Xavier Cluster Day Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College, INSPIRED BY THE EXAMPLE OF URSULA FRAYNE ‐ INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Ursula Frayne’s contribu on to Western Australia as a pioneer educator and social reformer was formally recognised on Interna onal Women’s Day last Monday, 8 March, when she was inducted into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame. “Choose to Challenge”, was the theme for Interna onal Women’s Day, and this is precisely what Ursula did on her arrival to WA more than 175 years ago. Imbued with jus ce, compassion, hospitality, excel‐ lence and respect our College is honoured to be named a er Mother Ursula Frayne. She was a truly remarkable Western Australian leaving her homeland of Ireland to educate children in the newly formed colony of Perth. Her work extended to all children and whilst the society of the me created division and segrega on, Ursula did not see difference; she welcomed all children into her newly formed school Year 5 students in 2020, posing with community. FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 32 ISSUE 5 / TERM 1 / 12 MARCH 2021 From the Vice Principal cont... Ursula brought Catholic Educa on to Western Australia 176 years ago in response to a need for a teacher. Her legacy lives and breathes in each staff member employed within Catholic Educa on today. Interna onal Women’s Day is an opportune me to reflect on the women we admire in our own lives and the women we aspire to be. Whilst I have a leadership role in the profession I love, the measure of my success is not found in the tle I hold or the salary I make. Success for me is found in the fullness of my humanity, lived out in the extraordinarily ordinary experiences of rela onships with others. I am a moth‐ er, sister, daughter, wife, friend, teacher and colleague. Interna onal Women’s Day is a celebra on of my capacity to freely live out these roles in the way that I choose to. Whilst I am conscious that I have the freedom to do this, I also know how fortunate I am. The ordinary experiences of life today, have been fought hard for by those genera ons before us. Being able to marry and remain employed full me, enjoying a drink at a bar and vo ng this Saturday at the state elec on, are examples of behaviours that women in Australia can freely do. The lives of women have changed drama cally since Ursula’s arrival; however, I do contemplate the new challenges for women as they navigate the demands of balancing work, family and play. The sta s cs around the world highligh ng the inequi es that women con nue to experience are confron ng. Domes c violence, sexual abuse, gender salary gaps and restric ons on access to employment are issues which s ll need to be resolved. Each one of us as a role to play in the provision of a safe and just world. What do we choose to challenge in our day to day lives? Ursula Frayne made a difference in the short me that she lived and worked in Western Australia. She chose to challenge the societal norms of the me and in doing so is remembered as a remarkable woman. We are very proud to have Ursula Frayne as the patron of our College and in the words of our school prayer we are ‘inspired by her example’. If you ever take a stroll down St George’s Terrace you will see a plaque in honour of her contribu on to Western Australia near the corner of Barrack Street. Ursula’s influence was far reaching. It is wonderful to have her recognised in this year’s list of inductees into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame. With regards and best wishes Mrs Veronica Parker Vice Principal Chaplain’s Reflection ALMSGIVING Almsgiving is any material favour done to assist the needy prompted by charity. It is much more than just giving something away, rather if it is done with love, almsgiving becomes a prayer and a form of sacrifice pleasing to God. Moreover, giving alms to the poor is one of the most important witnesses to fraternal charity and one of the works of mercy. So, it is evident that Charity, that is the ability or power which disposes us to love God above all things and to love ourselves and our neighbours for the sake of God, must be there to be genuine alms‐giving. Pope Francis, in his Lenten message for 2021, reaffirms that our almsgiving needs to be done with love: "Love is a giŌ that gives meaning to our lives. It enables us to view those in need as members of our own family, as friends, brothers or sisters. A small amount, if given with love, never ends, but becomes a source of life and happiness. Such was the case with the jar of meal and jug of oil of the widow of Zarephath, who offered a cake of bread to the prophet Elijah (cf. 1 Kings 17:7‐16); it was also the case with the loaves blessed, broken and given by Jesus to the disciples to distribute to the crowd (cf. Mk 6:30‐44). Such is the case too with our almsgiving, whether small or large, when offered with joy and simplicity." During this me of Lent, let us be a en ve to the needs of the people around us and those who ask for help. Maybe all we can give is a smile, but maybe that is the sacrifice needed at that moment and indeed the more generous almsgiving. Fr Jesus Bello College Chaplain, Duncan Campus Frayne News | Page 2

FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 32 ISSUE 5 / TERM 1 / 12 MARCH 2021 Are You Interested? WA Women’s Hall of Fame 2021 Exhibi ons This year the WA Women’s Hall of Fame inducted women (including Mother Ursula Frayne) posthumously to ensure that all Western Australian women had the opportunity to be recognised. From the tradi onal custodians of this land for tens of thousands of years, to pioneer women who made this country their new home. These are women who o en faced hardship and loss but did so with determina on and resilience. As we emerge from the challenges of last year, it is hoped people will draw inspira on and strength from the journey of others. All the women acknowledged have made a significant contribu on to WA’s history prior to 1921. Their stories are as varied as they are ‘inspiring’ and give a great representa on of the important part women have always made to Western Australia. You can see their journeys at a FREE exhibi on in the City of Perth. Photographic Exhibi on: Brookfield Place, Tower 1 8‐20 March, (weekdays only), 7.00am‐6.00pm Frayne News | Page 5
