Section b: faq HOW SHOULD I PACK? Please take a look at our Residence Move In Day Information webpage to be up-to-date with all important Admis- sions Information, and check out our detailed list of what to bring and what not to bring for Traditional, Semi-Suite and Townhouse residences. Please note: If you plan on having mail or packages delivered to residence, please DO NOT send anything before Saturday, September 1st as we do not have the space to store items prior to your arrival. Have it delivered to you at home or after you have moved into residence. See the Residence Handbook for details on how to address it.
Section b: faq WHAT APPLIANCES AND FURNISHINGS AM I ALLOWED? All Brock University Residence rooms are already fully furnished with a twin bed, a dresser, a desk and chair, closet or wardrobe, shelving, and garbage bins. Townhouse Style residences also have furnished living rooms and kitchens equipped with a sofa, a chair, tables, and eating area. If you're thinking about bringing extra furnishings and/or appliances you must read our Allowable Appliances and Allowable Furnishings documents. Due to your room and unit being fully furnished there is limited space for extra furnishings and appliances, and any- thing that is brought in must be made of metal or plastic. Why? To help reduce fire safety hazards and potential pest problems. Everyone wants to be on the safe side! Want to see how fast a residence room could go up in flames? Come to the Live Burn during O-Week! It will set your mind ablaze!
Section b: faq CONTENT INSURANCE It is important to know that you are responsible for insuring your own belongings. Brock University is NOT responsible or liable (directly or indirectly) for your belongings should they become damaged or if they are stolen. Content insurance is insurance that pays for damage to, or loss of, an individual’s possessions while they are located within that individual’s home. Usually, your parent/guardian can add coverage to their home insurance plan. Brock University is currently investigating an insurance program that will be charged to all residence students, except to those who provide proof of reasonable coverage by a predetermined deadline (likely to be mid-September). Details will be announced when they become available. Should this program not be offered, all residence students must get their own insurance. Contents insurance is insurance that pays for damage to, or loss of, an individual’s possessions whilst they are located within that individual’s home.
Section b: faq ACCESSIBILITY ON CAMPUS Accommodations in Vallee, Earp, Village and Lowenberger are available for students with accessibility needs. There are rooms available for specific accessibility needs, such as: visual fire alarms, door openers, accessi- ble washrooms and showers etc. However, we are only able to make accommodations for students with these needs who have told us in the online application process (there was a specific section in your applica- tion that you needed to fill out for this purpose). If you have accessibility needs pertaining to your resi- dence stay, and have not already contacted us, please e-mail the Department of Residences at res@brocku.ca as soon as possible so we can help make your residence stay better. In addition to letting us know, it is recommended that you register with Student Accessibility Services in or- der to receive academic accommodations if necessary. You can get all essential information here: https://brocku.ca/sas/ Contact them via phone 905-688-5550 ext. 3240 or e-mail them at askSAS@brocku.ca If you have a family member coming with you on move-in who has accessibility needs, please email us at res@brocku.ca so we can work with you to ensure their accessibility needs are met so they can also enjoy the experience with you. To find out more information about Brock's accessibility visit the Accessibility on Campus site.
