            Heathfield Headlines
Message from the Headteacher, Caroline Barlow
This morning, we shared with Year 11 their final assembly before they start their exam series. As well
as important information relating to the process and requirements of the exams, we shared with them
some messages from parties external to the College who count themselves as friends and supporters
of our students.

All the messages encouraged the students to feel confident as they approach the first exams; the
preparation is done, the hard work has been undertaken and they now have the chance to go into the
exam hall to show the examiners quite how well they can do. Under the hashtag
#Heathfieldyouvegotthis students heard from politicians, celebrities and speakers they have met over
the last few years. This was followed by letters from parents, friends or staff to share how proud they
are of the hard work they have put in.

I was especially keen to share with Year 11, as well as some tips on preparing for all the exams and
managing the emotions, the fact that they are a great source of pride to us as a College. They are a
lovely year group with a keen sense of decency and integrity. They are well respected and liked
before they sit their exams and they will be after the exams have finished.

These are qualities that are equally as important to develop as they move forward into the next stage
of their lives. We spend 5-7 years helping our young people grow into confident, healthy, decent
people who will lead successful and positive lives. The exams are a part of that success and assume
importance now but it is important these young people know they are a source of pride every day.

I would especially like to thank those parents who wrote in this week to thank staff efforts in
preparing students for exams and also to mark National Teacher Appreciation Day. We have had some
lovely feedback this week from visitors to the College and also from Year 7 parents evening. Thank
you to all those who take the time and trouble to communicate positively with us, it makes such a
difference.

I would leave you with a quote from one of these which I heartily endorse.

“I wanted to write and thank the staff of Heathfield Community College for all their amazing
hard work. Both my children …..get up every morning with enthusiasm to get to school and to
learn. Thank you to all the staff at the school for teaching and supporting them and helping us
bring up two amazing, well rounded individuals that we are so proud of.”

                                                                   Student Leadership
Head Boy and Head Girl give an insight into the last couple of weeks of College.
As exam dates are looming, Heathfield students have been
preparing themselves for the home stretch in these upcoming
weeks. We also feel immensely grateful for the time our
teachers are giving us during lunchtimes and after school in
order to help us reach our true potential. As Year 7 have had
their Parents Evening and Year 12 have begun their mocks, we
wish everyone the best of luck, particularly our Year 11 peers
 who’ve been working exceptionally hard.

  Students Success In Music
With ESCC plans to close the Music Instrumental Service by 2019 due to a funding shortfall – Y12
student, Myles Hook shares his personal success within music to encourage more people to sign the
  ePetition below.

Myles was selected to join the Pianoman Scholarship scheme 2 years ago after a visit to the school
by its founder Richard Meyrick. Ever since, twice a month, Myles attends lessons with Richard and
his colleagues at the Bluthner Piano Centre in London with the full support of the school.

At the end of March this year, Myles took his ABRSM grade 8 (the highest grade) and he has now
had the results back - a pass with distinction. This is a fantastic result highlighting the amount of
time and dedication Myles puts into his playing as well as the importance of maintaining music
services such as ESCC within schools.

The Duke Of Edinburgh Award at Heathfield CC – 1 Year on…
We celebrated being a Duke of Edinburgh Centre for a
year this month, and what a whirlwind of a 12 months
it has been! Thirteen of our Year 10’s successfully
completed the Bronze Award as part of our pilot
scheme. Ten of these have continued on to the Silver
award as our pilot group testing the feasibility of
running the more advanced and in the long term.

Meanwhile, our new Bronze cohort have been
participating in an extensive training and team
building after-school programme designed to build
confidence in expedition skills they will need in the
Autumn. They are also working hard on their individual
sections independently at home and in the wider
 community with their volunteering work.

On the 22 April, we set off on our first practice walk
as a group of 30 students and 7 staff. Map reading
skills were tested, as were footwear choices and snack
sections! It was a beautiful 8km walk in the spring
sunshine surrounded by the gorgeous flora of our local
countryside. A student report will follow soon. Then
on the 26 April several of our group
participated in a training day down at Cuckmere Haven on the 26 April which we linked into via our
 ESSC partnership.

Thanks should go to our amazing team of Duke of Edinburgh staff volunteers who continue to give
up their time to support the group. As always we are incredibly proud of our students who always
rise to a challenge; show immense determination to achieve this tremendous award.

Next on the agenda - a full day walk; cooking on gas; and testing tent pitching skills.

  Y11 GCSE Away-Day
On Thursday 10 May, 30 students were given an intensive GCSE English Language and maths
 experience.

Students left school at 8:37am and were taken to the lovely surroundings of Wellshurst Golf Club.
They were greeted by a breakfast bap and then promptly set to work. Mr Hatchard and Ms
Dupasquier lead two sessions each on being successful in GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths.

