A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO Hello and welcome to our annual Danni’s Diary newsletter. We hope you enjoy this snapshot into life at your local children’s hospice, and seeing some of the wonderful things your donations have paid for. It’s fair to say this year has been a rollercoaster! Starting the year in lockdown was tough for everyone, but I’m proud to say that we’ve managed be here for our children, young people and their families no matter what – continuing respite at the hospice and supporting families in many other ways. COVID has changed the world, and here at Derian it’s helped us to innovate. We’ve come up with new ways of fundraising and have organised our services to make sure they are as accessible as possible to everyone. One popular change has been to open up the hospice for more day care. After months of shielding, a trip to the cinema, sensory room, pool or playground at Derian House for the day was a lifeline for many families. This year, we have carried out our biggest-ever listening exercise, asking our families what they needed most, in order to set our strategy for the future. See page 6 for what they told us. We’ve also doubled our Derian on Holiday provision, building two amazing new holiday lodges in the Lakes, due to open in Autumn 2021. Check them out on page 11. To pay for all these new services we’ve had to work hard. We’ve not only opened two new charity shops in Preston and Blackburn (see page 16) but we’ve also launched a competition the likes of which we’ve never seen before! Read all about the Great Big House Giveaway on page 23. As we continue to navigate life after lockdown, whatever is thrown at us, one thing remains. We are committed to being the leading provider of children’s palliative and end-of-life care in the UK. With your help, we will always strive to make sure the life of every child matters. Little Zed’s journey home Baby Muhammad-Zareb – or “Little Zed” as his parents call him - was born during the February 2021 lockdown with a rare disorder that meant part of his brain was missing. Parents Zahid and Rehana, from Blackburn, had prepared themselves for an uncertain future having been warned about their baby boy’s condition at the 20-week scan. But at just 48 hours old, Little Zed stopped breathing and was rushed into intensive care, leaving them devastated. Doctors said baby Zed was unlikely to ever leave hospital or breathe on his own. COVID restrictions on visiting meant he had never been allowed to meet big sister Hina, aged two. But against the odds, Little Zed kept fighting and eventually began to breathe independently. After a successful operation on his stomach to improve feeding, the family were told they could take their precious boy home. Fearful about the huge responsibility of caring for a seriously ill baby whilst also looking after their toddler daughter, Zahid and Rehana turned to Derian House Children’s Hospice for support. For the first time since our baby was born we’ve had the opportunity to live like a family. The team is amazing, they’ve taken so much pressure off us and I won’t forget this experience for the rest of my life. Dad (Zah id) and si ster (Hin a) ehana) th mum (R Cuddles wi 4
The family came to the hospice and were able to learn how to care for their baby whilst having a safety net of support when needed. “It took so much pressure off us and allowed us to get into a routine of what time his feeds and meds were. We could relax because we weren’t thrown in the deep end,” said dad Zahid. Now home and settling into family life, the family continue to be supported by Derian staff and have been back for a respite visit to rest and make memories together. They have enjoyed happy times playing on the Smile Park playground and a movie night at the hospice’s on-site cinema. Touched by the care they received, Zahid has even volunteered to become an ambassador for the charity, and is planning to help spread awareness in hard-to-reach communities using his multi-linguistic skills. And Little Zed was the star of the show at the official opening of the new Derian House new charity shop in Blackburn where dad Zed cut the ribbon to declare the shop open to the public. Although the future will have its challenges, one thing for certain is that Little Zed and his family will make the most of every moment they have together. “He is our first and only son, our job as his parents is to make sure that he knows he is loved for every second of his life.” You can read more stories about how we help families and children like Little Zed’s on our website www.derianhouse.co.uk. 5

Blooming marvellous turn-out at Open Gardens event Crowds flocked to visit when we opened our beautiful gardens to the public for the very first time, at two special events this year. The National Garden Scheme saw us allowing guests to take a tour of the grounds at the hospice, as well as enjoying tea and home-made cake, at open days in May and August. Visitors also got chance to meet Shuna our Pets as Therapy dog, buy cuttings of plants potted by our children and young people, and find out more about volunteering. For the children, a scavenger hunt proved popular, as well as bubble fun from our favourite bubble artist, Emma from eBublio. At our Open Garden events, we were lucky to have one of our green fingered supporters, Margaret Bond, donate plants for us to sell. Thank you Margaret! 2 Silver award at Chorley Flower Show Our rainbow-inspired display impressed judges at Chorley Flower Show this summer – bagging us a silver medal! The display, which paid tribute to the efforts of key workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, was awarded the prestigious honour in the Community Garden category at the show which took place at Astley Park in August. With our entry being just a few points off a gold medal, Gardener Gareth and his trusty volunteers are already planning next year’s theme! 9

Thanks to the generous donations of our supporters, Derian House is able to offer our families a week’s stay in our lodges completely free of charge. Pic: Isaac on holiday with dad Greetings from our new lodges We all know that holidays are an important part of creating happy memories that last. Due to the high demand for stays at our two Ribby Hall lodges, this year we built two more holiday lodges at South Lakeland Leisure Village, near Carnforth. Let’s get Reddy Thank You to rumble A teenage music sensation from Blackburn has been on a whirlwind tour of the UK to raise money for the hospice which cared for his brother. Jacob Reddy, 16, from Blackburn, toured every city in the UK busking to raise more than £8,000 for Derian House. Over 22 days Jacob travelled up and down the country, starting at the charity’s Preston charity shop. And he certainly caused a storm! Highlights include a surprise visit from his favourite YouTuber JaackMaate in Norwich and a shout-out at the gig of his favourite musician Frank Turner from the O2 Apollo. Jacob also received his GCSE results whilst on tour, and got the brilliant news that he had gained a place at the prestigious music college BIMM Institute Manchester. Jacob’s brother Joseph was cared for by Derian House, and so the charity has a place in his heart. Although Jacob never met his older brother, who died in 2003 just before his third birthday, he decided to mark what would have been his big brother’s 21st birthday with a special fundraising event. Jacob said: “I took on this crazy nationwide busking challenge to celebrate Joseph’s life and to say a massive thanks to Derian. “My main aim was to raise lots of money for the charity as they have struggled financially due to the pandemic but still continue to care for children like my brother.” Check out Jacob’s incredible journey by searching #BUSKINGFORDERIAN 20 on Instagram.
