District 64 Worlds of Wonder 2018 Summer School Program Washington School For Students Who Have Completed Grades K-3 Welcome! Welcome to Worlds of Wonder, the District 64 summer program. Our staff has prepared a program filled with learning, enrichment, and fun! If you have questions regarding the program, do not hesitate to stop by the office, contact us by phone, or send an email. The summer school office phone number at Washington is 847-653-3768. Office hours are 8:00 a.m.–12:00 noon. The summer school principal can be reached at aclishem@d64.org. Dropping Off and Picking up Students at Washington School. Washington Elementary School is located at 1500 W. Stewart in Park Ridge. Most parents will be driving their child to school. Please drive carefully. We encourage you to arrive early. Staff parking lots are for staff only or for those who require handicap parking. Please find a permissible parking spot on the neighborhood roads. Please be aware of the no parking zones at the very front of the school on Stewart and along the east side of the school along Western. Signs will be outside each day that will serve as a visual of nce you park your car, walk your child to the school building. Finally, please remember that students must be dropped off where cars should park. O on time and picked up at dismissal. No supervision is available for students who arrive before 8:20 a.m. or who remain unattended after 11:40 a.m. Walking and Biking to School Neighborhood crossing guards will be stationed at the following intersections: Belle Plaine & Greenwood, Western & Touhy, Western & Crescent, lease do not cross the street to and from school without the assistance of a crossing guard. Never go Western & Stewart, and Western & Talcott. P across the middle of the street and especially where parked cars obstruct the view of moving vehicles. Cross only at intersections. Students riding a bicycle to and from school must wear a bicycle helmet. Bikes should be locked. The bike rack is located on Crescent Avenue. Entry/Exit Doors and Building Security There are two entry and exit doors designated by class (see list below). Between 8:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., teachers will wait outside to line up students. Teachers will hold signs indicating the name of their class and will stand in one of two places: outside Door #1 (the main entrance to the school) or outside Door #15 (the middle door facing the lawn along Western Ave.). Because many students stay for a second class, it will be important for you to note from which door that second class will dismiss students. The first class starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. Attendance is taken as soon as students are settled in their classrooms. Please try your best to be on time. If classes have already entered the building when your child arrives, please bring your child into school through the main office (Door #1 facing Stewart). At 10:00 a.m., we have a passing period. Staff will escort students who stay for a second class to their second teacher. Students who
dismiss at 10:10 a.m. will be escorted to their exit door. A staff person will wait with them until they are picked up. The program ends at 11:40 a.m. Because there is no after school supervision of students, all students need to be picked up promptly. Students Going to Park District Camps Some students may also participate in the Park District’s early morning “before care” program or afternoon day camps. Parents interested in Park District transportation to or from Washington School will need to make those arrangements with the Park District. To avoid unnecessary phone calls and transportation delays, please notify the Washington School office at (847) 653-3768 in advance if your child is not using Park District transportation on a particular day. Each classroom assistant will escort Park District campers to the school auditorium where, under summer school supervision, they will meet up with their camp counselors. We will also take daily attendance at that point to account for all the children going to camp. Student Absence, and Tardiness We expect students to be in attendance. Therefore, absences must be called in to the summer school office before the start of class at 847-653-3768. Calls made before 8:00 a.m. will be received by voice mail. Because all building doors are kept locked, students arriving after 8:30 a.m. must be accompanied by a parent to the main school entrance facing Stewart. Students then report to the office and are given a class entry slip before going to class. Student Health, Allergies, Medications and Illness Prevention. Your willingness to disclose details about your child’s allergies, or absence due to illness, will help us promote the health and wellness of all. Staff members will promote proper hand hygiene in all classes and especially in classes where students handle and consume food. Medications for your child should be clearly labeled. Medications should be brought to the summer school office on Tuesday, June 5, the first day of school, and picked up on Friday, July 13, the last day of school. There are no snack times during the summer school day. Make sure the children eat breakfast before they come to school. Students are encouraged to bring bottled water on very hot days. MESSAGE FROM THE SUMMER SCHOOL NURSE In keeping with our District Food Guidelines, and in the interest of promoting healthy habits and ensuring the safety of those with life-threatening food allergies, please note the following: Please refrain from bringing in birthday or other “special day” treats. Consider alternate ways of acknowledging your child’s special day. Food used during cooking classes or class projects involving food will not knowingly contain nut/peanut products. Labels will be checked to ensure that such foods do not contain traces of peanut/nut products or are produced on machinery that has processed nuts. In addition, all food preparation for school consumption will follow District 64 Guidelines for Food Preparation/Delivery in School. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
