Dublin Learning City is a collaborative project between Dublin City Council and 5 Higher Educational Institutes (IADT, Marino Institute of Education, NCAD, TCD and UCD) along with other partners in further education, training and learning. The overarching aim of this initiative is to establish sustainable intergenerational learning communities in the city and to work towards becoming a Learning City, as defined by UNESCO. Dublin is committed to creating inclusive lifelong learning opportunities for individuals to participate in learning socially, culturally and economically to create a more equal society and celebrate learning for its citizens. Dublin is a UNESCO City of Literature and it has lifelong learning in its blood. Dublin Learning City will be an amplification of existing community outreach initiatives by using our citywide network, and retaining an inclusive and inter-generational focus as a core operational tenet. In doing so, Dublin’s citizens will benefit from enhanced 6
individual empowerment, employability, social inclusion, economic development, cultural prosperity, and sustainable development. Lifelong learning is key in creating Dublin as a sustainable city and society. Dublin has enormous potential to stimulate and support learning among its citizens in ways that can help tackle existing issues, strengthen social cohesion and solidarity, and transform the prospects of communities for the better. Dublin Learning City: Enabling, Fostering, Exploring and Celebrating Everyday Conversations about Learning and Opportunities for Dublin’s Citizens. 7
Directors’ Notes Why It’s Important Denise McMorrow, Co-Chair Dublin Learning City The vision for the Dublin Learning City is for it to become a global leader in Learning. Dublin Learning City will strengthen existing communities and outreach initiatives by collaborating with Dublin City Council, Communities, Universities, Colleges, Schools and Stakeholders. Dublin has enormous potential to stimulate and support learning for its citizens in ways that can help tackle existing issues, strengthen social cohesion and solidarity, and transform the prospects of communities for the better. This collaborative project builds confidence, encourages, and revitalizes learning in families and communities. Our aim is to ensure that education and learning are accessible for all inhabitants in formal and informal settings. Dublin Learning City Enables Everyday Conversations about Learning and Opportunities and it is a great honour to co-chair the first Learning Festival for Dublin. Trevor Purtill, Co-Chair Dublin Learning City Marino Institute of Education is delighted to be a partner in the inaugural Dublin Learning Festival. We understand that a true learner’s journey never ends and that lifelong learning is important not just for an individual’s career aspirations, but also for their wellbeing, their ability to engage with their own communities, and, in turn, for them to become the teacher, the trainer, the coach, or the mentor for others. Lifelong learning is a continuing cycle where we all can give and receive in terms of knowledge, skills and experience. Having a festival of learning in our city is an exciting and welcome development. We hope you participate as much as you can and perhaps for next year’s festival you might have a learning event for others to join. Directors’ Notes 8
Anne-Marie Kelly, Divisional Librarian Learning Rep., Dublin City Council Dublin City Council’s vision for Dublin citizens is ‘to have a place in which to be, to live, to work, to do business and to enjoy. A city that has everything by being friendly, progressive, different and brilliant.’ (Dublin City Council Corporate Plan 2015 – 2019) We are therefore excited to support the Dublin Learning City Festival with our partner colleges. We recognise that learning is happening daily on a formal level in schools and colleges but also in an informal and relaxed way in many of our council venues such as libraries, art galleries, sports centres and parks. This festival showcases a variety of free learning possibilities. Dublin City Council invites you to come along and try out something new whether it’s holding a paintbrush in your hand, learning how to send an email or trying out a yoga pose. The Dublin Learning City Festival is free and fun. All you have to do is SHOW UP! Dr Anna M Kelly Chair, Leinster Pillar 1 Cluster PATH is a Higher Education Authority initiative designed to increase access to higher education to those that are currently underrepresented in our colleges, institutes of higher education and our universities. Leinster Pillar 1 is a consortium of five higher education institutions being led by UCD, and involving Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design (IADT), Marino Institute of Education (MIE), National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD). A range of work is developed by this consortium, including Dublin Learning City, Creative Arts Summer School, Community Mentoring, Open Learning, and the 1916 Bursary Fund. As Chair of this group, I would like to invite you to take part in and enjoy all the events being offered this week and if something interests you and you would like to learn more, please contact us to see how we can help. Dr Bairbre Fleming UCD, Chair, Open Learning Sub Group Open Learning is an exciting new way to study on a part-time basis. IADT, NCAD and UCD have come together to offer a range of subjects, studying at your own pace taking one module at a time or as many as you like in a semester. You can also decide if you would like to attend classes because you are interested in a subject or because you would like to take the exam at the end. The choice is yours! Scholarships are available, and no prior formal educational experience is necessary to register. Just find a subject that interests you and sign up. UCD, together with our partners in Cross-Institutional Open Learning is delighted to support the Dublin Learning City project. www.dublinlearningcity.ie 9
Kathleen O’Toole-Brennan TCD, Chair, Community Mentoring Sub Group Trinity College is proud to support the Dublin Learning City project, which includes as part of it a new inter-institutional approach to the successful community mentoring programme. The community mentoring programme helps inspire a new generation of students across Dublin by sending undergraduate mentors back to their communities. Mentors then share their own stories about their education journey, including the choices and opportunities available at third level. Our mentors genuinely want to give back, and this programme brings us together as part of a larger community. We are working towards making sure that young adults and mature students across Dublin are well informed and inspired about their future college choices. It’s also a win-win for our mentors, who develop essential abilities like public speaking, networking, presentation and reflection skills that are vital for building a successful career. Finola McTernan, NCAD, Chair, CASS Sub Group NCAD is delighted to be involved with the Dublin Learning City project, which includes as part of it the Creative Arts Summer School. The second CASS will take place in Dublin from 24 –28 June 2019. If you are interested in exploring your creative potential and finding out about the academic and financial supports available, then this might be the course for you! All ages from 16+, free with transport and lunch provided. Open to those who meet access criteria: FET/PLC students, people with disabilities, lone parents, students who attend DEIS band schools, mature students and members of the Irish Traveller community. You will spend one day in NCAD, Marino Institute of Education, UCD, IADT and TCD. For information contact: cass@ncad.ie. Directors’ Notes 10
Irish Network of Learning Cities Dublin is the newest member of the Irish Learning City Network, which endeavours to create a borderless island of learning, ensuring opportunities for accessible, life - long learning throughout Ireland. On 24th January 2019, Dublin Learning City hosted the second meeting of the Irish Learning City Network. The meeting welcomed Learning City representatives from Cork, Limerick, Derry and Belfast to discuss their work in promoting learning throughout the island of Ireland. Ireland Learning Cities’ partners will amplify existing community education initiatives by using their citywide network and retaining an inclusive and inter- generational focus as a core operational tenet.
