How to engage on social media
Twitter is the leading channel for science dissemination & professional exchanges

• Post new data & scientific resources

• When you post, or reply to others’ posts: use hashtags when appropriate and/or tag your peers

• Start the post with the most interesting info. Be catchy!

• Use visuals (images/video/gif): they are more appealing to the community than just plain text posts

• If you post or comment on scientific content, add the resource/reference that supports your view, when applicable.

• If you do promotional posts (upcoming events, webinars, congresses, etc.) adding a personal note or a scientific reason
explaining why people should join, will help followers relate to you. (If you can please, use links directly from ESC website
and not links from ESC emails)

• Live-tweeting: take screenshots of key points to support your tweet content. NO video recording & posting

• MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF ALL: REMOVE ALL PATIENT IDENTIFIABLE DATA
Twitter ‘twips’ 
• You can upload up to four images per tweet

• Get to the point/key message. You have 280 characters only!

• Save some characters: you can tag up to 10 Twitter profiles into your images (not possible on a video) instead of
  tagging them in the text

• Be creative. Why not try some polls to engage the community, or Twitter threads? (click on the link to get futher info)

• You can upload one video per tweet (MP4 on desktop and MP4 or MOV on the mobile Twitter app) per tweet. Max
  length 2.20 min

• To convert videos to MP4 use Online Convert: https://webservice.online-convert.com/convert-for-twitter

• To convert videos to Gifs use EZGif: https://ezgif.com/video-to-gif

• You can use Kapwing to create engaging gifs https://www.kapwing.com/

• You can edit images on your phone/create collage etc using Photoshop Express
More ‘twips’ 
• When tweeting: use the full link, not bitly. Twitter applies 23 character to all links posted, regardless of their
length. Using bitly reports as referral traffic and not social media traffic in websites’ analytics

• LinkedIn automatically shortens links that are beyond 26 characters.

• Facebook does not shorten links

• If you wish to shorten links: you may use https://app.bitly.com/

If you can/have time, please see first if you can use https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/
    and add:
‘Social’ in the ‘Campaign Source’ field
‘Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter’ in the ‘Campaign Medium’ field
Campaign/keyword in the ‘Campaign Name’ field

This will allow for a less distorted allocation of link clicks from escardio/OUP/Wiley website links

                                              • Add the institution weblink/your own website link
                                              • You can pin a tweet at the top of your profile (it can be a post you
wish to highlight when people visit your profile).

Follow organisations of interest and your peers
     • Don’t forget about @escardio, @ESC_Journals, @ESCAdvocacy, @ESCardioNews

     Engage with the community
     • Retweet if you agree /endorse their message
     • Like, reply, comment
     • Retweet with comment (quote tweet) when you want to add your own view on the matter/retweet adding
relevant hashtags to increase the visibility of posts
     • Spark healthy debate, ask questions by mentioning your peers/experts in the field
     • Tweet your own take on recent publications, trials, interesting cases, etc.
Make the most of Twitter
Create lists

• Use Twitter to learn about new developments in your area & follow the latest discussions in your topics of interest.
Treat Twitter like your news channel

• Create lists with the accounts you want to prioritise, e.g. KOLs, colleagues, organisations and group them as you see fit.
A list is like a personalised filter among the ocean of tweets. Keep the lists in “private” mode

• When you will click on the list, you will quickly see all the tweets only from those Twitter handles
                                                                                            Create new list
How to use hashtags (#)

• Before you decide if you want to tweet and be seen in a particular hashtag, get a feel for it (good debate, no spammy posts,
etc.)

• In the ‘Search’ bar at the top of your newsfeed, look at both “Latest” and “Top” tabs and see how and when a # has been
used. The latest tab is the best so you can see what are the most recent discussions on a topic)

• You can be a passive user too and just stay up-to-date by checking hashtags to see what are the latest ‘news’ or discussions
in your area of interest. But that would be a shame  Do engage with your peers, new connections and friendships can form
on Twitter every day

• When tweeting, don’t over use hashtags. We recommend max 4/5 hashtags per post. Be natural and don’t ‘force’ it.
