12th edition the Citrus fruits of Cannero Riviera 9-17 March 2019 Sweet orange ph. Carlo Bava Citrus X sinensis
Not only Oranges! The gardens of Cannero Riviera will once again open their gates into the realm of biodiversity, giving visi- tors the opportunity to admire the citrus fruits that have made their home here in the northernmost reaches of Italy. The 2019 edition will feature the orange, with the invaluable collaboration of Professor Giuseppe Barbera of the University of Palermo. Talks and discussions will cover the extraordinary presence in loco of oranges with pigmented pulp, as well as moving beyond regional boundaries to reflect on the theme of “oranges-territory-legality”, with the contribution of growers and students from the town of Lentini, located on the slopes of Mt. Etna. This year will also mark the conclusion of the three-year cycle of “OrangeArancio”, the landscape installation cre- ated by volunteer workshops and dedicated to the cit- rus fruit considered the symbol of perfection. The Rio Cannero stream will also be explored through a photographic and sound installation ded- icated to the “Dream of the Four Melarance”. And this year’s art exhibit will present Simonetta Occhipinti‘s watercolor portraits of citrus fruits, Gold Medal winner of the 2016 London Botanical Art Show. All this ... and much more!

Citrus Fruit on Show In Wonderland “So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself in Wonderland, though [Alice] knew she had but to open them again, and all would change to dull reality” Lewis Carroll Surprised by the unexpected beauty of Cannero and its gardens, visitors of past editions have often described it as a “Wonderland”, which became the inspiration for the exhibition in the Sala Pietro Carmine. The dreamlike, surreal atmosphere of Lewis Carroll's fairy tale has been recreated as the background setting for the display of the incredible variety of these winter fruits … a stroll amid colors, scents and brushstrokes of fantasy, in a garden where nonsensical decorations, Victorian fancy and sensory suggestions all merge together sans rhyme or reason. Designed to pleasantly surprise the visitor, as well as explore new ways of presentation, yet with the spotlight always on the stars of the event: the great variety of cit- rus fruit found in Cannero’s incredible gardens. Plants, books and publications, sweets and perfume available for purchase. Experts for consultation and gardening advice on cultivating citrus fruits Sala Pietro Carmine - Zona Lido 9/10 and 16/17 March 10.30am-6pm Inauguration and tasting of typical local products Saturday 9 March 10.30am As usual, a number of private gardens will be open to the public during both weekends of the Festival Special for tourists Monday 11 to Friday 15 Guided tours with bilingual experts (German-Italian) departing daily at 2.30 pm from the Tourist Office (includes visits to the Exhibition, the Citus Park and private gardens). OrangeArancio Landscape Installation Lido Beach 9 to 17 March The journey of a thousand orange spheres, symboliz- ing the orange and the ideal of perfection, continues into its third and final year. Once again the colourful orbs will be arranged in a bright sheltered corner in an interpretation of the idea of a “garden town”. A new and surprising vision of the concept of awareness and safeguarding of the territory, developed through the introduction of different materials. The installation is the result of the work of a group of volunteers (mem- bers of the community and students) coordinated and led by the landscape designer Michela Pasquali and architect Federica Cornalba, in collaboration with the Associazione Culturale Gabaré. Saturday 9 March, 4-5.30pm Presentation of the installation and the new C.O. Simonetta Occhipinti, member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Circolo degli Artisti Casa di Dante, has exhibited her works at the Museum of Natural History and the Accademia dei Georgofili in Florence, the University of Camerino, Lindley Hall in London, and the Botanical Garden of Padua, where she participated in the Botanical Art Worldwide in 2018. The artist’s refined tech- nique, although solidly rooted in the in-depth study of Renaissance painting, is rendered contemporary by her par- ticular use of light and shading.
