Potentate's Message Today is a Fun Day, a Fun Month, Fun Year to be an Alee Shriner! The 125th Anniversary celebration is over, and we are working on the beginning of the next 125 years! The program for the Celebration was unique. We saluted our past leaders with a Grand Salaam as only Alee can. There was a flag presentation timeline. Patrol Captain Frank Stephens led the presentation as the Patrol is the first Unit of Alee. He was followed by 50 plus flags placed by Nobles representing every Unit or Club formed at Alee and displayed at the stage. Some Nobles were members of the Unit or Club their flag represented, and others were from the Aides Team. Even a few Past Potenatees got in on the fun. Tip of the FEZ to the Aides Team as they worked hard getting the presentation organized, and thanks to Lady Colleen for all the hours she put in designing all the flags. Special thanks to CR Steve Lingle, AR Robbie Moore, Lady Colleen, for the above and beyond dedication in the 2021 Alee Scimitar Sportsman Auction Banquet. Many hands put the event on from the best decorating team, to the best Aides Team, best Nobles and Ladies, best Units and Clubs, our Auctioneer and the best Divan of THE BEST SHRINE TEMPLE. THANK YOU SO VERY much for giving this a chance. This month many will journey to Myrtle Beach for SASA (South Atlantic Shrine Association) for FUN and FELLOWSHIP with Nobles and Ladies from at least 20 other temples. I am looking forward to the FUN and Fellowship this event ALWAYS brings. Thank you so very much to all that came out to help tune up the Haunted House on August 28, many hands made light work and the payoff will be the most awesome Haunt ever. Plans are also underway for the Alee Circus in November. Circus meeting September 12. Need donations and Program Sponsors to make it a success. We eliminated the 3rd party marketing effort and are mailing requests. Alee didn’t make it 125 years with a few Nobles. It made it because MANY Nobles and Ladies stepped up as a TEAM. Remember your Blue Lodge (Get those petitions in for Fall Ceremonial), your Rites and our Shrine Patients and their families. Illustrious Potentate Freddie L. Humphries, Jr First Lady Colleen’s Message I think the writing of this article best describes my thoughts. They are all over the place. I do not want to restate the upcoming calendar of events, but I would like the Nobles and Ladies to know of exciting, fun events. I want my time and use of this space to be impactful and maybe make a difference in someone donating their time, talent, or means. And at the same time, in my head, I am thinking of COVID, the hospital crusade paper, organizing my office, events, circus donations, rentals, cleaning up after rentals, and setting the next one up. Was I thoughtful? Did I thank someone? So with that last statement, I realize I am behind in my thank you notes. Please know I am getting there. We just finished the 125th Celebration – I am so grateful for the opportunity. I learned so many fascinating facts. I find myself talking about them all the time. The journey was impactful to me. It helped create the completed coffee table book I just got back from the printer that will help me raise money for the First Lady’s Project. Thank you to all the Units and Clubs that purchased a page and submitted photos and history. Thanks to all the Nobles and Ladies that are past and present, there would be no book without them. Thanks to Lady Cookie Moore for pictures at events to incorporate into the book. Without the photos we would have no record of our good times. Ill Sir Freddie always talks about FUN, FELLOWSHIP, and MASONIC VALUES. How does that affect the ladies? I hope all events are fun. When I plan an event, I look at whether people will leave with good memories and a good time, and were they glad they came? I think for ladies, we appreciate our Noble so much more because he has those Masonic Values. A step above the next fellow. Fellowship for ladies is just friendship. More importantly you find those ladies that make it fun, make you laugh until you cry and enjoy life. I hope we all rise to that opportunity and remember why we are here… for the children, our Nobles, and Alee. Lady Colleen Humphries 125th Anniversary - Divan looking good! Our Potentate and his family all smiles! Celebrating the Past t Making A Difference That Will Last Page 9

News from Shriners International introducing the Patient Ambassadors and First Lady Debby’s Project Reprinted from Shriners Village www.shrinersvillage.com Patient with arthrogryposis finds hope at the Greenville Shriners Hospital Mikenli’s Story 4-year-old patient Mikenli has never been one to back down from a challenge. In fact, she’s “unstoppable,” said Mikenli’s mom Shanntel. Born with AMC, Mikenli’s family was told the spunky little girl would never use her arms or walk. But then, they met Dr. Hyer and everything changed. According to the doctor who delivered her, Shriners Hospitals for Children patient Mikenli was never supposed to walk – or use her arms. But even at just 4, you can tell she’s never been one to let another person’s opinion keep her from accomplishing anything. Born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), a number of rare muscle disorders that can cause stiff joints and abnormal muscle development, Mikenli has a limited range of motion that could have prevented her from walking. But thanks to the expertise of Laurn Hyer, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at the Greenville Shriners Hospital, the support of her family and her own tenacious disposition, that’s not the case. “Coming to Shriners was the best move we’ve ever made,” explained Mikenli’s mom, Shanntel. Even so, the journey to healing hasn’t always been easy. Before Shanntel saw a commercial advertising Shriners Hospitals for Children and realized there was a hospital with dedicated, optimistic caregivers specializing in pediatric orthopedic care just three hours away from her front door, Mikenli struggled through surgery after surgery. During two of them, she had to be resuscitated But, because “Mikenli is a fighter,” she always pulled through, explained Shanntel, and finally, met a “Godsend” – Dr. Hyer. “Mikenli wouldn’t be where she is today without the help of the team at Shriners in Greenville,” Shanntel gushed. From working with occupational therapists who specialize in helping children with AMC perform daily activities like buttoning a shirt or eating cereal, to undergoing surgery to improve her range of motion, Mikenli has spent hours working to overcome challenges and meet her goals. And it shows. With her twin sister by her side, “Mikenli is unstoppable.” She loves to dance and do gymnastics. And this summer, her first summer without any casts, she plans to spend most of her time in the pool, proving just how far AMC kids can go when they have the “most amazing care anywhere.” Provided by Shriners Hospital for Childtren - Greenville Page 12 Fun, Fellowship and Masonic Values
