Noises from the Big End. Bearing in mind we are one of the few countries actually emerging from the grip of the global pandemic, it doesn’t surprise me that a normal calendar of events is starting to return to the club. It seems our members are chomping at the bit and eagerly looking to the next ride event. To this end I congratulate Ian Wood, Ray Gosling, Barry Newell, Barbara Poole and Peter Wolfenden for forming a rally committee to revive the Oberon Rally. The rally date has been reserved for the 26th -28th November 2021 at the Jenolan Caravan Park. In order for the rally to be a success, Ian Wood (the rally organiser), is asking that expressions of interest be forwarded to the committee, so we can gauge the number of prospective attendees and to be able to cater for their needs. If there is a favourable response, we will provide more details in subsequent Clatters. It was so good to hear all the positive reports on the Orange Rally and I give many thanks to all the enthusiastic Orange rally committee for running this event under these uncertain and ever changing COVID restrictions. The February Sydney meeting was a hit with members as we were treated to a practical exhibition of 3-D printing, by David Moore. On display were gears, levers, an assembled winch and a Lucas battery box, plus a host of other components, all fabricated on David’s home- made 3-D printer. To top off the evening the quiz was re-introduced with the usual 3 questions (which was not won and therefore will be jackpotted for next month). This was followed up with a round of, stand up, ‘True and False’ questions (also not won). So, the fun will continue next month. With the COVID restrictions being eased, it appears there is little interest in continuing with the Zoom meetings, except for committee meetings or by request. As we have the technology, I am happy to use it for monthly/ general meeting, but will require all recipients to send me a request at least 3 days in advance. See if you can guess the correct answers to last month’s Quiz. Q1: What do the abbreviated letters of the AKD motorcycle stand for? Q2: What do the abbreviated letters of the BAT motorcycle stand for? Q3: What was the bike that derived its name from a belt driven inclined pulley and used engines supplied by the Stevens brothers in Wolverhampton C.1911-1924 Answers are listed in this Clatter. Occasional Comments With the Club receiving a grant for Motorcycling NSW last year I have been able to update the Club Membership computer and have transferred the data to the new laptop. But I see we still have a bundle of 45 members who have not yet renewed. Please if you have not got your 2021 membership card check with me as to why, you may not have paid, your renewal may have gone astray or yours might be one of a couple of payments that I cannot identify as there is no reference of the direct payment. A run to Kulnura finally went ahead on 28/2/21 after several tries in 2020 were thwarted by foul weather. Despite the excellent weather it was poorly attended with just Chris O'Carroll and myself turning up for the start, I thought I would try to navigate a different route out to Galston Gorge, but succeeded only in getting us a bit lost in the new developments around Kellyville. Its been several years since I went through this area and all the reference points have been erased by the developments. Eventually we reached a road familiar to Chris and we made our way back on to familiar ground. We took the route through Galston Gorge and on to a stop at Pie in the Sky at Brooklyn. Chris had other duties for the day and had to turn back there and I headed on the Old Pacific highway through Mt White, Peats Ridge and Mangrove and on to Jerry's Café at Kulnura. I met up with Tony McGeorge who had moved from Sydney to Bonnells Bay and was happy to have a chance to meet other members. He was somewhat disappointed when he realised it was only me on the run. As always tlenty of Police patrolling the Old Pacific highway and I think I spotted on of the now unmarked speed cameras. They must have a field day everyday there with large parts of the road limited to 60kph for no apparent reason. After a lunch break and talk with Tony, it was time to head back home. I took the route back through Spencer and Wiseman's Ferry which seemed to have a lot less Police attention. In the shed there has not been a lot happening, with Alex's Honda MVX250 still occupying the workbench, it's just been maintenance like oil changes and adjustments on a couple of bikes and replacement of a broken tacho cable on the Moto Guzzi which occurred on the Orange Rally. The Guzzi also got some new jets as I had a slight mismatch of pilot jets and wanted to try bigger main jets to see if it revs a bit better at full throttle. The tacho cable was a real pain as I had to remove horns and fairing pieces to get at it and be a contortionist to reach the cable ends. Peter Boros thankfully made up a replacement cable inner for me from a longer old cable, I could find some inner cables on line in the Netherlands for a bit under $5, but with a freight cost of $60 that was never an option. While the cable was difficult to get to, nothing could be simpler than changing the carby jets with the carbs stuck out in the breeze and only a single nut holding the float bowl. I am looking forward to attending some swap meets in the near future as there are a few now being advertised, first up for me is Wellington, which has turned into a bit of a road trip with a fellow in Dubbo having some Triumph parts I am interested in and my wife has friends a bit further North it seems like a good time to make a trip out of it. Let's hope with the vaccination program now underway life can get a bit closer to what we all had before. Alan Harper KEY BATTERY SERVICE PTY LTD. VICE REPORT THE VENTURE – LONDON