Chairman’s Remarks:
Although the last year has been a successful one for SSCA on the field, and I will return to that
later, there have been problems elsewhere. Mike Barry, our hard-working Treasurer has had
his health problems, but is now improving, and my own function as your Chairman has been
compromised by my wife’s poor health. It is for this reason that I open this piece with my own
heartfelt thanks to Simon Beck, Jim Hammond and Richy Riseboro for standing in for me at
various Finals Days, and also to our President, Edward Handley MBE, for his continued support
throughout the year.
Now for the good news! It has been an outstanding year for Surrey schools, and Surrey youth
cricket, both on an off the field. Cranleigh School won the ESCA/ECB National U14/U15 Schools
Championship, becoming the first Surrey school to win the competition, previously the Lord’s
Taverners’ Trophy for School. Whitgift School won the ESCA/ECB National U15 T20. Both wins
were achieved against Sedbergh School (Cumbria). The Surrey CCC U15 side won the ECB Royal
London U15 County Cup with comprehensive wins over Yorkshire and Middlesex. With
Guildford CC also winning the ECB NatWest U15 National Club Championship, Surrey teams
have, in 2014, won every ECB National U15 Boys’ competition – a unique feat! The Surrey CCC
U17 side also shared the ECB Royal London U17 County Championship (2-day) with Lancashire
after the final was rained off. (Further details of Surrey CCC CAG activities can be found at the
back of this booklet)

CRANLEIGH SCHOOL U15 SQUAD 2014 -- Winners of ESCA/ECB National U14/U15 Schools Championship

Parkside School, winners of the Geoff Richards Trophy, went on to win the Regional Phase of
the ESCA Under 11 Hardball Cricket Competition. On the National Finals Day at Oakham School,
Parkside qualified for the Final by losing fewer wickets than Exeter School in their final group
match. They narrowly lost the Final to Twyford School by 6 runs.
Off the field, St Peter’s Primary School (Croydon) were awarded the prestigious CMJ Award for
Schools which includes £2000 to be spent on coaching and equipment. Broadwater School
(Godalming) has been short-listed for a national Chance to Shine Award. It is good to see the
work of schools in Surrey, supported by SSCA and the Surrey Cricket Board, is being recognised.
The Association acknowledges the support of Paul Taylor, Kim Price and the SCB Development
Team, especially in working together to create the Schools Affiliation Package which is available
to all schools affiliated to SSCA. The 4 Outer London Boroughs affiliated all their schools en
bloc, giving a total of 319 affiliated schools.
SCB also supports the annual Hobbs Trophy match, which was played in a different format this
year. Due to misunderstandings, 3 teams were selected – Surrey London Boroughs, Rest of
Surrey and a London Schools’ team. On the day, the 2 Surrey based sides played a T20 format
in the morning with Surrey London Boroughs winning by 5 wkts despite a half-century from
Bilal Mohammed for Rest of Surrey. In the afternoon, the winning Surrey London Boroughs
side took on London Schools’ and batted first. Having set a below par score of 120, London
Boroughs bowled tightly to restrict London Schools’ to 106. Thanks to Paul Taylor for his co-
operation and for presenting trophies on the day

SOUTH LONDON BOROUGHS -- Winners of the Hobbs Trophy 2014

In the professional game, Jason Roy made his England debut, and Natalie Sciver became a
regular in the England Women’s teams. County caps were awarded to Roy, Zafar Ansari and
Rory Burns, and Matt Dunn had an excellent season with the ball. It is very rewarding to see
home-grown talent succeeding. Dominic Sibley played U19 Tests v South Africa, and Ollie
Batchelor was in the EDP Squad for the U17 series v Pakistan. Angus Dahl, Will Jacks, Rafeh
Jafri and Alex Shoff were all selected in the London & East U15 side that won the Bunbury
Festival. Lastly, Sam Curran has just been announced in the U17 England Development Squad
for 2014-15. Congratulations to all. The future of Surrey cricket looks very promising.
On a local level, it was a good year for competitions with increased entries and very few
problems. Details of inter-school competitions are in the next section of this report. The
biggest concern is with the Girls’ competition. Although there were more entries this year, very
few matches were actually played and the future of this competition needs to be reviewed. It
would help to have some input from those directly involved in girls’ cricket in schools.
The Association also acknowledges the support given by Whitgift School over many years in so
many ways, including hosting finals and meetings. In particular, especial thanks must go to Val
Baxter at Whitgift, for her continued support over this past year.

