5 HOW ENGLAND’S COVID LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS WILL BE LIFTED Step 1, part 2 – 29 March Outdoor gatherings allowed of up to six people, or two house- holds if this is larger, not just in parks but also gardens. Outdoor sport for children and adults will be allowed including outdoor swimming pools. The official stay at home order will end, but people will be en- couraged to stay local – the definition of local will largely be left to people’s discretion. People will still be asked to work from home where possible, with no overseas travel allowed beyond the current small number of exceptions. Step 2 – no earlier than 12 April Reopening of non-essential retail, hair and nail salons, and public buildings such as libraries. Most outdoor venues open, including pubs and restaurants but only for outdoor tables and beer gardens. Customers will have to be seated but there will be no need to have a meal with alcohol. Also reopening will be settings such as zoos and theme parks. However, social contact rules will apply here, so no indoor mix- ing between households and limits on outdoor mixing. Indoor leisure facilities such as gyms and pools can also open but again people can only go alone or with their own household. Reopening of holiday lets with no shared facilities, but only for one household. Funerals can have up to 30 attendees, while weddings, receptions and wakes can have 15. While it is not part of step 2, this is the earliest point after which the bulk of university students could know about the resumption of face-to-face classes. A review of this will take place at the end of the Easter holidays.
6 HORNBY PENSIONERS I hope you are all well and have been enjoying the early signs of spring. Such a lovely optimistic time of year! Thank you to those who responded to last month's request for feed- back, which concluded that meetings in the Institute should not be held before members have had their 2nd vaccine injection. This means that, hopefully, our first event this year will be the June trip. All being well, details of the itinerary, arrangements on the coach and how to book will be published in next month's edition of this newsletter. Fingers crossed everybody! In the meantime, take care, stay safe & enjoy the season. JANE’S WISH Rachel and Jonathan Murton have given Beryl a huge £1741 from contributions in memory of Jane. It was Jane's wish that this should go to the Drop-In and it is hoped that we can use the money to buy new curtains for the Drop-In room. We would like to say thank you to Jonathan, Rachel and of course Jane

As always, we are focusing on making sure that swimming continues to be available for all. Our next big step is for General Public Sessions which, subject to current government legislation, will commence on 12th April. Please check out our website and the revised operating guidelines and timetables when published. Above all come back and enjoy your pool again, we so look forward to seeing you. 8 ROTARY CLUB OF LUNESDALE On 25th February, the club was privileged to have a speaker from the lesser-known part of the medical profession. Members welcomed Kadaba Srinath Vasuden who likes to be called simply Vas. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Blackpool Palatine. It was a surprise to hear, early on in his talk, that as a one-year-old toddler he had been the victim of polio. It was learning about the global Rotary commitment to rid the world of polio that attracted him to become a Rotarian himself. He gave a fascinating talk about his work and that of his colleagues referring to himself and them as The Backroom Boys. His subject is Histopathology which is the diagnosis and study of diseases of the body’s tissues. This involves examining under a micro- scope tissues and or cells. The results of such detailed examination help clinicians to manage a patient’s care. Vas explained that the com- mon concept of a pathologist is a person who examines dead bodies. He emphasised however that the examination under a microscope of tissues and cells is a vital process which assists in determining the cause of problems very much in the living! On March 4th Stephen Hinde, a retired police officer, an ISO (Information Security Officer) gave an excellent talk. He spoke about his career in the force and his involvement in solving the cases of 3 murders. On 11th March Graham Jackson gave an extremely interesting talk about the history of legal dress. He spoke about the use of vibrant colours of the robes worn by the judiciary e.g., scarlet, gold and blue, the materials used including silks, taffeta, and white fur plus an expla- nation about the different types of wigs worn. The result of being confronted by such impressive attire can be very intimidating to the criminal in the dock! Keep well, keep safe. Lilian
9 HORNBY VILLAGE TRUST The sun is shining, spring is all around and some of the lockdown restrictions are soon to be lifted. Yippee! With that in mind HVT is working towards the re-opening of the Institute around the 17th of May. It is possible that some groups may be allowed to return earlier so look out for notices in the bus shelter and at the Institute. Whatever 'normality' looks like the Institute will be back to hosting events, parties, BBQs, weddings and much, much more as soon as we are allowed. If you are thinking of a party or event, then do con- tact Jill on 015242 22227 as we are taking provisional bookings (with all the usual caveats). In the meantime, the roof on the cottage is being replaced and we are obtaining quotes for some internal work needing to be done in the In- stitute. HVT Committee The Hair Bank is due to open its doors on Tuesday 13th April (depending on government guidelines). Steven is also welcoming Rhiannan to the business, who will be offering a range of beauty treat- ments. Both are looking forward to opening the doors and providing a profes- sional, friendly service for faces, old and new. Appointments for both Hair and Beauty are now being taken. For Hair - Steven on 07983778718 For Beauty - Rhiannan on 07825983347 (See pages 2 and 32 for full price list)