The first session of the day has students practising their algebraic skills followed by a session
focused on how to prove to the examiners that they are able to write well. Tips included using
complex sentences, semi-colons, learning 5 ambitious words and the spelling of them as well as a
mnemonic to help remember key techniques fro writing non-fiction pieces.

After break, students were solving a maths treasure hunt by utilising their ratio skills. The use of
T-tables was emphasised and students knew clearly demonstrated a secure knowledge in the
T-table methodology. Subsequently, students moved back to focusing on English skills, namely
reading. They learnt how to structure their answers using the methods that our GCSE expert talked
 students through earlier this term.

The afternoon then saw students being led through a walking talking mock in both English and
Maths where students were given further advice and guidance but were thoroughly tested in
putting the skills they had acquired throughout the day into action.

The students were wonderful; they were engaged, ambitious and determined all day long.
Considering the intensity of the day, the sustained focus from students was remarkable. Ms
Dupasquier said, “In the years we’ve been running this event, today was the best we’ve ever
seen students respond to the input. They listened carefully and applied what they heard to
 the tasks throughout the day.”

Students were similarly positive about the day. Lily Alliston commented, “I’ve learnt a lot from
today and I am finally feeling confident about my upcoming exams.” Another student, Jack
Cox, said about the day, “I can use semi-colons now and feel more confident in both Maths and
 English.”

From the evidence of the attitude and work ethic shown on this away-day, these 30 students should
be proud of the quality of work they are able to produce and should prove to be very successful in
their upcoming GCSE exams. Mr Hatchard said, “we wish these students, and all the other Year
11 students, very well in all their GCSE exams.”

All GCSE English and maths students should remember that there is a plethora of material on Firefly
to aid their revision over the coming days and weeks. It is all very useful and echoes the work that
 students completed on the away-day.

  Kent and Sussex Article
I sadly share the information relating to a recent newspaper publication. I would far rather you
heard information from me than try and guess at the details behind a story. The Kent and Sussex
Courier have taken the decision to run with a story prompted by an unpleasant anonymous letter
from someone stating they are a concerned parent relating to an image taken from my Twitter
  account several weeks ago.

The image was taken on a family day out at Birling Gap in my personal time at the weekend and
has been represented to suggest I was being unsafe. This is completely unfounded. I have spoken
to an editor at the Kent and Sussex Courier who has not allayed my concerns about the nature of
the report. For transparency, the anonymous letter submitted to school and my quote can be
  viewed using the link below.

Response to Kent and Sussex Article
        Website

I would like to offer my apologies for any upset caused to the College as a result. I can guarantee
you that in no way shape or form do I engage with, or advocate, any form of “risky behaviour” in
my spare time, as my 78 year old mother who was my company for the day would testify. I
obviously also fully support messages relating to safe use of students’ spare time.

One would hope that there is balance and proportion in reactions to the story but I cannot
guarantee this and therefore felt the need to inform you. There is clearly a valuable lesson here
about the extent to which I am able to lead a private life or the occasional ironic use of social
  media.

I am extremely grateful for the overwhelming and very kind support I have received from staff
  and governors.

  Ms Barlow

  Raising a Concern
Please can we stress again, as we have on many occasions, the importance of raising concerns
with us at the College in person. No matter how small it is, the dialogue we have together that
helps us to raise healthy, happy young people with support around them from home and school.

Use of anonymous messages or recourse to social media with which we do not engage, does not
lead to resolution of issues or ensure positive change. It can only be seen as detrimental to the
students and staff of the College.

We may not always agree but we will always work together for the benefit of our young people.
We have a long and positive record of addressing and resolving genuine concerns when they are
  raised directly with us.

  Supporters of Heathfield Community College
We are pleased to introduce ourselves as the ‘Supporters of Heathfield Community College’ and very much
look forward to meeting you at key College events throughout the academic year where we aim to support
projects that will enhance the whole College community.

Our initial focus will be to raise support and assistance for the refurbishment of the Dining Hall. This would
provide modern visuals, refreshed furniture including high level benching and stools with a real focus on
providing a modern healthy place for students to eat.

Our first fundraising event was a cake sale at Y7 Parents Evening in which we raised £75.56! We would like to
thank Y7 families for either donating cakes or money which will help towards kick starting this project!

We are aware many of us as parents would like to help and are just not sure how. With this in mind we
would like to build a bank of volunteers to help in a variety of different ways, for example: decorating
parties, baking for cake sales and even just sparing some valuable time to enable fun community events to
come to life. We would value any offers of time and commitment. To join our bank of volunteer helpers
please email epotter@heathfieldcc.co.uk specifying which area you feel you can support.

  Hemsley Family
  Dear Parents,

It is with regret that one of our families recently found out that their dad has cancer. He went to the doctor
for help with a persistent cough and was told after tests that he had a very short time to live.

A friend of the family has started a crowd funding page to help the family achieve their dreams and limit the
inevitable costs that come with such events.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this very difficult time. If you are able to spare any money
to help them create some memories before it is too late please visit the crowd funding page using the link