                                                                     Phil Everest (Chairman)
School Competitions Report
Competition entries for 2014 were higher than for 2013, especially for the U15 T20 and the U11
competitions. Entries were also made by a number of new schools, notably Epsom College, St
James’ Senior Boys’School (Ashford), & Bolingbroke Academy. In addition, there were a
number of returning schools (e.g. Lingfield Notre Dame, Parkside, & Thamesmead) and many
schools expanded their entries. The fine weather ensured that the majority of competitions
was completed on time, the only exceptions being the U15 NatWest County Cup, which
Whitgift & Trinity agreed to share, and the U13 Plate Final which will be played at the start of
next summer.
Whitgift continued their domination of the U15 National T20, defeating Trinity in the County
Final, and also won the Anderson Cup for the first time for many years. The Whitgift U15 side
progressed through the Regional Phase of the T20, U14 Sam Hall scoring a superb 126 against
Norwich School in the Regional semi-final, to the National Finals at Arundel. Having beaten
Portsmouth GS by 48 runs in the semi (Sam Hall 62), Whitgift then took on the powerful
Sedbergh side from Cumbria. Batting first, Whitgift managed a par score of 123-7, Sam Hall
again top scoring with 33. Sedbergh made a good start but could not maintain the required
rate against accurate Whitgift bowling and were eventually dismissed for 96. With 3 of this
National winning side still U14 we wish the Whitgift U14’s success as they carry the Surrey
banner into the ECB/ESCA National U15 Schools Championship for 2015.

The U13 Watcyn Evans Trophy attracted the biggest entry, but the 4 semi-finalists, Reigate GS,
Shrewsbury House, Trinity and Whitgift managed to arrive at Finals Day on schedule. Whitgift
had an untroubled passage through their semi v Reigate, but the other semi was a very tense
affair. Having been set 116 by Trinity, the Shrewsbury House batsmen found the boundary
regularly and were well on target with 3 overs remaining. However, tight bowling built
pressure and created run-outs, leaving Trinity the winners by 3 runs. Unfortunately, Trinity
were unable to repeat the feat in the Final.
New entrants Feltonfleet reached the semi-finals of the Jubilee Cup at the first attempt, to join
KCJS Wimbledon, RGS Guildford and Trinity (conquerors of Whitgift) in the semi-finals. In the
semis, Trinity beat Feltonfleet while KCJS were too strong for RGS. The Final was only decided
on the penultimate ball when an edged balled found its way to the boundary to give Trinity
victory by 2 wkts. The 3rd/4th place play-off was won by Feltonfleet. We wish Trinity all success
in their first venture in to the David English Bunbury National U13 Cup in 2015.
The increased entry for the Geoff Richards Trophy necessitated a change of format. 6 groups
provided 6 winners, plus 2 best runners-up to into a Q-Final draw. Two State schools, Pyrford
CE Juniors and West Byfleet Juniors reached this Q-Final draw, Pyrford losing narrowly to
Cranmore. On Finals Day, Parkside, back in the competition after a 3-year break, won all 3 of
their matches to take the Trophy and progress to the Regional Phase. Parkside also had a good
run in the U11 Verney Cup, reaching the Final before losing a tight match to Shrewsbury House
by 3 runs.

The Vase and Plate competitions for State schools all went well, including the new U14 Plate.
The U13 Plate Final between Wallington CGS and Weydon School will be played in 2015.
The U14 Girls’ competition was disappointing in that only one of the 3 groups functioned.
Weydon School from Farnham beat Howard of Effingham in the Final. It will be necessary to
consider the future of this competition.
Once again, a massive vote of thanks should go to Richard Jones & Mike Catt at Horsley & Send
CC who staged FOUR SSCA Finals Days this year.
Thanks also to Jim Hammond, Richy Riseboro, Duncan White, Simon Beck and Charles South
without whom this highly successful competition programme would not be possible.

