Countryside Services Welcome to our 2019 spring and summer events leaflet covering all things countryside. We have a vast array of activities and events over the spring and summer period for everyone to enjoy. Each activity and event states the location, cost, time and if you need to book within the description, if you would like more information on a specific activity or event, please contact the centre. Become a Countryside Volunteer Would you like to be involved in developing and maintaining the countryside sites across the borough, offer support at some of our fantastic events, or help out in one of the visitor centre shops? The role of a Countryside Volunteer is varied. You can help with developing and maintaining paths and fences, woodland management, pond work, and planting trees or selling tickets and helping with crafts at events, or meeting and greeting visitors into the centre and selling gifts and toys in the shop. If you want to get active in your community get in touch. Interested? Redcar and Cleveland’s Walking Festivals Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Countryside Service, in partnership with local community groups and organisations, will be hosting two Walking Festivals this year. The Walking Festival is an exciting event that includes walks for everyone from beginners to the more advanced walker. It offers people the opportunity to see areas of the borough they may not have seen before. FEBRUARY BED AND BREAKFAST FOR THE BIRDS Monday 18th February 1pm-3pm Guisborough Forest & Walkway Make your own bird box and messy feeders to take home to help the birds in your garden. For everyone who makes a box or feeder there will be a free trail around the wood to explore, that will give you lots of tips and tricks for attracting wildlife to your garden. MARCH RUSTIC STOOL MAKING Friday 22nd March 9.30am - 3pm Kirkleatham Museum Situated within the woodlands of Kirkleatham Museum, come along and try your hand at creating your very own traditionally made stool for you to take home with you at the end of the day. You will learn how to make and use traditional hand tools used in creating your unique finished stool. Course fee includes refreshments and a BBQ style lunch. Due to the complexity of the event, places available are limited to 5 participants. Cost £60 per person (upon booking there will be a non-refundable £20 deposit, with the remaining balance to be paid on the day of the event). APRIL EASTER WILDLIFE EXPLORERS 12th April 1pm - 3pm Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park Hands on activities, trail and scavenger hunt to get your little ones exploring Flatts Lane woodland and engaging with nature and embracing spring. MAY BAT WALK & TALK Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park Friday 24th May 8:30pm – 10:00pm Guisborough Forest & Walkway Monday 27th May 8:30 pm- 10:00pm This will be rescheduled in the case of bad weather, check Facebook or at Visitor Centre for details. Get to know our amazing bat species and experience them with the aid of bat detectors to hear their echolocation sounds. Learn about the year in the life of these fascinating animals and some myth busting! Free to attend and no booking required. BEES AND BUGS BONANZA Friday 31st May 1pm - 3pm Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park Hands on, engaging and buzzing! Discover all about minibeasts through bug hunts, adventure trails and activities around Flatts Lane. Cost £2 per child
JUNE TRADITIONAL TOY MAKING FOR FATHER’S DAY Saturday 8th June 1pm - 3pm Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park Try your hand at making some old favourite wooden toys, like a marble run maze, cup and ball or skittles. Perfect practical afternoon to do with the ‘big kid in your life’, or as a surprise present for Father’s Day. JULY SUMMER MARKET Saturday 13th July 11am - 3pm Guisborough Forest & Walkway Come along to our summer market to browse the local stalls and purchase some lovely unique treats and gifts. Free entry THE BIG BIO-BLITZ Saturday 27th July 10am-4pm (and evening Bat Walk) Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park The ultimate day out for all the family! Join us as we aim to record as many different species as possible in one day through a massive range on hands on and fun activities such as pond dipping, bug hunting, bird watching, flower finding and even bat detecting. It’s a BIG day with loads going on and prizes for those who have a go at everything, but you’re free to just come and have a look and have a go at whatever you fancy or have time for. All activities are beginner friendly with lots of helpful wildlife experts around to help with the tricky bits. All records from the day will contribute to North East Environmental Records Information Centre, so as well as being a super fun day out, you’ll be contributing to real science. Free entry
GIANT BEACH ART & SANDCASTLES Wednesday 31st July (time TBC due to tide, please call 01642 496430 closer to the time) Saltburn beach Join us once again on Saltburn beach for our ever popular giant art session, this year we have added sandcastles to be created. Cost £2 per child AUGUST THE FLATTS LANE ELF & FAIRY FUN DAY Saturday 10th August 11am - 3pm Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park The Flatts Lane Fun Day is back, but this year with an added twist. All the usual family fun, such as climbing wall and face painting, but this year we’ll have an ‘Enchanted Woodland’ activity arena packed with hands on and engaging nature crafts, activities and games. Come in fancy dress (optional) and with a sense of adventure and wonder (essential)! Free entry www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/countryside
DISCOVERING ROCK POOLS Monday 12th August (time TBC due to tide, please call 01642 496430 closer to the time) Saltburn beach Join us again at Saltburn beach, meeting at the slipway near the Ship Inn to discover a watery world of surprises as we see what the Sea has left behind for a short while between tides. Cost £2 per child, nets and viewing trays are provided, but suitable footwear will be needed.
