Issue III-Term 1-April 2019 Principal's Panui He kākano i ruia mai Rangiatea. The seed will not be lost. April 2019 Members of the Rolleston College community will be well aware of the need to develop learners who have transferable skills and dispositions. The ability to communicate, analyse problem solve and act with creativity are all becoming increasingly important. Just as important is how these skills are utilised and there is a growing awareness of the need to develop civic minded leaders of tomorrow. Young adults who see the need to act on a community/national and even global level where they use their skills to benefit others. Schools now see the need to specifically target and develop social skills and social awareness as an important part the learning process and this is where many of these transferable attributes become most relevant. What is interesting is that there are a variety of ways that civic awareness and community empathy can be developed within a school and some of these are quite straightforward. The participation in extracurricular activities like a sports team or a drama production develops a young person's sense of belonging and accountability as well as their sense of understanding others, helping others and being responsible for their actions. It makes no difference whether this ‘team’ is the elite squad or a social team the benefits for the individual are the same. It is all about the involvement. In the same way learning another language develops an understanding and appreciation of others, this leads to developing a sense of empathy that helps us all to understand those who walk a different path to the one we are on. It is not necessarily important whether that subject is Te Reo or French the key is the ability to use a language to gain an insight into another culture and this is where the awareness of others can thrive and develop in a young mind. Being a school that has international learners is also a comparatively easy way to develop these important civic skills and dispositions. The normalisation of interacting with young people of other cultures is hugely beneficial in assisting our young adults to gain an understanding of diversity and difference. With this in mind we welcome our first international learners to Rolleston College this week. This group of learners from Spain will be with us for two weeks learning about life in New Zealand as we, in turn, learn more about Spanish life, language and culture. We live in a global village and a connected world so the development of civic minded socially aware learners is vital if our children are to be able to respond with empathy and understanding to the world they live in. As Principal I see examples of this civic awareness on a daily basis from learners writing letters to the Prime Minister to a group of learners providing a thank you afternoon tea for staff, from learners writing letters and providing morning tea for the local Police through to learners making videos to show support for the Muslim community. All of these come from the learners themselves who want to make a difference, want to have a positive impact and want to play their part in creating a better world.