Surrey CAG Review:

U17 Squad: P 11 W 8 L 2 T 0 C/A 1
Surrey made a poor start to the season by losing the opening matches of both ECB competitions to
Essex. Surrey were not to lose another match in either competition. In the 1-day Cup, a century and 4
wkts from Sam Curran gave Surrey a 30 run win over Sussex. An opening partnership of 181 between
Ollie Batchelor (82) and Ryan Patel (86) laid the foundation for a narrow 19 run victory over Middx,
before an outstanding bowling session by the Surrey seamers saw Kent blown away for 86. However,
the loss to Essex cost Surrey first place in the Group.
In the 2-day Championship, it was the seam bowlers who had earlier dismissed Sussex for 102 to set up
the first Surrey win. Against Middx it was Curran (4 wkts) and the spinners who did the damage with the
ball before Ollie Pope (88*) led Surrey to victory. In the last Group match, Curran again led the way with
an innings of 145 to set up another win and take Surrey to the top of the Group.
This gave Surrey a semi-final match away to Wales. Having been asked to bat, Surrey made good
progress through Patel (98), Oli Batchelor (46), Bradley Erasmus (46) and Curran (43) and reached 299-4
before losing 6 wkts for 39 runs. Wales made steady progress, passing 200 for the loss of 4 wkts, before
spinners Tom Homes (4-65) and Chris Jones (2-67) eventually took Surrey to the Final by an 8-run
margin.
Regrettably, the rain restricted the Final to 34 overs and Surrey shared the trophy with Lancashire.

U15 Squad: P 15 W 10 L 2 T 0 C/A 3
The U15 Squad won the Royal London Cup to win the ECB National Competition for the 4th time in 5
years, but the season did not start well. Surrey slumped to 29–5 in the opening friendly match v Hants
before Jake Hennessey (85) and Dom Johnsen (47) took the score to a respectable 224-9. The bowlers
maintained the momentum, as Hants were dismissed for 123.
This pattern of early batting collapses was repeated in the next 2 friendly matches and the early Cup
matches. The first 2 Cup matches were rained off, but when the title defence began v Kent, Surrey,
chasing a meagre 166, again lost early wickets before Alex Shoff (59*) steered them to victory. The next
match, v Essex, brought the only Cup defeat of the season as the Surrey batting once again failed
despite a gutsy 54 from Jamie Smith.
A blistering 123 from 133 balls by Will Jacks, followed by 4 wkts each for spinners Angus Dahl and Ben
Holder brought a comfortable win over Sussex. Middx were then shot out for 94 to set up an 8 wkt win,
leaving Surrey needing to win their 2 remaining games to top the group for a home Q-Final. Sussex
scored 191-8, despite a miserly 10-over spell of 4 – 19 from the ever consistent Tyler Meyer, and then
Freddy Austin hit an undefeated 88 to take Surrey to the win. Another victory over Kent took Surrey to
a home Q-Final v Somerset.
After Somerset had been for 130 (Meyer 3-16, Jafri 3-24), Surrey’s batting frailties returned as they
slumped to 90-7 before Hennessey once again saved the day. The semi-final v Yorks was all over by
lunch as Dahl (4-12) and Culff (3-14) rushed Yorkshire out for 79 before Will Jacks (48* from 35) led
Surrey to victory in the 14th over. Surrey then took on Middx in the second all-South final in 2 years.
Despite a rapid 66 from Jacks, Surrey were again struggling at 132-6 until Bilal Mohammed (64),
supported by Hennessey, got the score up to 238-8. 2 early wickets for Culff (3-5 in 6 overs), including
Wijeratne who had scored a century the previous day, put Middx on the back foot and they never
recovered as Surrey went on to win by 137 runs.
The bowling attack of Culff, Jafri, Sameer Saleem, Shoff, Hennessey, Dahl, Meyer and Holder (not to
mention Ben Sidwell with 6-15 v Dorset) is arguably the best balanced and most effective for many
years. Although Will Jacks led the way with the bat, all the batsmen contributed at some point, but
lacked consistency.
U14 Squad: P 15 W 7 L 4 T 1 C/A 3
The U14 Squad started the season with good wins over Suffolk (by 10 wkts, Nathan Tilley 86*, George
Griffiths 48*) and Kent, where Kent had little to offer after Scott Boxall (2-10) and Tom Guise (2-10) had
knocked over the top order. There then followed defeats to a strong Essex side and to Middx. Having
posted 196-6 (Shanaal Nathan 73, Sam Hall 49), the Surrey bowlers were unable to slow the scoring as
Essex won by 3 wkts with 3 overs to spare. Rapid scoring from Jamie Smith (72 from 76 balls) and Sam
Hall (61 from 59 balls) took Surrey to a competitive 238-6 v Cambs. This looked not to be enough as
Cambs reach 180-2 in 32 overs, but then Ajeet Dale and Rehan Ratnasabapathy took 4 wkts each to see
Surrey to victory by 13 runs.
After a win over Berks (Jamie Smith 148, Nathan Tilley 76) and a 2-wkt defeat to Hants in friendly
matches, Surrey returned to Cup action with a heavy 96 run defeat away to Sussex. Rain aborted the
trip to Norfolk before Surrey travelled to Herts for their last match, needing a win to secure a top 5
finish to the group. 2nd placed Herts had reached 140-2 when spinner Freddie Boys became the 8th
bowler used by Surrey. This brought about a dramatic collapse as the home side were dismissed for
168, Boys finishing with 7-16 in 5.4 overs. Despite losing Boys for a duck, Surrey batted steadily to
reached their target for the loss of 4 wkts with 6 overs to spare.

