DIPA in a nutshell • Composed of 15.0 units • 6.0 units count towards degree and certificate • 9.0 units applied to certificate only • 2018-2019 Faculty of Arts and Science tuition fees for 9.0 units = $2027

What you will do • KNPE 336 • KNPE 436 • 84 hrs in the Revved Up • 84 hrs in the Revved Up gym + weekly seminar gym + weekly seminar • Work 1-on-1 with • Apply knowledge to Revved Up Participants develop new exercise programs for participants • Principles of adapted exercise program design • Develop understanding of the inner workings of community-based programs
What you will gain “My group presentation was on Parkinson’s Disease. I learned a great Knowledge deal about the disease itself, and how exercise can alleviate detrimental conditions associated with Parkinson’s. I found this topic particularly relevant to me as my grandfather has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I now know why he has hunched posture, tremors in his hands and a shuffled gait.” Communication “Since many Revved Up participants have difficulties with communication, including understanding direction and speaking, I Skills have fostered skills to both understand what my participant is asking for, and communicate direction to them in a clear, simple way.”
What you will gain “Throughout my time in KNPE 336 and 436, I have learned a plethora Leadership Skills of transferable skills, such as patience, time management and leadership, both when working in the gym and through the coursework.” “Building on my knowledge from the 336 online modules, and the 436 tutorials and readings, I learned how to assess exercise intensity and Transferable Skills volume, and make appropriate adjustments to a program. While in 336 this knowledge was novel, my supervisory role in 436 allowed me to expand upon this knowledge with greater autonomy, which advanced my decision-‐making and critical thinking skills. Given my personal interest in fitness, this will be advantageous to my daily life and future professional endeavors.”

Eligibility • Queen’s on-campus students, enrolled in any undergrad program, in level 2 or above • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 • Applications are collected and then ranked by cumulative GPA

FAQs
FAQ Can I complete the Certificate and graduate on time? • Yes, it’s possible. • If you start after 2nd or 3rd year you will need to plan your courses carefully. • Once enrolled you will meet with the Certificate Coordinator to plan your courses.
FAQ What happens if I don’t finish both the Certificate and my degree at the end of 4 years? • Graduate and finish Certificate afterwards, OR • Defer graduation to complete required courses
FAQ Can I still take the Exercise, Disability, and Aging mini- stream? • No, only students who took KNPE 336 in the 2018-2019 academic year have the option to finish the mini-stream.
FAQ Can I take the Certificate if I’m in a mini-stream? • Yes, you can take both a mini-stream (Athletic Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Research, Movement and Health) and the Certificate.
FAQ Can I apply to the Certificate after 2nd or 3rd year if I’m unsuccessful when applying at the end of 1st year? • Absolutely! • Applying earlier does allow for easier planning in regards to when to take the extra courses because registration priority.
FAQ What can I do if I’m unsuccessful in year 1 to improve my chances year 2/3? • As Certificate enrollment is based on Cumulative GPA, you can work to increase your Cumulative GPA.
FAQ Can I take any of these courses if I’m not in the Certificate? • KNPE 336 and KNPE 436 can ONLY be taken by Certificate students • KNPE 255 is Level 2 KIN/PHED only • HLTH 200 is Level 2 HLTH only • HLTH 332 Level 3 in KIN/HLTH/PHED • KNPE 335 Level 3 in KIN/HLTH/PHED, corequisite with HLTH 332 (must take HLTH 332 at same time or prior to taking KNPE 335) • HLTH 315 Level 3 in KIN/HLTH/PHED, PSYC 100 and (HLTH 205 or KNPE 265) • HLTH 402/403/404…BISC program - can be taken by students in any program
