City of Norwalk COVID-19 Update - Mayor Harry W. Rilling April 15, 2022 - Norwalk, CT
Update from
          Mayor Harry Rilling
As we approach the holiday weekend and students and teachers from Norwalk Public Schools
begin their April break, I continue to encourage everyone in our community to be safe by
following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

As currently seen in Connecticut, Norwalk continues to experience an uptick in COVID-19 cases
over the recent few weeks. Since our last report on April 1, the CT Department of Public
Health (DPH) shared that Norwalk's case rate has increased from 5.9 to 13.5 per 100,000
residents, which moves Norwalk from the Yellow into the Orange level per the CT DPH
COVID framework. This uptick in COVID activity is the result of the continued spread and
increased prevalence of the Omicron subvariant, BA.2, which is slightly more transmissible than
the Omicron strains from earlier in the year. According to the CDC, BA.2 is now approximately
86% of all new COVID cases in the country; 90% of new cases in New England; and about 93% in
New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.

Like all of you, I am ready for this pandemic to be over. I know that the past two years and more
have been challenging for everyone. However, Norwalk continues to provide our residents
with the best tools available to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe and healthy as
we continue to endure this pandemic. This includes visiting the website, COVID.gov, to
access the Test-to-Treat facility map locator, free at-home COVID tests and masks, and other
guidance and information regarding all things COVID-19.

We continue to encourage residents to get vaccinated and boosted. As a reminder, the Food
and Drug Administration and CDC recently updated their recommendations with respect
to an additional booster dose for those 50 years and older and those immunocompromised
who are 12 years and older. To learn where you can get vaccinated or boosted in our
community, visit norwalkct.org/vaccine.

Together, we can continue to mitigate the spread of this virus. We ask that if you have any
COVID-19 symptoms or believe you may have been exposed, you get tested and isolate
accordingly per CDC guidelines.

I thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as we overcome the challenges of this
pandemic. I wish you and your family a happy holiday weekend and a Happy Easter or Passover
if you celebrate them.

                                               Mayor Harry Rilling

   Trends & Analysis
The table below shows Norwalk in comparison to the 6 other largest cities by
population in Connecticut.

Norwalk's case rate increased from the previous report (two weeks ago),
much like the other 6 largest CT cities.

Analyzing cases per 100,000 residents helps track the incidence rate of
COVID-19 in the community and allows for standard comparisons
between communities. The test positivity rate is a secondary indicator of
transmission in Norwalk.

Norwalk
  Trends & Analysis
The total number of residents getting vaccinated in Norwalk
continues to increase every week, The table below shows the current
vaccine coverage by age group in Norwalk.

Nearly 79% of Norwalk residents of all ages (which includes those
who are not eligible) are fully vaccinated and over 40% have
received an additional/booster dose.

The 5-11-year-old age group is not eligible for booster doses yet, but
like other cities/towns, remains the lowest age group uptake as nearly
40% of 5-11-year-olds are fully vaccinated. This is partly due to their
later eligibility for the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

The full benefit of the COVID vaccine is not experienced until
someone completes the entire vaccine course, and is considered
fully vaccinated, which is two weeks from the final dose, and then
also up to date or "additional dose received," which is receiving a
booster or additional dose if eligible.

While Norwalk's vaccine coverage is high, it is important to note there
are still almost 19,000 residents of all ages who are not fully
vaccinated.

*CT DPH has capped the percent of population coverage metrics at 100%. These metrics could be
greater than 100% for multiple reasons or potential data reporting errors.
More details from the State DPH can be found here.
