, volunteers, politicians and, naturally, spectators, have set the foundations for a modern festival, open to new audiences, rigorous in its approach, ambitious in its objectives, and capable of covering as ample a spectrum of interests as might prove necessary. Since its inception, PHotoESPAÑA has had a decidedly international vision. As well as on strictly local values, PHE has focused both on grand concepts and vast artistic territories: Europe, North America, Latin America, the Far East. This vision has been upheld and developed by the curators and directors that every three years have been put in charge of the program. .