TO CAPE TOWN BY PANTHER 1934/35. In Salah to Tamanrhasset, traversing the Hoggar Massif. It had been almost one month since our intrepid travellers had left London. At the entrance to the In Salah oasis and wireless outpost, the duo once again found themselves stuck in the deep sand, unable to move. A number of French Foreign Legion soldiers (who were stationed at each of these outposts to maintain wireless communication and law and order across the vast Sahara Desert) sprang into action to help them into the compound. The Foreign Legion Captain welcomed them and invited them to stay in the traveller's rest hut. Theresa and Florence spent three days in In Salah. In her notes, Theresa describes the markets at In Salah. Being very aware of the need not to have anything that wasn't absolutely necessary for the trip, they had to forgo such items as a beautiful Tuareg Cross souvenir made from a large five franc coin. Nothing but the absolute essentials for the next leg of the journey. They did buy a piece of muslin to keep the flies off their food. Theresa described the nomadic lifestyles of the Tuareg and Arab people. She describes very long camel caravan trains, the method almost everything needed for human existence in the desert was transported, from one oasis to the next, mostly travelling in the cool of night. She identifies with the Tuareg people in terms of them sharing a wandering existence, with no fixed abode. Theresa says that her chosen lifestyle of adventures is preferable to “the life of Riley”, but compromises had to be made, in terms of what the could and couldn't take with them. Before leaving In Salah, the Foreign Legion Captain, as his colleagues in the previous oases had done, tried to convince Theresa and Florence not to go on. And, as usual they had to persuade him to let them. In the cool of the night on January 7th 1935, they headed south. A few hours after they had left In Salah, the Captain sent two Legionnaires in a desert truck to find out if they should intervene before it was too late. After about twenty miles, the Legionnaires found Theresa and Florence stuck in deep sand, again! They helped push them out, then bid “Adieu” and headed back to In Salah. Many times over the next 250 miles to Arak, they had to lighten the load to enable the Panther outfit and trailer to traverse the sand to reach solid ground, then walk back to pick up the things they had to unload. Theresa describes how the night skyline is used by the Tuareg guides to navigate. She refers to “star dunes” as firm ridges of rock and sand that serve as dependable landmarks. A Legionnaire in In Salah had sketched a diagram of the outline of star dunes to look out for. She relates how Tuareg guides read the sand like mariners read the oceans, and call the desert the “sea without water” and camels the “ships of the desert”. They started ascending towards the Hoggar Massif. They and the Panther were dwarfed as they rode up through the Gorge d'Arak. About half way up, they were caught up by they Legionnaires who had seen them safely out of In Salah, with some welcome food supplies. To be continued............. David Lewis. QUIZ ANSWERS A1: AKD: Abingdon King Duck A2: BAT: Best After Test A3: CLYNO: was the bike that derived its name from a belt driven inclined pulley and used engines by the Stevens brothers in Wolverhampton C.1911-1924 Clyno was founded in 1909 by the cousins Frank and Alwyn Smith. The company took its name for the pulley designed for belt-driven machines which was known as the "inclined pully", becoming abbreviated to the "clined" and then Clyno. The cousins' original workshop was in their hometown of Thrapston, Northamptonshire. In 1910 the opportunity arose for Clyno to purchase a factory in Wolverhampton. The factory belonged to the Stevens Brothers who had supplied engines to Clyno previously. The building purchase by Clyno was completed on 15 October 1910 and the company transferred from Thrapston to Wolverhampton. The company exhibited for the first time at the 1910 motorcycle show at Olympia, displaying motorcycles, adjustable pulleys and telescopic stands. As with many manufacturers, the First World War was a time of prosperity for Clyno. Together with Vickers they created a motorcycle with machine gun attachment, which was produced in large numbers. The choice of Clyno over its competitors as supplier of the standard motorcycle combination outfit for the Motor Machine Gun Service was made in 1915, and is said to have been a decision taken by Winston Churchill. After the war, the motorcycle industry collapsed and Clyno's Works Manager Henry Meadows departed the company to found his own. A large number of cheap motor cycles no longer needed by the army were sold, undercutting the prices of Clyno's machines. There was also a shortage of materials with which to produce new models and to compound Clyno's problems the Russians failed to pay for the motorcycles they received during the war which led to the withdrawal of financial backing. In 1920 the Clyno Engineering Company went into liquidation - 13 -

