COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS VALUED AT BURWOOD GHS Liz James We have a wonderful School Community Youth Worker, Liz James, who has been working in our school community for the past 15 years. Liz liaises with students in an informal manner in the playground at lunchtimes to build trust and offer support. She also runs a program aimed at developing and reinforcing good social skills, resilience and the ability to make good decisions based on shared values. We feel that it is important to support young people in making the right choices and develop personal skills. Maria Hong Parents and students from a Korean background value improved communication with the school that Maria Hong has facilitated over the past two years. Maria is a wonderful support for our Korean students and their families and guardians. As part of the school’s growing focus on engagement with Asia, Korean is growing with elective language classes in Years 8-12 and a strong relationship being nurtured with Qeefaa An (Korean teacher), Maria Hong and our Korean community. Sandy Zhao Parents and students from a Chinese background also value improved communication with the school since Sandy Zhao has been working here. As part of the school’s growing focus on engagement with Asia, Chinese language classes continue to be very strong with courses for students in Beginners, Continuers, Literature and In Context students. Sandy Zhao speaks Mandarin. Brittany Kalauni Brittany is our Pacific Islander Support Officer. Brittany is of Niuean/Maori heritage born here in Australia. Brittany supports students in the classroom as well as looking out for their overall wellbeing. She acts as a positive role model for the upcoming generation of Pacific Islander students, being someone whom they can identify with and confide in. In addition, the girls are given opportunities throughout the year to showcase their Polynesian culture, typically through dance. Brittany is available once a week and students are free to visit her in the Wellbeing Office. Brittany facilitates individual sessions, group gatherings and practices. Hoai Ianitto Hoai is our Vietnamese Student Learning Support Officer and currently attends Burwood Girls one day per fortnight. Hoai speaks Vietnamese. If you would like to contact one of our Community Student Learning Support Officers or Community Youth Worker, please contact the school on 9747 3355. 3

ATTENDANCE Burwood Girls High School expects students to attend school regularly and punctually. Parents/Carers: If you know your child is going to be late or absent for the day, please notify the school before 10am by phone or email, followed by a written note. Please include the student's full name, year and date of lateness/absence on the note, or use the template notes available on the school’s website. Notes from home must be handed to the teacher during roll call. Students: If you are late to school and have a note from home, please go to the front office to ‘swipe in’ with your ID card and hand in your note, before proceeding to class. ID cards: You will receive your ID card around mid-Term 1 (after photo day). If you don’t have your ID card yet, just give the office staff your name, and they will ‘swipe in’ for you. Students: If you are late to school, and you don’t have a note from home, please go to the front office to swipe in as soon as you arrive. You will be given a computer slip to take home to be signed and returned to your roll call teacher. Unexplained lateness or absence results in an SMS message being sent to a parent’s mobile phone on the day so they are aware of the absence. This is for the safety of students. Early Leavers Students: If you know in advance that you have to leave the school during school hours, for example, to go to an appointment, you must bring a permission note from a parent/guardian and hand it to your roll call teacher. At the time you need to leave the school, collect your ‘early leave pass’ from the front office before you depart. Religious Leave Students who wish to join their family for recognised religious celebrations must bring a note requesting leave for the day (or partial day) prior to the event. If the request is authorised by the deputy principal, the day will not count towards the student’s official attendance record. Extended Leave If an extended period of leave (5 school days or more) is necessary, parents must request leave from the principal, in writing, at least one week prior to the leave, by completing the DoE form available from the front office or website. Supporting documentation is to be included (itinerary for air travel and/or copy of plane ticket). 7

It aims to improve student’s sense of belonging in a new environment and encourages them to develop peer relationships with their mentors – the Year 10 Big Sisters. Throughout the year, the program further develops skills in students that allows them to build their resiliency and wellbeing which, in turn will enhance their educational outcomes. The program also aims to develop leadership skills for the Year 10 Big Sisters. Rationale: The current Wellbeing Framework for Schools emphasises the importance of wellbeing programs to promote the development of social skills and friendship, empathy and resilience, peer support, mentoring and student leadership. It emphasises the strong links between wellbeing and students having greater satisfaction with life, more confidence and self- efficacy and greater feelings of resilience. The development of wellbeing contributes to social competence, self-esteem and a student’s sense of meaning and purpose. The Big Sister program will expose students to experiences that develop character by promoting mindfulness (emotional self-regulation and behaviour), courage and resilience. Through the development of resiliency skills, students have greater self-esteem; they stretch themselves and take risks in their learning. They are more likely to demonstrate self-discipline and effort toward their learning as well as develop strong positive character traits that are reflected in their decision making and relationships. 10
