CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 2019-2020 ALL DAY NURSERY (0-2) In the nursery we enjoy free play and settling in during the first hour of the day. Second hour we have snack and depending on who is there and what the weather is like we spend time outside or continue inside play and/or music time. Third and Fourth hour is naptime. We enjoy puzzles, coloring and other quiet activities as they awaken. I am willing to teach the Kindermusik 0-2 yr old Sing & Play curriculum with your children if you wish. This would include an additional supply fee of $30 for the At Home Component of this program. Let me know if this is an option that you are interested in. I do ask that all parents of children in the nursery bring a supply of diapers (10-15) and a change of clothes for each child. These items will be in kept at GOCO so that we have all changing items in one location. Everything else that the child needs is provided. SERVICE HOUR (12-18) Does your teenager need service hours in order to complete a high school transcript or a church or scouting commitment? Well then, look no further! Students who sign up for this "class" will have the opportunity to serve in any number of our classrooms, helping our teachers and assisting the students. Teens can meet a potential 11 hours of community service in the fall and 13 hours in the spring. They will receive a certificate of completion at the end of each semester. STUDY HALL (12-18) Responsible students who sign up for this class will have quiet study time to work on assignments brought from home. Officer on Duty will supervise students, but direct supervision may not be available full time. This class required students to be self-motivated and well behaved.
1st HOUR FREE PLAY (3-4) Free Play is what it sounds like- a lot of playing! That's what this age group needs. The children will have plenty of opportunities to play and use their imaginations. We will read fiction and non- fiction books, sing and dance to silly songs, and get creative through art. HUMAN BODY / GOING BUGGY (5-6) This semester-long class will be a journey through our bodies' systems. (If only I knew Ms. Frizzle, hmmmm). Anyway, we will learn about our bodies and what makes them tick. From how our brains, muscles, organs and nerves work, to why we get sick. Yes, we will probably discuss gross things, but hey, it'll be a room of 5&6 year olds, and they love to be gross. A small supply fee may apply. In Going Buggy, we will study entomology (it’s never too early)! This semester, we will learn all about insects, arachnids, and other "buggy" creatures with a multitude of hands on and multi- sensory activities. Encountering real specimens is always a possibility here. Be prepared for your kids to know words that you DON'T know! How's that, for starters? AROUND THE WORLD (5-6) The mission of this class is to foster in the students a passion for God's people and creation around the world. We will mentor them as they discover culture, animals and geography continent by continent. The class is completely hands-on, with games, puzzles, role-play, and lots of tasting, touching and feeling. Expect many opportunities for extra credit with home-projects. Plan on dressing warmly when we study Antarctica! PE (7-12) This will be a time to get our bodies in motion and develop team work. We will play games, sports, stretching, exercises and more. The class will adapt to the ability and activity preferences of the kids that sign up for the class. FELLOWSHIP OF THE WORMS (7-9) Calling all book worms!! This class will focus on reading great books, exploring new genres and authors and gaining an appreciation for the classics. Students will have the chance to choose from a master book list (with parent approval) and book clubs will rotate throughout the year. Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters at home. While in class we will have fun digging deeper into our selections using a variety of methods, including lively book discussions (with snacks!), drama, art and music and film. EARTH SCIENCE ( 9-13) This year, we will dig deep into geology and weather, giving each a full semester of study. In geology/earth, we'll uncover earth's structure and study tectonics, which will involve a focus on volcanoes and earthquakes. Next, we will learn to identify and classify a variety of rocks and minerals and discuss the rock cycle and types of formations. We may do a short study on weathering and erosion, too. Lastly, we will absorb ourselves with water! ...waterways, glaciers and caves, rivers, lakes, and oceans, and currents and tides.