13 NEW SIGNS ON WATER TREATMENT GATE An Explanation Every morning John and I always walked along the river to the water treatment gate with our unofficial dog walking group. When we arrived John would tap out a tune on the bars which we had to recognise and then sing it. It became quite a tradition, and af- ter he died last month our friends decided to put this plaque up to remember him and his 'unforgettable tuning stick'. He would have loved it! Judie Surridge

15 HORNBY–WITH-FARLETON PARISH COUNCIL Thursday 11th March 2021 The Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) was dis- cussed. Representatives from both United Utilities and LCC Highways were present. United Utilities led the presentation and discussion including the background and the importance of the project. The discussion also detailed what stage United Utilities are at now and how they plan to progress. HPC acknowledge that this work does need to be carried out, but highlighted safety concerns surrounding large vehicles and increased traffic on the B6480. It is felt that real consideration needs to be given to the section of the road surrounding Butt Yeats and Lunesdale Court in the planning application due to be submitted by United Utilities to LCC in June 2021. Volunteers have approached HPC to clean up the area around the War Memorial, shelter and bench. As HPC do not own these assets, they don’t have the authority to give the volunteers permission. How- ever, HPC has encouraged the volunteers to carry out the ‘tidy up’ of the area on their own initiative. HPC are now looking into adopting the war memorial, shelter and bench and have it covered under the HPC insurance for the future if possible. More detailed minutes will be available after they have been approved at the next meeting. The next meeting will be held (via Zoom) on Thursday 8 th April 2021 at 7pm. Joining instructions will be displayed on the agenda that will be placed in the notice boards on Monday 5th April, if you need any assistance please contact the clerk. Take care of yourselves and those around you. Hannah Wallington (Clerk) 07815 604527 hornbypc@gmail.com, 5 Monteagle Square, Hornby, Lancaster

