MARCH 2020 Classic Clatter The Journal of the Classic & Enthusiasts Motor Cycle Club of NSW Inc. WWW.CEMCC.ORG.AU CEMCC Orange Country Bike Rally February 15 2020 - Morning Tea at Cudal Public School
SOUTH RIDE 22 JANUARY 2020 Another good turnout today of 22 bikes. A nice cool run home through the park, but a bit too warm from Caringbah on for me. Still great to be out on the bike with some mates. Photos by Michael Gilchrist. Caption by Richard Ementon. -2-

No. Y2262142 Noises from the Big End. I am pleased to announce the January general meeting decided to make available funds (up to $1000) through the Col Corley bequest, as a float for any of the rally and event committees to use as loan deposits to secure camp sites / function bookings / catering, ETC, ETC. The intention is that the float is not a gift, but a loan which must be returned after the financials for the event are finalised. A motion was passed at the January meeting to accept the new artwork for the club logo, as outlined in the November Clatter and as shown herein. It will be OK to use up any existing stationery and regalia with any of the old logos, however, it is important to use the new logo in all new club, correspondence, transactions and purchases of stationery and regalia Etc. In this edition I am trialing one of the new club templates, showcasing the options we have with our new club logos / letterheads and watermarks. I will be emailing the new artwork to each of the branches and committee for use as required. Further I am happy to report that a motion was passed for the club to help with the bush fire relief fund and as a result $1000 has been donated through the Vinnies Relief Fund. I urge members to support any of those disadvantaged by the bush fires, in any way they can. We are still looking for a rally organiser and committee to organise the Oberon rally for 2020 otherwise this Classic event will (sadly) pass into obscurity. Please contact me if you are able to help keep this event on our calendar. Congratulations to Ken Poole for winning the first quiz for the year, with a Jackpot value of $68 cash plus a $50 Bunnings voucher. The three quiz questions were 1) Who wrote ‘Symphony Number 9’? 2) How many feet in a Fathom? 3) What is the capital city of Peru? I look forward to catching up with you at the next Sydney meeting on 25 March 2020 Happy Motorcycling……….David. -4-
CLASSIC CLATTER – MARCH 2020 The editor’s bit Bruce and I both received scam emails similar to the one referenced by Alan Harper in his column. The one addressed to the clatter editor email address purported to be from David deLapp and the message was: “Hello Allan, Are you available to do a transfer? Get back to me so I can send you the details for payment. David deLapp”. The email address was presidentemail866@gmail.com. These are called phishing scams – throw out a line and see if you get a nibble. The emails generally seem ‘off’ in content but as Alan suggests checking the email address usually will show the receiver if the sender is real or not. As Sergeant Esterhaus exhorted “Let’s be careful out there”. Bruce’s Bit An enjoyable weekend at the Orange Rally, a bit of rain for the ride up and back from the coast but as usual good weather, company and organisation. An unfortunate spill by one of our members on the way back when some storm washed gravel mid corner caught him out, but fortunately he was able to knock most of the speed off before running out of road and landing in the muddy side drain. Thankfully minimal damage to man and machine, nothing a bit of rest and repair won’t fix. A passer-by who lived just up the road near Bungonia returned with a trailer and the bike was secured in his shed pending rescue the next day – the generosity and helpful nature of most people is still there. Made up for the actions of the low life who rifled through any bags/panniers on the bikes left in the carpark at the Canobolas Hotel on Friday night (presumably looking for money only as they left the contents scattered around the parking area). The closing date for submissions for the next edition is Friday 13 March 2020. Don’t forget, for contributions: - Microsoft Word format wherever possible - For photos, include location, event or ride and full names of members if you want them included in the description. Dave’s Diary No. 18 - Girling Springs While rummaging through a box of assorted springs for a suitable set to fit my 1958 AJS rebuild, I was faced with a variety of spring lengths and ratings. Girling shock absorbers were fitted to a variety of Classic bikes so it was a safe bet that the odd springs I had collected from swap meets would suit my needs, as long as I could find a matched pair. For Girlings, a system of colour markings for the identification of suspension springs has been derived and it consists of three splashes of paint applied to the coils of the springs in the manner shown in the illustra- tion. The colour combination together with the list below, provides the key to the part number and spring rate. The two outer colours are the same and called the ‘primary’ colour. All the springs listed are for the adjustable unit (B type). Lengths and loads are at extended centres. A range of Chrome springs are available in certain sizes and are listed directly under the black equivalent spring and marked thus † EG: 1958 AJS solo: 8" long red/pink/red. Side car : 8.2" long blue /yellow/blue. -6-