I cannot wait for us to turn our eyes to the skies and become experts in the weather. We'll learn all about the atmosphere, its layers, the one-way water cycle, and air currents. We'll discuss earth's orientation and its effects on the seasons. Clouds are next, then we will discuss weather systems and finish of the year with a bang with a study in storms and weather events. This class will require reading and notetaking. We will likely do some projects which will require some focus at home. I want this class to be high in the hands-on side, so students will need to keep up with assigned reading and vocabulary. Class caps at 15. Repeat students will go on a waiting list until registration is over (students need to be true freshmen if possible). There may be a supply fee. PRAISE KIDS (9-18) Get ready to have fun and move around while Praising the Lord all at once! We will work on learning new contemporary worship songs. Vocal training is provided, if you have a desire to want to sing. We help lead worship, go visit nursing homes, go caroling, and do various outreaches to help bring Jesus to peoples’ hearts and smiles to their faces. IEW LEMONADE TO LEADERSHIP (11-14) GOAL: Obtain the knowledge and confidence to create and manage their own business. By the end of this class, they should have already started to launch their business or be ready to launch. This curriculum will get students involved in the real world of business as rapidly as possible, so the natural rewards of earning money become a built-in incentive for a more in-depth study of business and entrepreneurship. The students will learn to: -Recognize money-making opportunities -Estimate start-up costs and operating expenses -Write a real business plan -Set up a record-keeping system -Design marketing materials and ads -Deliver a sales presentation/business pitch -Become a job-maker instead of a job-taker -Start and operate a youth-owned business -Take charge of the future STRATEGY GAMES (12+) Strategy games will teach strategy and critical thinking, while focusing on patience, sportsmanship and teamwork. Class will include classic 2-player games such as backgammon and mancala, cooperative games, larger group games such as risk, and card games. The class will also feature free-play weeks and/or student choice weeks. Format will be to have students help critique each other on their strategy and give suggestions on how to improve. Students will play some weeks and critique some weeks. $5 supply fee. Class size limited to 12. CHEMISTRY LAB (14+)
My chemistry student will be using Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Wile and I will pull labs from that book for the co-op lab class. Using another Chemistry curriculum is fine; generally, I will be giving enough information for students to understand the lab even if they have not reached that point in their home studies. I will expect serious lab etiquette and thorough lab reports (as homework each week - we will discuss what these look like in class). Chemistry labs require the ability to manipulate equations and solve for variables (including units), so keep that math foundation in mind when registering for this class. There will most likely be a $10-$15 supply fee. 2nd HOUR PE (3-4) In PE, the little ones will have fun, get the wiggles out, and build listening and gross motor skills through movement songs, ball skills, partner activities, and strengthening/body skills (ie: hopping, jumping jacks, crab walks, bear crawls, etc.) And, of course, we will have some of their favorite activity...Playground time! FUN WITH FOOD (7-9) A little peer pressure can be good if it means trying new and healthy foods, right? Fun with Food is craft time plus snack time... the best of both worlds! Yogurt parfaits, tasty dips, popsicles and sour cream finger paints are just a few of the activities planned. This interactive class will focus on hygiene, food creativity, healthy snacking and cleanup. No knives or heat will be used by students. Allergies can definitely be accommodated but the class will probably be using a variety
of common foods, including wheat, dairy and nuts, so highly sensitive children may not want to join. (A supply fee may be added in Spring semester if needed) KINGDOM CODE (7+) GOAL: Obtain knowledge and confidence to create and manage their own business. By the end of this class, they should have already started to launch their business or be ready to launch. This course not only teaches about becoming an entrepreneur it is heavy into money management to the glory of God. Every part of this curriculum is centered around why God wants us to have a great work ethic, sound budgeting skills, and organized plans. Through the course of the year, we will brainstorm viable service based and goods-based businesses each kid is able and interested in creating. We will walk through the process of vetting each idea (through mentorships, discussions, and neighborhood surveys). Our kids will learn how to build a business plan and all the steps to planning and starting their own business. FELLOWSHIP OF THE WORMS (9-12) Calling all book worms!! LEGOS: BIBLICAL STRUCTURES (9-13) I can’t wait to build Noah’s Ark! And rest assured it will be impressive and accurate. We will learn about and study several of the more instrumental structures recorded in Scripture using descriptions included in the Bible, archaeological and historical research, and even some geography. We may even meet some of the people involved in the important events surrounding these structures. Some reading and a little research may be required at home in order to equip our students and enhance their experience. Each student gets to take a 48x48 baseplate home at the end of the year. Class caps at 12. CAKE DECORATING (10+) Cake decorating is one skill anyone can learn including kids. This class will not only teach your kids to decorate cakes but also to be little entrepreneurs where they can be proud of their creations and make a little something for themselves thus, making them self-sufficient on a smaller scale. Most of all, they will have a blast learning this new skill. CAREER EXPLOARTIONS (12+) The Career explorations class will be geared for students 12 and up. Students will have the option of being assessed for occupations and receiving assessment interpretation. Occupational information concerning their field of choice will also be given as it relates to future prospects for that industry as well as requirements. Professionals will be invited to some class sessions to offer inside views and question and answering for students. The textbook used will be “What Color is your parachute? for teens” Second Edition. It goes for about $4 - $9. No additional cost associated with the class is expected.
