Full Circle, 2016 The ‘obsession with men’s sport’ was also seen as a problem. “Because of Wales’ sporting success, there is a massive emphasis on male success in sports. “This mentality is flushed into us from an early age. Even in secondary school, only boys were ‘allowed’ to play certain sports, including rugby” (Giant, 2016)

Thought For The Week - Session 5 “Success” Walt Disney. - He was fired by a newspaper editor because he said he lacked imagination and had no good ideas. After that, he started a number of businesses that didn't last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. However, he kept plugging along and eventually found a recipe for success that worked. Soichiro Honda. - He began with a series of failures like many others. In 1922, he was turned down by Toyota for a job position as an engineer. He was left jobless for quite some time. In this time, he started making scooters from his home and, after 6 years, finally started his own business. Consequently, Honda has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer since 1959! Stephen Spielburg. - While today his name is synonymous with big budget films he was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Theatre, Film and Television three times! He eventually attended school at another location, only to drop out to become a director before finishing. Thirty-five years after starting his degree, He returned to school in 2002 to finally complete his work and earn his BA degree. Lionel Messi - He has been named the finest football player in the world today, but his road to this title was not so easy. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency. This meant that he did not grow tall enough to play football professionally and no club was willing to pay the $900 a month for his treatment. Despite all of these obstacles, he kept trying! Finally, one of the best clubs in the world, Barcelona FC, saw his talent, gave him a trial and offered to pay for his medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain. Reflection Time Read the success stories above and take a moment to think about what you need to do to succeed.
Challenges • Curriculum Academic demands of other subjects Vulnerable students often excluded or in isolation Time – a missed lesson, half term etc. can affect learning progression and relationships • Isolation of SRE staff Other members of staff can unwittingly undermine the messages promoted in PSE and SRE – values and experiences brought into the classroom; PSE and SRE viewed as opinion
• Resources Official resources, approved speakers can perpetuate victim blaming and rape culture Content doesn’t match young people’s contexts • Social Media/Fake News/Social experiments Challenge of supporting young people to appraise/evaluate online experts • Wider School Culture Emphasis on male sport, predominance of PE staff in pastoral roles, input from football, rugby organisations and personnel reinforces polarised messages relating to gender; ‘locker room banter’, uniform school rules, victim blaming reinforced in behavioural interventions, lack of pastoral training