Occasional Comments Renewals, have you renewed for 2020? Every year I get one or 2 puzzles, this year I got an envelope, partly addressed but unsealed and with nothing inside. Is it your renewal, is your paperwork still sitting on your table? First ride for the North West Sydney area was 12th January, had 4 starters for a ride up to Colo Heights, partly to see what damage had been caused by the recent fires. It was fairly devastated where the fires had gone through but further up than I had expected, the Putty road was open and there were loads of riders in both directions. Met up with the usual group at the servo at Colo heights, before heading back down to the café for a brunch, tried the waffles and fruit this time, too much of a good thing. Scammers impersonating others, I recently had a scam email supposedly from our president, but as it was a strange request to correspond on a personal matter, I checked the sender's email address and it was not the one I associate with David De Lapp, but another made up to look like it might be genuine. So please be careful and don't get scammed, if someone sends you an odd email, check the sender's email address and if still concerned, contact the real person by your usual means ie by using their normal email address or by phone. In the shed is a new addition being brought back after many years of sleep. It is a Moto Guzzi Lemans 111, a replacement for the one I sold many years ago and have regretted ever since. It is a recent Japanese import which looks like it had been unused since around 2009, it has the usual issues of corrosion and deterioration of rubber parts. It was covered in some sort of oily substance which helped a bit, but it didn't stop all the corrosion. It must have the ugliest 2 into 1 exhaust, which will have to be replaced at some stage. First up was a good wash and it started to look a bit better. Next up, fresh oil for the gearbox and diff were simple, but the engine oil and filter replacement is a bit of a chore as the exhaust had to come off to be able to remove the 14 screws on the sump to get to the oil filter. Having to remove the sump is in some ways a good thing as you get to clean out all the accumulated sludge in the sump when changing the filter. While it was off the exhaust received a repaint and polish of the muffler, it's looking a bit better. The carbies of course needed to be completely pulled down and cleaned, a fairly simple task on a Guzzi as they are stuck out in the breeze. A good clean, some polishing and plating a couple of the screws had these looking better as well as new filter pods. A check and clean of the points (yes it still has points) and check on the timing was fairly simple too. A new set of tyres and new wheel bearings for the front wheel had it more roadworthy. I got a bit carried away and gave the bike a polish, before attacking the biggest problem of it not wanting to start reliably, it would just click at the starter relay most of the time. Google was a big help here with the Guzzi Riders Forum providing the answer, it was a common fault and they had a fix involving running a wire direct from the battery to the starter relay. Next step was to replace the brake fluid, a messy and time consuming task if you are doing it on your own. Up soon is checking to valve clearances, simple on a Guzzi as they are out in the breeze. To be continued……… Rain glorious, continuous pelting rain caused the Feb ride in the north on 9/2/20 to be cancelled. Digital projector required for future viewings at meetings Library/Technical: List of books in stock available for viewing. Allan related a story of a new bike not running quite right, owner replaced factory carbie jets with leaner ones with a subsequent engine seizure occurring. Strangely, the warranty claim was rejected. A Matchless is currently under investigation for a non-starting issue, so no real news there... Regalia: Ray Gosling can provide. Any Illawarra Brach members who want to become the local OIC regalia talk to your nearest president. Events: Sunday 19 January: Goulburn Swap meet. Numbers seemed down on previous years, mixed bag of seller/buyer success from those who attended. **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club website.