Development Perspectives Latest News September 18th, 2014 Insight 2014 Phase 3. Insight 2014 is well under way with participants about to embark on the third and final phase of their journey. The three weekends of Phase 3 will take place between September and November with a series of workshops and talks from speakers such as Fr. Peter McVerry and Tom Meagher of the White Ribbon Campaign. November will see us welcome our Tanzanian friends to experience Ireland, take part in Phase 3 and to help prepare the exhibition designed to utilize the combined talents of all the participants. The final exhibition will take place in the Drogheda Arts Centre on the 12th of November. ______________________________________________________________________________ Insight 2014 - Experiences of Parakuyo from Naomi Andreucetti. “What can I say about my Insight 2014 trip to Parakuyo, Tanzania? It was one of the best trips of my life but also one of the most challenging experiences I've ever had, both physically and mentally! The Insight Programme with DP is split into three phases. During Phase One you are given different workshops and background info on the area/culture you'll travel to and you bond with the other participants. Phase Two has been my favourite so far. We travelled to Tanzania and took part in amazing workshops facilitated by 1
our amazing leaders and coordinators. You get pushed to your limits (in a good way), challenge your boundaries and widen your horizons. While away it was nice to sit back and enjoy the moment instead of being a 'snap happy selfie taker'. Phase Three is yet to come and I'm excited to exchange stories, photos, etc. with the rest of the group." ______________________________________________________________________________ Insight Network Meeting The first Insight Network meeting took place on Saturday 30th August in Barlow House. This was a wonderful opportunity for past participants of the programme to re-connect with each other and with the work of DP. In the morning, those who attended were brought up to date with current projects and fundraisers. There was also a discussion about the new Strategic Plan 2015-17, gathering together the feedback and ideas of everyone present. In the afternoon, Caoimhe Butterly gave a workshop on Social Justice in the Middle East and Turkey. Caoimhe’s extensive experience in movements for social justice all over the world made for a fascinating discussion that was truly inspiring. ______________________________________________________________________________ Explorers’ Journey for Systemic Change: tackling root causes. ·How can activism/civil society contribute to a shift in current worldviews and values beyond consumerism and self-interest? ·How can we get involved in the exciting innovation process of creating the new system / economy? ·How can we create cross-sectorial movements that build real momentum for system change? ·How can we change our own organisations to become fit for system change? SEE THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY. - BLOG "Land of a hundred thousand welcomes?" "Direct provision (DP), the Irish system of accommodation for asylum seekers, was established in 1999 as a short-term solution. It was intended to provide accommodation for up to 6 months in former hotels, hostels and other units while asylum cases were processed and applicants were either granted refugee status or deported. Yet more than 600 people have spent in excess of 7 years in direct provision, through no fault of their own. And while holding people in legal limbo for over 7 years is obviously unacceptable, it is the conditions in these accommodation centres that urgently need to be addressed."
