As a child, you may have had•to make your bed every single morning and couldn't•leave for school until you did. Why? Nobody saw it and your bed just got all messed up again when you went to sleep at night, right? Admiral William McRaven was recently interviewed by Charlie Rose on this exact topic. Admiral Making the Bed Each Morning McRaven had served as a Navy SEAL in the past. In this interview, McRaven told of his morning habit that his mother had instilled into him as a child that his bed had to be made, and he had to make it every morning. She taught him how to bring the blankets smoothly over the entire bed and how to place the pillow•properly on the bed to finish this task. His mother was a Texas school teacher and his father was an Air Force Officer. He said he didn't grasp the importance of the simple task of making his bed in the morning until he was in SEAL training where they were required not only to make the bed, but that it had to be done exactly by their standards in order to pass inspection. This inspection, in conjunction with the uniform inspection, was performed every single morning. Solidifying and reinforcing his childhood training, this inspection procedure was taking the required excellence in daily tasks to a whole new level. McRaven said the lesson learned here was to do the first task of the day and to do it right. Then you could move on to the next task, always implementing the same attitude and mental fortitude in completing the task. There are very few who qualify for the level of discipline that is required by the strict standards in the SEAL training. It's training for the highest and most mentally and physically taxing part of the military. It requires a high level of individual self-discipline and it starts right there - with individual self-discipline. Health Corner Nutrition has a direct effect on the quality of your life and thinking that good nutrition costs a fortune is a misnomer. There are many reasons why adults should pay close attention to their nutritional needs. Proper nutrition ensures a balanced energy intake and this means the body does not have to store extra body fat. Extra body fat is responsible for serious health problems such as strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure due to hindered blood vessels, osteoporosis and more. Healthy nutrition also helps in warding off from various ailments while poor nutrition can cause ill health and suppress immune function. Nutrient-rich (or nutrient-dense) foods contain a lot of vitamins and minerals and few calories. They also are low in sugar, sodium, starches, and bad fats. Your body needs vitamins and minerals, known as micronutrients. They nourish your body and help keep you healthy. They can reduce your risk for chronic diseases. Getting them through food ensures that your body can absorb them properly. Choose a diet made up of nutrient-rich foods. Try to eat a variety of foods to get different vitamins and minerals. Foods that naturally are nutrient-rich include fruits and vegetables. Lean meats, fish, whole grains, dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds also are high in nutrients.

Resident Spotlight Hello, my name is Margaret Haug! I was born in Westward, CA on June 30, 1929. My husband, Lou, and I had been together for quite a while and shared 7 amazing children together. We owned a grocery business that became quite successful in our time. My favorite things here are the entertainment and the socials. Some words of wisdom would be to enjoy the time you spend here. A few words to describe me would be happy, busy-body, and hard working. Something you may not know about me is that I really enjoyed working on my gardens that I had in Morgan Hill. I like living here at Carlton as I enjoy the company of the other residents that live here.
Employee Spotlight Hello, my name is Wendy Ortiz and I was born in Ameca, Mexico on December 24, 1996. I currently work as a Director of First Impressions here at Carlton and have been here for almost 1 year. I am currently enrolled at Ohlone college studying Criminal Justice. In my free time, I really enjoy watching all kinds of movies. A few words of wisdom would be to not stress off of the things you can’t change. Three words to describe me are easy- going, outdoorsy, and friendly. My favorite part about working here, are all the things you get to learn from the residents since they come from different backgrounds and time eras. One thing you might not know about me is that I am a very good listener and I really enjoy listening to stories. Help us welcome our newest family members to our community Thursday March 29th At 3:30 Living Room

Preventative Exercise vs. Restorative Exercise By age 65, people who haven’t engaged in regular exercise may incur a decrease in their physical muscular strength level by as much as 80%. Muscle strengthening and balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls up to 45%. Live 2 B Healthy’s preventative exercise programs focus on improving strength, balance, and mobility. Remaining physically active in exercise before an injury or illness occurs, greatly reduces the chance of needing physical therapy or restorative exercise programs later to recover from an injury or fall. Functional decline in the elderly is often the result of a sedentary lifestyle, rather than the effects of the normal aging process. According to the U.S. Department of Aging, fitness programs can be effectively used to achieve the following goals for seniors: ● Lessen the degree of disability for seniors ● Increase muscular strength and endurance which deteriorates through inactivity ● Improve joint flexibility and range of motion by keeping them loose and flexible ● Strengthen bone mass which is weakened in later stage by osteo- porosis There is always one consistent finding in health research: Exercise helps you live longer and better. Live 2 B Healthy is dedicated to helping seniors remain strong and healthy to keep them mobile and active throughout their aging years. Keeping seniors actively involved in preventative exercise programs will reduce their risks of becoming ill, or experiencing a fall or injury. Regular exercise in seniors also aids in slowing down the aging process, and reducing the need of drug treatments. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” ~Maria R., Live 2 B Healthy Participant u www.Live2BHealthy.com u