18 HORNBY ST MARGARET’S PRIMARY SCHOOL We are so pleased to see all the children back in school. The children are happy to be back too, happy to learn in classrooms and happy to see their friends. They are inventing islands, learning about climate change, and do- ing some outdoor circuit training too. On Ellen’s island you will find a Boomerang Otter: This is a type of otter found in tropical rainforests living close to water. It is a cross between an otter and a monkey it keeps the otter ap- pearance but has monkey like characteristics. It is good at swimming and climbing. It eats fish and fruit in trees. It is called a Boomerang Otter as it must go back to water once every 2 weeks. Whilst learning at home, the Juniors were treated to a World Book Day event online with the author Andrew Cope. The children dressed in dis- guise, discussed the Spy Dog novels, and were then set a writing chal- lenge. Andrew, who has a PhD in being happy (yes, really!) also reminded them that one sure way to happiness is to always try their best with everything that they do and to READ, READ, READ! Congratulations to Noah and Isabel who won the writing challenge with some great stories written in only a couple of hours! The Infants have been busy writing too. They’ve been honing their per- suasive writing skills by trying to convince Horrid Henry’s parents to let Henry have a party and trying to encourage a scared koala out of a tree! They are now learning all about Arctic Foxes – did you know that Arctic Foxes are the only canines to have fur on the bottom of their feet? Before we know it, the children will be enjoying a well-deserved break and then enjoying the fun that Summer Term always brings. From all at Hornby School, Happy Easter!
19 We’re going on a ROCK HUNT! Fancy an alternative Easter Egg Hunt this year? Hornby St Margaret’s PTA will hide a series of painted rocks around Hornby village. Each rock serves as a clue guiding you on your hunt. Complete the trail to receive an Easter prize! Maps available to purchase for £1.50 from the school office, Hornby Village Stores or Rachel (07384 324866). The bearer of the map will be entitled to one tasty Easter treat. The Rock Hunt will take place on Easter Sunday 2-4pm and Easter Monday 2-4pm. Please keep all locations top secret and follow COVID safe rules – keep your distance and wash your hands. SNOWDROPS FOR ST MARGARET’S CHURCHARD Margie Dixon would just like to thank everyone who has donated snowdrops. They have all been planted and should result in a lovely display for years to come.
20 TALES FROM A PARISHIONER The Great Fire – aka Sky Lanterns In a village far, far away from Hornby it was a fine night with a few clouds but no wind. So, us oldies and two young grandsons went into the garden with a Sky Lantern. One of two given to them by their ‘aunt’ who promised it would float gently into the night sky casting a warm glow over everything. Grandad opened the lantern, exclaiming in surprise at the size. Nana held it while he bent to light the innocuous square under it. Then together held it until, as the instructions said, the lantern filled with heat and floated gently upwards – straight into the apple tree and getting wedged on the washing line! Gran- dad grabbed it while Nana grabbed the excited, dancing boys and each retreated to opposite corners of the garden. Grandad went up to the workshop, climbing the steps to give him extra height. One little boy was shouting ‘chuck it up, Grandad’ while Nana was shouting ‘no, let it go gently or you’ll set fire to it’!! It was finally released – again – to fulfil its role in life, gentle pleasure as it ascended to the Heavens. No! – it floated for about 5 seconds and Nana had just opened her mouth to say ‘Ahh’ when a breeze caught it; whipped it upwards and sideways towards the worthy couple’s humble abode. It sailed over the roof with a veritable Viking Burial of flames coming from un- derneath heading for the unsuspecting village. The boys and Nana raced into the house, to the front bedroom window, but no sign of it. Thankfully, no sign of houses on fire either. But what did anyone who spied it think – they would never enter a public house again. Was it an alien craft, a fireball from the outer reaches of space? The couple and the little boys quietly closed the door; put out the porch light and listened for the Fire Engine. And the other Sky Lantern I can hear you ask – it’s safely back in the bag and on top of the wardrobe waiting for a visit to somewhere suitable – The Sahara or Antarctica or somewhere of that ilk!!!

24 CATON AND BROOKHOUSE FRIENDSHIP CLUB As most of our members have had their 2nd Covid 19 vaccine or they have a date to attend for one and the rules indicated that non urgent retail could open on the 12th of April, we hoped our April trip to Boundary mill might go ahead. However, the rules still indicate that unnecessary travel outside the local area was not allowed. We did contact Bibby’s and they confirmed that unfortunately our 15th of April trip is covered by this rule and has been cancelled. Our next trip to Lytham and Dobbies garden centre on the 20 th of May when we hope the travel ban will be lifted. Again we have everything crossed that it will go ahead and we can meet our friends, have some much needed fresh air and buy our bedding out plants. Pick up at the Victoria Institute at 9.30am then on to pick up at Brookhouse. (Other pick up points can be arranged by calling our secretary). If you are aware of anyone who is not receiving their ‘Link’ please let our secretary know. 31 HORNBY ART GROUP I have been really pleased with the response to our artwork being dis- played on the front cover of the Contact magazine every month. Your appreciation of our work is most welcome. Normally our work is displayed along the gallery on the upper floor of the Institute and is replenished by new efforts every two months. Meetings usually take place on Wednesday afternoons between 2pm and 4 pm from September through to April and it is so very disappointing that our group meetings continue to be on hold. The earliest opportunity to recommence meetings will therefore be at the beginning of September this year. I am afraid that our membership is extremely low however and the suc- cessful continuation of the group will depend on our being able to attract more people with a keen interest in developing artistic skills. A desire to represent all that appeals to you, through colour is all that you need. We can provide help with all the necessary techniques needed, to develop what you wish to achieve. If you would like more information regarding the group, please do not hesitate to call me, Ann Nash 015242 22595 I enclose an image of one of my latest challenges. A seascape, some- thing that I have only attempted once before, on account of there being so many blues! It makes a change from landscapes, where the problem is that there are so many greens!
32 Final date for inclusion in the May 2021 edition is 19th April.