Section b: faq RESIDENCE COMMUNITY STANDARDS (RCS) The residence community is a unique environment in which we aim to balance residents’ needs as well as their academic successes during the students’ time in residence. For this purpose, Brock University’s Department of Residences has created a document entitled Residence Community Standards (RCS) which defines unacceptable behavior, outlines the levels and types of infractions, and describes in detail both the manner in which infractions are enforced and the kinds of sanctions applied. Residents are ex- pected to read, understand and abide by the information contained in this document. Each year we re- view the Residence Community Standards to best reflect our expectations for residents at Brock Univer- sity. Please review the updated Residence Community Standards at https://brocku.ca/residence/ important-information/residence-community-standards/. You will also receive an updated copy in your move-in package on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018. Please note: When you electronically submitted your application to residence using your my.brocku.ca account, you agreed to the following terms and conditions: For more information regarding the Residence Community Standards, please see the Residence Handbook
Section b: faq CAN I BRING MY PET? As stated in the Residence Community Standards, which you agreed to when you applied to residence and will agree to again once you move in, PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN RESIDENCE, not even for a visit! What does the Residence Community Standards say exactly? “Pets in Residence” (Level 2) Pets are not allowed in residence (not even as visitors to your residence). Only non-dangerous fish in aquariums no larger than 5 gallons are permitted. If a student chooses to have such a tank, they are responsible for ensuring its maintenance. No debris from the tank (including rocks/gravel) may be put down any drain in residence. [Please note: Certified service animals are permitted in residence while wearing identifying clothing (for non-residents) or with proper medical/supporting documenta- tion and prior permission from the Manager, Residence Admissions and Administration (for resi- dents)]. Charges for repairs or cleaning due to having a pet in residence will apply.” This excerpt was taken from the Facilities Infraction Categories section of the Residence Community Standards at https://brocku.ca/residence/important-information/residence-community- standards/817-2/#1458674020905-c97ab476-818f
Section b: faq ROOM LAYOUTS Want to see a typical layout of your residence room!? Click one of the following links to get a better un- derstanding of your space! Earp Vallee Quarry View DeCew Single DeCew Double Lowenberger Single and Double Village Single Village Double Please note that these pictures are not to scale, but are simply a representation of the layout and furnish- ings in a typical room so you have an idea of what your residence room will be like upon your arrival. In most cases, the residence furniture is moveable, so you can rearrange your room to what is most com- fortable for you. However, you must remember that before you move out you must put your room back to the original layout. When you move-in you will receive a Bedroom Inventory and Condition Report which will identify which style layout is most applicable to your room, please make sure to hold onto this sheet for reference at the end of the year. The End of Term notice is an incredibly important document for when you move-out of residence, be- cause if you do not follow it, there will be financial consequences. This document is part of your residence agreement and cannot be disregarded. So please take fabulous care of your residence space and save your money!
Section b: faq AM I ABLE TO ARRIVE EARLY? Unfortunately, we do not allow students to move in before their scheduled move in times. (see When Can I Move-in). Please don’t come early. Please come during your designated time slot. Arriving on time helps to ensure and maintain traffic flow on campus and helps to alleviate congestion since over 2400 students will be moving into residence. Arriving on time also allows the University to make special arrangements to help your move go smoothly, such as: additional staff who help direct traffic, volunteers who are designated to areas at specific times to help transport your belongings to your room, and Residence Life Staff who welcome you to your floor.
Section c: arriving on campus ARRIVING ON CAMPUS When you arrive on campus on Sunday, September 2nd, look for a color coded sign with your building/residence name on it at one of the two main entrances to campus. Follow these signs and they will take you through the internal Brock roads to the unloading zone closest to your residence. Volunteers will be along the route to help guide you. At your unloading zone, have your move- in parking permit visible on the dash of your car (this is e-mailed to your Brock account in late August). Ensure your driver knows which room in residence you will be staying in Leave the driver with the vehicle to follow staff direction while you (the student) go get your keys from your registration table. Have your Brock card in your hand when you go to the registration table (if you did not get your Brock card prior to move-in, please have another form of identification on hand). You will be given your keys, asked to sign that you have received the proper keys, and asked to sign the Residence Agree- ment (the terms and conditions of living in residence). If you were under 18 when you applied to Resi- dence, you will need a guardian's signature. Take your keys, head to your room/unit. Volunteers will likely have unloaded your belongings and placed them outside your room/unit. (This is also why you want to label your belongings!) After the car is unloaded, the driver will move the car to the LONG TERM PARKING LOT. There will be several signs directing them. The driver can meet up with you at your room, where hopefully you’ll have already begun to unpack and make it feel like home! You may want to leave your room door open, so that you can meet floor or house mates. However, don’t leave your door propped unless you are present in your room, as that is a fire hazard, as well as a safety issue for your belongings!
Section c: arriving on campus ARRIVING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION If students are arriving by taxi, shuttle or another form of paid transportation, please follow the signage to your building entrance. General building directions are on the next page of this docu- ment. Ask the staff directing traffic where the closest point to get dropped off is. FOR A MOVE-IN DAY CAMPUS MAP PLEASE SEE PAGE 16.
