Department for Infrastructure and Transport 2021 Roundtable for Oil and Gas in South Australia Thursday, 9 December 2021 Jon Whelan, Executive Director, Transport Project Delivery #18042580
The Strzelecki Track Project • The Strzelecki Track is a 472 kilometre rural road (predominantly unsealed) that links the towns of Lyndhurst to Innamincka in the north east of South Australia. • It is a vital supply link for the nationally significant oil and gas extraction facilities located near Moomba, in the Cooper and Eromanga Basins, and is an essential transport corridor for outback communities, tourism and pastoralists. • The nature of the unsealed road makes it inaccessible during wet weather and flood events, negatively impacting on the efficient and safe operations of road users. • The project will include pavement rehabilitation and sealing of the existing road alignment to stop the pavement deteriorating from traffic loading, natural erosion and minimising damage during inclement weather events.
Funding • In June 2020, the South Australian Government allocated $10m from the Economic Development Fund to seal the first 50 kilometres of the 472 kilometre Strzelecki Track, beginning immediately north of Lyndhurst and to commence early works program (including development of business case to seal remainder of the Track). • In October 2020, the Federal and South Australian governments announced funding of $125m towards upgrading the Strzelecki Track. • In June 2021, the Federal and South Australian governments announced additional funding of $80m, bringing the total funding to complete the project to $215m with works over 5 years.

Following a significant flood event in March 2021, the section of road between Moomba and Dillions Highway (known as Della Road) was surveyed. Design works are underway to undertake works. The Bureau of Meteorology has now declared a “La Nina” weather event for the second year in Australia. In the past weeks two separate weather events have occurred that have resulted in “Closure and/or Restrictions” for traffic on the Strzelecki Track.
Nappa Merrie Pit, 13km east of Innamincka, indicative of the pits along the Strzelecki Track. A total of 120,000 tonnes raised and crushed from this pit, to be utilised for upgrades to 3 junctions and the Strzelecki Creek Crossing. Raising and crushing pavement material for use in construction from a suitable source located along the track is necessary, as the closest quarry is over 1,000km round trip.
Knob Bore and Turkey Nest Dam are representative of the numerous bores along the length of the Strzelecki Track. Water is pumped from the storage point for use in the construction works, as there is no mains water available.
