A NOTE FROM TERRY At our July WVRC meeting, it was discussed, at length by Agnes Field and the Committee, the fact that malicious gossip in the Village was affecting certain residents more than others. My take on this, (no excuse), is that people of a certain age and living In each other’s pockets, not having a great deal to keep themselves busy, will form close relationships with those of a like mind, who will talk (gossip). Although this is not acceptable, it happens! We all live a decent comfortable life in a delightful village and we all need our neighbours and friends, although we may not be aware of the upset caused. It can take ‘two to tango’ unless you can’t say anything nice, don’t rock the boat by upsetting the more vulnerable Villagers. Terry Pottinger (Chairman WVRC) P.S. Hope you are all enjoying the hot summer. Everyone who attends the Monday afternoon exercise classes run by Lizzy from Hobbs will agree that not only are the exercises good for us but that we have fun at the same time. Lizzy has proved to be the perfect match for us all, her gentle caring approach has made going to her classes an absolute pleasure, so everyone was delighted for her, and husband Ben, when she announced she would be off on maternity leave in July. Everyone contributed to giving her a send-off present for the expected arrival. Not knowing if the little one was a girl or boy we had great fun selecting lemon and white items which we surprised her with on her final day. Good luck Lizzy, be sure to bring your little bundle to visit us, we will miss you. Gail Waterworth August 2018 June 2017 5
TOPICS OF INTEREST ROY HONE CELEBRATES HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY! Roy has been a Resident of the Village since 2001. His involvement as a volunteer has been a long and dedicated one. He was Vice Chair and Chairman of the WVRC for a period of 8 years. For many years he was the social organiser for many functions especially the dinner/dances. Roy was Captain of the Bowling Club and still plays a very active role as a committee member of the Golf Club and score keeper at Quiz Night. Roy was born in Acton W3 and attended school at Strand on the Green, although he maintains his real education only started when he signed up at the age of 18 with the RAF, and was trained as an engineer. When he left the RAF he started his own engineering company. He then married and went into the retail trade. Roy retained his ties with the RAF, as a Director at their headquarters in Chiswick. This year is the celebration of the RAF and a tribute to this was a display in London. We were very lucky to observe some of the aircraft that flew over the Village involved in this event. The Spitfire is Roy's favourite. Many Happy Returns Roy. Mary Chapman 6 www.whiteleyvillage.org.uk

SOMETIMES I DOUBT Sometimes, I have doubts about my faith. Unfortunately, the doubts do not bring me an inner peace. When the feast day of St Thomas the Apostle came in July, I had a look at them. “Doubting Thomas” we call him, but are we missing the point? A week before appearing to Thomas, Jesus had appeared to His other dear, terrified Apostles. The first thing that Jesus did was to show them His hands and His side, the marks of His cruel crucifixion. Why? Why the need to show them his wounds? Jesus dearly loved His friends. He understood their doubts and need for proof. But His dear Thomas, the one who had witnessed Jesus’ raising of Lazarus from the dead, was missing. When the Apostles arrived so full of joy to tell him the Good News, Thomas was unable to believe them. People don’t come alive again after they die. So he says, “Unless I see for myself the holes that the nails made in his hands and put my finger into those holes…..” (Jn. 20:24-28) ELMBRIDGE And so Jesus returns to search him out personally, as He does each one of us HEALTHY WALKS when we doubt. He invites His friend to touch His wounds. We will never know Thurs 2 August 11-12.15 whether Thomas actually touched Jesus. Karen All we know is he was healed of his Sun 19 August 11-12.15 doubts and declared, “My Lord and My Karen God!” Now Thomas is also filled with joy and dashes off to spread the Good News. In fact he dashes off as far as Syria and Mon 10 Sept 10.30-11.30 India where he is eventually killed for his Karen faith. Fri 28 Sept 10.30-11.30 Maybe that is why I like to stay in my Karen doubts. To believe can be costly! Veronic Robbins August 2018 21
