Introduction When you are offered a place to study at Leeds Conservatoire, your next step is to find somewhere to live. The following information is to assist you in your accommodation choices. The Leeds Conservatoire Accommodation team manage the allocation of rooms at two accommodation sites; Joseph Stones House and One Mill Street. Unfortunately, the number of students requiring accommodation exceeds the number of rooms available at these locations. However, if you are not allocated a room at Joseph Stones House or One Mill Street, or you would like to live elsewhere, there is a wide variety of other student accommodation available in Leeds. This booklet is intended to guide you through the options available, in order to help you find somewhere suitable to live. The Leeds Conservatoire Accommodation team are also on hand to help guide you through the process, and can be reached directly via 0113 222 3411 or by emailing accommodation@leedsconservatoire.ac.uk if you require any further information or assistance. Joseph Stones House is situated directly above the main conservatoire building and boasts Joseph Stones House award-winning architecture and sweeping views of the city. It comprises 190 study bedrooms, all with ON-SITE FACILITIES en-suite facilities, clustered in flats with shared kitchen and living spaces. We allocate 152 Reception Office Laundry Room rooms through the conservatoire and the remainder of the rooms are available to book 24-hour helpline direct through the Unite Students website Lifts to all floors (provided by Unite Students) www.unitestudents.com. One Mill Street ON-SITE FACILITIES Reception with Cardio Suite communal lounge area One Mill Street is a large, modern development. Applying for a room at Joseph Stones House or One Mill Street Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis, to first year undergraduates. You should only apply for accommodation if you have an offer of study from us (conditional or unconditional) and have firmly accepted it. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from students who: -- Have put Leeds Conservatoire as their insurance choice. -- Are still awaiting an offer of study. -- Currently reside in the West Yorkshire area. -- Are under 18 years of age at the start of the tenancy in September and want to live at Joseph Stones House. We may prioritise students who: -- Declare a disability requiring specific equipment or support, providing they make an early application. -- Are returning students with identified specific needs. -- Are first year international students. The application form is available from this page on our website from early April: www.leedsconservatoire.ac.uk/ accommodation At Joseph Stones House, in agreement with Leeds Conservatoire, Unite Students can allocate thirty-eight rooms to students who apply directly to them via www.unitestudents.com (Terms and conditions will differ). Application Procedures From early April 1. Complete the online accommodation form available at: www.leedsconservatoire.ac.uk/accommodation. Please allow approximately 6 weeks for your form to be processed. 2. You will receive a letter from the conservatoire with your room number and weekly rent cost. Unite Students or Unipol Housing will be informed. If there are no rooms available, you will be informed and given a list of alternative accommodation. 3. If you are allocated a room at Joseph Stones House, Unite Students will contact you by email with details of how you and your guarantor can complete your booking online and will request an Advance Rent Payment of £250. 4. If you are allocated a room at One Mill Street, Unipol Housing will contact you by email with details of how to complete your booking online and will request a deposit of £150. 5. After the Tenancy Agreement has been signed, Unite Students or Unipol Housing will be responsible for your accommodation and all enquiries should be directed to them. Unipol Housing Unipol is a not-for-profit charitable trust, partly funded by the universities and colleges in Leeds, including Leeds Conservatoire. It was founded to help students find a safe, secure and well-managed place to live. Not only do Unipol have their own accommodation, but they also recommend houses, flats and rooms let by private landlords who have signed up to the ‘Unipol Code of Conduct’ which gives students peace of mind about the physical state of the property and ensures they are treated fairly. Unipol is popular with our second and third year students and those with unconditional offers, who would like to live in flats that are near the conservatoire, e.g. New York Street and Alexander Court. Unipol are able to accommodate students who are under eighteen. They have a Tenancy Support Worker who can assist in finding suitable accommodation for students who are under eighteen years of age and can meet regularly for the duration of the tenancy to deal with any problems that may arise. Shared Houses The average cost of renting a shared house in Leeds is approximately £89 per person, per week (or £106 including bills). If you choose to share a house, please do not sign a contract unless you are sure you want to share with the other occupants or you have checked that there are other people moving into the house with you. This applies whether you go through Unipol or look by yourself. You could end up paying for the whole house. Many rooms are let with the tenancy stating that the tenants are ‘jointly and severally liable’. This means that one, or all of you, can be held responsible for the whole rent.
