An important day to remember is Mother's Day on May 9 to honour all the mothers of the family and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Here at Craiglee, we well celebrate mothers with a social on each floor and Serenade with Valentine. Celebrating May Victoria Day commemorated the birthday of Queen Victo- ria on May 24, 1819. The people of the British Common- wealth have always celebrated the ruling monarch's birth- Cinco de Mayo day as a patriotic holiday. However, during the lengthy life- May 5 time of Queen Victoria, her birthday came to have a spe- cial meaning. After Queen Victoria's death, people cele- brated her birthday to express their loyalty to the British Mother’s Day Empire. Cana- International Nurses Day dians now celebrate Victoria Day and the official birthday May 12 of the reigning monarch as a legal holiday on the Monday before May 25. Victoria Day (Canada) Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is May 24 the holy month of fasting celebrated by Muslims the world over. The celebration is unique in that it begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon and is not tied to a specific date. The Muslim calendar year is 354 or 355 days, making it shorter than the Gregorian calendar, which rounds out at 365 or 366 days (leap years). This means that Ramadan begins 10–12 days earlier each year, and therefore, during a 33-year cycle, Ramadan will occur dur- ing every season. Shavuot (Hebrew: )שבועותis the festival of Weeks (Pentecost) falling on the fiftieth day after the first day of Passover. Shavuot celebrates the Israelites receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is one of the three-foot festivals, the others being Passover and Succot (Tabernacles), in which the Jewish men used to go by foot to the Holy Tem- ple in Jerusalem, Israel. 20
The week draws attention to nurses, increasing the awareness of the public, policy-makers and governments of the many contri- butions of nursing to the well-being of Canadians. In 1971, ICN designated May 12, the birthday of nurs- ing pioneer Florence Nightingale, as International Nurses Day. In 1985, CNA members passed a resolu- tion to begin negotiations with the federal government to have the week containing May 12 proclaimed as National Nurses Week annually. Soon after, the feder- al minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. In 1993, the name was changed to National Nursing Week to emphasize the profession's accomplish- ments as a discipline. To all the nurses and person- al support workers, thank you for the great things that you do! 2 19
May Birthdays In astrology, those born between May 1–20 are the Bulls of Taurus. Not only do Bulls work hard with a determined and tireless manner, but they enjoy the payoff, rewarding themselves for a job well done. These stable and reliable types won’t finish the job until they are completely satisfied. Those born from May 21–31 are the Twins of Gemini. Gemini’s dual nature is expressed through its skillful communi- cation and dynamic sociability. The Twins are energetic, quick-witted, optimistic, and emotionally intelligent. 18 3

HOME UPDATES PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS Dietary Department Meet the Cook "Hello, my name is Carl Lewis. I am the Late Cook at Craiglee Nursing Home. I have been working at Craiglee for 25 years. Inspired by my grandparents and their love for cooking, I started my career at Craiglee as a Dietary Aide. I continued my culinary pursuit by returning to school and earning my Culi- nary Diploma. Now I'm the Full-Time Late/Evening Cook. It is a pleasure and honour to cook for the residents, knowing the food I create makes a difference in the lives of those I feed. Food is love, and I share my passion with you each day. When I hear "give the compliment to the chef," I know that Craiglee is the best place to be. Thank you, Carl, for your years of service.