Orange Rally 2021- and now for something completely different A rally in these Covid-19 times is no mean feat and plenty of us were very grateful for the time and effort put into organizing the 2021 Orange Rally. It was a brave decision to attempt to plan and run a rally given the frequency of the lockdowns and border closures during the time they were planning the rally. Would it go ahead or be knocked out by another breakout of Covid-19. The no frills nature meant planning would have been simplified, but the stress must have been huge so thank you all who organized the event and it was great to see the number of riders who supported the event. This year I had my son riding out to the rally with me, so we chose bikes that would do the run without problems, me on my Moto Guzzi LeMans 111 and Alex on his Ducati 1000DS. We had arranged to ride out with other Sydney members, Chris O'Carroll and Enid, Mark Jolly, Ian Wood, Barry Newell and were joined by Karl and Sue, friends of Chris and Enid. The appointed meeting time came and went but there was a bit of a hiccup for Chris and Enid as they called to say the new Triumph they were riding would not start after filling up. But thankfully Chris found the issue as being too much fuel in the tank preventing the fuel injectors working correctly. With the tank lid left partly open they were able to start it and join us for the ride. Our ride was over the bridge at Windsor, out through the grass farms and on to Bells Line of Road at Kurmond. There were plenty of road works to contend with and some slow traffic so it was a relief to have a stop at Lithgow Workmans Club for lunch a nice break and welcomed by a couple of us, me with knee issues and Barry Newell with back problems. It was then on to Bathurst via the highway, Barry suggested a lap of the Mount Panorama circuit was in order and we all decided that was a good idea, but kept it slow as the police are always on the lookout on the mountain. It was then on to Orange where we went our separate ways to our accommodation. The rain that had been predicted arrived spot on time but not before we were able to move our gear into our lodgings. When I tried to book accommodation, it was becoming scarce with all the cabins in caravan parks being full, but I did score a 3 bedroom house. The rain continued overnight and it was no better on Saturday morning, as the time to leave for the scout camp approached some of the other rallygoers were trying to start their bikes while others had abandoned hope of a morning ride. Ray headed off in his car to see if the rally was a go and came back soon with news that the ride was still on. So we donned our wet weather gear and headed for the meeting point at the Scout Camp to sign on and get ride instructions. The rally entry board showed 95 registered, but there were probably closer to 70 at the start. As we waited for the start rain pelted down but largely stopped by the delayed start. Split into 3 groups to allow for each group to stop for morning tea in a different town, Alex and I were in the first group of 20 bikes and made our way off, but not far into the ride encountered some heavy fog which along with the light rain made riding interesting. Before we reached the morning tea stop at Canowindra the rain had stopped and we all removed our wet weather gear as it looked like the rain was gone for the day. The run to Molong for lunch was through some beautiful country now awakened by good recent rains, with dams full, paddocks lush and brimming with livestock. So good to see the country in good condition after the years of drought. Following lunch it was another short ride through glorious country back to Orange. There was no official presentation dinner, however the Orange crew put on a barbeque we attended with around 40 others. Plenty of conversation to be had but without the presentation it was all over early. Sunday dawned bright, cool and clear and we packed up our gear and loaded our bikes before meeting up at the Bunnings carpark for the Sunday ride, always a smaller group for the Sunday ride we toured through more beautiful country before a stop at Lucknow for refreshments and to say goodbyes. After a break Alex, Mark and myself headed back toward home. A break at Lithgow for a coffee and then another for petrol at Bilpin before heading back into greater Sydney and home satisfied with a weekend well spent with friends. Again I would like to thank Rick Kent and his crew for once again organising a great rally in difficult conditions and look forward to an even better Rally next year in hopefully easier circumstances. Orange COVID Safe Rally 13-14 March 2021 It was to be the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Orange Branch of the CEMCC…..until COVID! The Rally committee spent a lot of time deliberating, finally deciding to defer the grand celebrations for the 40 th until 2022 and to run a very modified COVID Safe Rally, which met NSW Govt and local Council requirements. This consisted splitting into three groups of riders, each taking different 200km routes on Saturday, with travelling marshals in each group to mark critical corners as well as acting as COVID marshals in the various cafes where we had morning tea and lunch. The normal catering by schools was abandoned due to COVID. About 90 entries, some from as far as Victoria were received and true to form, Orange gave us the best and worst of its weather! Rain and heavy fog on Saturday reduced the actual numbers to around 60 keen riders and resulted in a late start. Three routes were used, one via Molong, Cumnock, Canowindra; another via Cudal, Long’s Corner to Canowindra and Molong and the third via Cargo, Canowindra to Gulgong and return. Later in the morning as we headed west from Orange, the rain and fog lifted giving us a great day for riding. Fifty riders returned to the Scout Camp Saturday night for a fine social occasion with gourmet hamburgers and light desert, supplemented by the occasional drink or two. Sunday saw the best of our weather, bright sunlit skies, with about 50 riders joining the short 1 hour ride meandering around Millthorpe then back to Lucknow for morning tea. Our thanks to all participants – it was great to have the opportunity to meet up with friends again and also to all who helped make a very successful rally under difficult circumstances. We are looking forward to seeing you at our 40th Rally celebrations next February! It will be an event to remember! - David Scott A very wet start to the COVID Safe Rally! – Photo courtesy of Old Bike Magazine – see the latest edition for Rally article. - 22 -