U13 Squad: P 19 W 13 L 3 T 0 C/A 3
Following a half-term rain-off v Sussex, the U13 Squad had 3 successive wins over Bucks, Hants & Middx.
July started with another rain-off before 3 more wins against Berks, Essex & Middx. The unbeaten run
came to an end with a 6-wkt defeat by Kent, and there was one more defeat, as well as 2 wins against
Berkshire and Wales before the squad set off for the Taunton Festival.
The Surrey squad found the 50-over Festival format much to their liking as they amassed a score of 284-
7 (James Dodsworth 97) in their first match before dismissing Cumbria for 227. In the 2nd match, Lancs
chased down the Surrey total of 199-8 (Ben Geddes 54) with only 3 balls remaining for the loss of 7
wkts. Surrey then had 2 very successful chases, scoring 208-2 (Abhay Gonella 65) v Worcs and 142-1
(Ben Geddes 85) v Hants. Between these matches, Devon were also beaten to give Surrey the Festival
victory on points.

U12 Squad: P 17 W 6 L 7 T 1 C/A 3
The U12 Squad had a good start to the season, winning 3 of their first 4 matches, with Sam Williams
leading the way with scores of 90 (v Bucks), 84 (v Middx) and 51 (v Sussex). A series of poor batting
performances, including 3 totals of less 100, resulted in 5 defeats in the next 6 matches. The only win in
this period was due to a tight bowling performance which restricted Sussex to 102, which Surrey passed
for the loss of 2 wickets, Sam Williams remaining unbeaten on 46. The squad went to the Taunton
Festival and made a good start with wins chasing against Lancs and Gloucs. With the Hants match
rained off, the Festival ended with a defeat by Devon, despite Freddie Eltringham making his second 40+
score of the Festival. A further defeat to Essex ended a disappointing season for the squad.

U11 Squad: P 20 W 13 L 5 T 0 C/A 2
Winning 11 of their first 12 matches, the U11 Squad had a good season. The leading batsman was
George Roberts who scored an unbeaten 131 v Essex, backed up with scores of 75* (v Kent) and 70 (v
London Schools’ CA). He was well-supported by Joseph Baxter, George Freeman and Matt Avant-Smith,
all of whom scored 2 half-centuries. There were 2 outstanding bowling performances by Pravin
Kiritharan (6-31 v Hants) and Sam Hadfield (5-14 v Wales). Unfortunately the squad could not retain
their good form and only managed 2 wins from 5 matches at the Taunton Festival.
U10 Squad: P 19 W 11 L 6 T 0 C/A 2
After 2 early season defeats to Sussex & Berks, the U10 Squad won their next 9 matches before losing
heavily to Yorks. The Taunton Festival opened with a 3-wkt loss to Devon in spite of an unbeaten 101
from Whipple. This was the second century of the season to add to the one scored by Geddes v Essex.
The Festival finished with 2 more wins and 2 defeats. The outstanding bowling performance was
Newall’s 5-25 v Hants.

U9 Squad: P 16 W 10 L 1 T 1 C/A 4
The U9 squad played a mixture of U9 and U10 club, District & County sides from across southern
England. They only suffered one defeat to another County side, Middx. Six opposing county sides were
dismissed for under 100, including Sussex who were skittled for a total of just 7, R Ahmed taking 6wkts
for 1 run. V Patel lead the batting with 3 unbeaten half centuries.