** Rides: Two Stroke Tuesday: Tuesday 28th. Ride went to Port Kembla Pool Café after leaving the Wollongong Lighthouse meeting point. Seventeen members went for the ride with nine on Two Strokes. Euro two strokes outnumbered Japanese two strokes for the first time, with three Bultacos, one Jawa and an Izh Planeta overwhelming two Suzukis and two Yamahas! Dam Ride: Wednesday 15th January. Ride went to Woronora River Park. Circuitous route as always. Up Keira, Link Road to Highway, Bald Hill thence through nasho to Waterfall, Illawarra Hwy then the famous BBQ with return along old highway with a wayward Goanna causing Brian a “bejezzus” moment along the way. Coffee Ride: Monday 20th January. This ride destination was to Shellharbour Harbour. Fifteen members met and enjoyed a catch-up at a local café. Good to see members travelling some distance to attend and riding their historic registered bikes. The bikes attracted the attention of visiting Canadian and American tourists who remarked they were also part of the classic bike scene back home. The group also had a discussion with a patrolling motorcycle highway patrol officer and we were able to inspect up close the Police Yamaha FJR1300. The officer was also able to inspect a club BSA which had “broken down” in a No Standing zone. - 14 -

A very select group of two members met under dubious skies at Mt Keira and rode to Thirlmere meeting another select group of two returning from an Indian Rally that had been held in Goulburn. Had an enjoyable brunch and returned home via the fire affected areas of Buxton and Balmoral. Seems that “If you buy an Amal you will have problems”. Poor metals used in construction causing body and flange distortion, worn slides...Many problems can be solved by fitting Mikuni carbs, but they are more complex to set up. THE VICE REPORT Not having written on the subject of Panther for a few months, I know you are all champing at the bit for some Panther news. Who am I to deny you all? I am still working on the beyond-epic trans Sahara Panther trip in 1934. Condensing a whole book into a few paragraphs isn't easy, especially trying to convey the incredible difficulties these two young English women endured. I have mentioned Kiwi Panther owner Des Molloy in these pages before. I have only met Des a handful of times, usually at our Oz Panther rallies, but he is probably the most remarkable person I have ever met. He is one of those rare creatures born with an unquenchable thirst for adventure, and exploring this remarkable planet of ours. Des has shared virtually all these adventures with Penelope, his 1965 650cc M120 Panther. Having achieved his three score and ten years, this thirst for adventure hasn't abated. Des' business card simply reads “raconteur”. He certainly tells a great story. You may or may not have heard of or read “The Last Hurrah”, Des' 2005 account of his, his son Steve, and Kiwi mate Dick Huurdeman's epic trip on Penelope and a 600cc Norton single, from Beijing to The Netherlands, no backup, no support, just three blokes on two old British bangers. Well worth looking for. Last year's Oz Panther rally was based at Jo and David Dickie's place in SW Sydney. Des and his wife Steph had just ridden up from Adelaide on Penelope, the last leg of Des' round Australia odyssey, began about a year and a half ago. Real “Boy's Own” stuff. At the rally, Des made the international launch of his latest book, No One Said It would Be Easy, his account of his mid 1970s trip from New Orleans to Buenos Aries on Penelope, accompanied by his brother Roly on Samantha, another late model 650cc Panther, and an Aussie mate, Lawrie, on a pre-war Empire Star BSA called Bessie. This amazing adventure had its gestation in London, but began in New Orleans, down through Mexico, Central America, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay and Argentina. There were far too many hardships to mention here, but think breakdowns, thieves, deserts, trying to breathe at 16,000 foot altitude in the Andes (and keep the bikes running), lack of water, extreme fatigue, and you get my drift. Things that we mere mortals can only begin to imagine. I do recommend that you read this book. Contact Des direct on desmolloy@gmail.com The accompanying photo needs no explanation. Des has photos of himself and Penelope with backdrops of Lake Titicaca, the Great Wall of China, and other such notable places on the planet. I have a guest speaker lined up for the February Sydney meeting. John Horne is a local historian and will speak on the airports and aviation history of western Sydney. Please make the effort to come along and support our guest speakers and your club. Yours in Vice, David Lewis. - 19 -