SCREENWRITING (14+) This fun class will guide aspiring writers through the process of turning a story into a script. It will cover Aristotle's Poetics and pull from Aaron Sorkin's MasterClass and possibly Great Courses ScreenWriting 101, both adapted to be suitable for this age group. While there will be a structure to the course, the final project and some topics will be open to student choice. There will be homework--watching select movies and television shows (tough!) -- and collaborating to write scripts. The course will culminate in either a pilot for a new tv series or a short movie, hopefully recorded and edited to share with the Co-Op. This class will only work with eager student participation! Parents, please note that this class will be PG-13 due to the nature of the subject. While I will do my best to avoid language and mature subject matter, some scenes used as examples in class may come from movies that you (and I) would not share the entire movie or series yet. These will be used to illustrate specific topics only when no alternatives can be found. Movies recommended for homework will be PG-13 or less and I will note for parents any moments they may want to censor. It's my intention to keep this to a minimum, but it is really difficult to cover this subject without this caveat! 0.5 high school elective credit. There may be a $10 supply fee for the first semester. 3rd HOUR FUN LAB (3-4) Discovery centers, messy play, and age appropriate games. Children will also learn vocabulary and songs in foreign languages. PE (5-6) Stretches, exercising, and playing games in the gym. If weather permits, playing at the park. WEIRD SCIENCE (7-9) I am so excited for this class!! This class will not follow a written curriculum ( wouldn't be" weird" if we followed a script ;/). We will be conducting hands on science experiments throughout the year. We will make hypotheses, learn new terms, discuss results, and record those results in our journals through drawings and writing. We will cover many areas of science, but most of all, have fun and hopefully make some good messes!! Class caps at 12. PICTURE SMART BIBLE (7-10) We will be using the Picture Smart Bible - New Testament Curriculum for this class. The students will learn the major themes, events, and characters of each book in the New Testament through listening, discussing, drawing and coloring. The overview of each book(s) is illustrated on the page in dotted lines. As each section of illustrations is covered in the overview that is read aloud and discussed as a class, the student will draw (fill in the dotted lined illustration provided) and color the picture. No matter the learning style, this approach will help the key concepts of each book in the New Testament stick in the child's memory. See the attached sheet (posted in the forum) for an example of what the student sheet would look like.
CAT & DOG THEOLOGY (10-14) GOAL: To identify what authentic God-centered faith looks like in our current situations. Determine the action steps of how we can serve Him in concrete and consistent ways. Cat= “You exist to serve me.” Dog= “I exist to serve you.” In a time when our kids are becoming deep individual thinkers, this class will help guide them at how to look at their relationship with God and why they study His word. We will read books from this curriculum (including “I Heard the Good News Today 3”) that will expose our kids to current missionary stories. Throughout the year our focus will be to learn: -How to follow Jesus in our everyday lives. -How to have a DAILY attitude that glorifies God. -How to have quality quiet time with God. -How to study God’s word. -How to lead and serve like Jesus. -How to creatively share our faith. STORY OF THE WORLD: THE MODERN AGE (11-14, 10 by permission) We will be working with Susan Wise Bauer's 4th Story of the World book, called The Modern Age: From Victoria’s Empire to the End of the USSR. Students will be expected to come to class having read (or listened to) 2 chapters each week. In class we will informally review test questions together and reinforce the material with activities, books, maps, games, and songs DYSTOPIAN FUTURE NOVEL BOOK CLUB (12+) I intend this book club to be a relaxed but engaging largely student-led discussion. I love this genre, and I know it appeals to many of our teens! The final book list will depend on the ages of students in the course and prior books read, but would likely include some of the following: Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Giver, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Divergent. I will offer students the ability to vote on some of the books, and will alternate lighter young-adult fiction with heavier English lit classics. The target pace will be one book per month, and students will be expected to come to class ready with questions and eager to discuss. WORLD GEOGRAPHY (14+) Plan on becoming an expert in world geography this year! We will use North Star Geography as a launch pad for all textbook assignments, quizzes and tests. We will also expand on the subject by doing some projects, activities, and other research. This course covers physical, political and cultural (human) geography. 1 high school credit. Class cap at 15. There may be an additional supply fee for this class.
4th HOUR ABC MUSIC AND ME (3-4) In this class we have fun exploring different styles of music and learning about and playing all types of instruments. There is an additional $45 supply fee that covers the cost of the At Home Materials. The At Home Materials are a major component of the Kindermusik Program and are required. I can always tell who is getting the most out of their Kindermusik experience by using their home materials. If you have older children who have previously participated in Kindermusik ABC Music and Me and are able to find all of the components of the AT Home Materials for the units that we will be covering you do not have to repurchase. Thank you. If you have any questions about this please let me (Michelle Naff) know. Here are the units that we will be enjoying: Fall 2017 1. Feel the Music This month we will be learning all about emotions in music. The kids will be using their voices and facial expressions to show a variety of emotions and then will listen for those emotions in music. We will also learn about Ludwig von Bethoven and listen to some music he wrote. We will learn about and explore crescendo (louder) and decrescendo (softer) while listening and moving to sounds from the brass family of instruments. In this month's take Home Kit you will have the chance to explore the movement and emotions of music using the cd and the activities in the Family Guide which also includes the in-class story about Bethoven titled The Duel. Your kit also includes a mini maraca. 2. Jazz Kitchen We are going to have fun this month learning about Jazz music, it's sounds and instrument. The children will also utilize the movement of their bodies to music as we explore different activities of the kitchen and grocery store. We will learn more about the rhythm of the quarter-note and eighth-note. This months Home Kit includes the CD and Family Guide. In the Family Guide there is the recipe for Noodle from Scratch which is the in-class story for this month. 3. Giggles Giggles is definitely the word of the month. This month is all about humor and silliness as we learn silly dances and knock-knock jokes. We will hear and play with some of the instruments found in traditional American folk music. We will also learn about presto (fast) and largo (slow). The Home Kit includes the CD (with a number of knock-knock jokes) a harmonica and the Family Guide. Spring 2018 1. Rhythms of the Land In class we’ll explore the rhythms and sounds of Native American music. As we investigate, compare, and contrast a wide variety of drums and the materials they’re made from, preschoolers develop the investigative vocabulary needed in the sciences. When that same learning pattern is repeated at home through the Home Kit, the children get an early start in
math, too. The Rhythms of the Land Home Kit includes a magazine-style Family Guide, Home CD, and an instrument. 2. Under the Rainbow Keep your eyes open for a summer rain this month. In Under the Rainbow class we will explore the concept of high and low sounds with Irish music, tricky leprechauns, and colors of the rainbow. Match sounds with pictures, and match pictures with the written words to build lasting literacy skills. With more activities sprinkled throughout the mini-literature book in your Home Kit, preschoolers and their families can practice together the skills needed now and later in school. The Home Kit includes a 15 page magazine-style Family Guide, a Home CD. 3. Sing a Story Mozart and math? With exposure to singing and music notation this month, children get more experience with abstract symbols. In class we will explore how abstract thoughts, like music, is shared and communicated with a symbol, such as a musical note. This same abstract thinking process helps children comprehend the idea behind the letters of the alphabet and numbers. The Sing a Story Home Kit includes a magazine-style Family Guide and Home CD. CHARACTER FIRST (5) Using the “Character First Education” curriculum, each week students will learn about a different character trait. Each character trait is associated with a different animal. Crafts, songs, role- playing and games will be incorporated into each class. Students will also memorize the definition for each character trait. Some, but not all of the character traits we will focus on are: honesty, dependability, patience, and obedience. BOOK CLUB (6) This semester we will cover some Curious George stories. During class we will read the stories and then with activities we will help the students realize that a story involves many subjects like math, science, geography, art, history... This is with the purpose of creating curiosity in the students while diving into other stories or subjects. PENMANSHIP I (7+) & PENMANSHIP II (12+) In Penmanship I and II students will master slant print and traditional cursive writing using the Peterson Directed Handwriting program. They will also complete copy work projects from Scripture, great poetry, literature and historical documents. However, should a student already have a curriculum they are working on at home, they are welcome to bring that work with them to class. Students will work in small groups, but independently, as they progress toward personal mastery. Motivation is maintained by use of points and prizes!
Class cap of 16 students for Penmanship I and II combined. ART THROUGH LITERATURE (7-9) In this class, we will mostly be reading the Caldecott Award-winning picture books and completing the art projects suggested by the Art Through Children's Literature curriculum by Debi Englebough. We will also cover a few all-time favorite stories. Each art project will correlate to the topic, characters, or illustration style of the stories read. The students will explore different mediums of art (pencil, paint, watercolors, nature stamping, crayon, mosaic, etc) as they create their masterpieces. This will be a fun, new way to get into a book! A small supply fee may be added later. STEM CHALLENGES (9+) In the STEM Challenge class we will hone our problem solving skills with weekly challenges. Which team’s popsicle stick bridge can hold the most weight? Whose paper airplane can fly the farthest? Lots of building, creating, experimenting and thinking outside the box! With a new project every week or two, students will enjoy some hands on creativity in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. JEWELRYMAKING (9-15) We will explore the creative of different items of textiles and how these skills can transition into creating other crafty items. PE (12+) Stretches, exercising, and doing different sports and strength drills throughout the year for the body and the mind. TEEN CLUB HOUR (12+) This hour will be reserved for teens to develop their own club. Do you have an interest in building, anime, writing, music, or some other area and want the chance to do that together with others in co-op?? Here is the opportunity! All clubs will be supervised by adults. Submit your idea ASAP for placement in a room and we’ll see what we can do!
