2 CHRISTMAS WITH RADIO WARNEFORD A very warm welcome to Radio Warneford’s 35th annual Christmas and New Year schedule. Our Christmas guide contains all the details of over seventy hours of special programmes that we have on offer just for you during the festive season. From music to poetry, drama to comedy, we really do have something for everyone this Christmas. The Radio Warneford Players, a theatre group made up of volunteer members of the station, have been creating their own unique versions of Christmas plays and pantomimes since 2010 and you can hear many of these fantastic productions over Christmas and the New Year including A Christmas Carol, Dick Whittington, Aladdin, The Wizard Of Oz and their new production The Queen’s Smile. Turn to page 7 to see a list of the dates and times for all of these shows. Radio Warneford broadcasts 24 hours a day and is available to listen to via the free NHS Wi-fi service within hospitals across South Warwickshire. Page 12 has the details on how to connect to our stream using your phone, tablet or another internet-ready device. You can now listen from anywhere by going to https://live.radiowarneford.com. 3 CHRISTMAS EVE Midnight PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Christmas Eve begins with a selection of programmes from the Radio Warneford archive. 9.55am WELCOME TO RADIO WARNEFORD An introduction to Radio Warneford and the programmes you can hear this Christmas Eve. 10.00am CHRISTMAS EASY Christmas is here and it’s the perfect time to play all those superbly cool and smooth tracks from the likes of Nat King Cole, Kay Starr, Eartha Kitt and of course Frank Sinatra. Snuggle down and listen to some of the best Christmas “easy” tracks ever with Ley Bricknell. 11.00am THE CHRISTMAS STORY John Glare sets the scene for Christmas Day telling the greatest of stories in words and music. 12 noon CHRISTMAS FAYRE Radio Warneford takes a look at food traditionally associated with Christmas. Linda Ashworth, Margaret Legge and Valda Reid help you to sharpen your taste buds ahead of the Christmas dinner, all wrapped up in a medley of festive music and readings. 1.00pm LOOK WHO’S COMING TO CHRISTMAS DINNER The Radio Warneford Players proudly present one of their new productions for the festive season. This is the story of a kind couple who invite in some cold and fairly terrible carol singers for dinner. As the wine flows, a party ensues! Producer: Dave Harris. 2.00pm A WINTER COLLECTION Andrew Preshous introduces a selection of music on the theme of winter, maybe with the word “winter” in the title, related to the winter months or linked to winter themes. How many of them do you recognise? 3.00pm CHRISTMAS AT THE MOVIES Imagine that you are snuggled up on a cold Christmas Day. Then have a listen to these theme tunes played by Louise Kalus and Elizabeth Wilkinson and see if they conjure up images from some classic movies. …continued on page 4
4 CHRISTMAS EVE (continued) 4.00pm SPOTLIGHT ON CHRIS DIFFORD Stephen Height looks at the musical career of the founder member of the group Squeeze. 4.10pm A CHRISTMAS CAROL Here is another chance to catch the Radio Warneford Players special version of Charles Dickens’ classic Victorian Christmas tale. Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve, each one determined to make him see the error of his miserly ways. The Players are back on Boxing Day at 1.00pm with their new 2019 production, The Queen’s Smile. 5.00pm THE A-Z OF A VERY 70’S CHRISTMAS Richard Smith chooses a selection of festive tracks from the 1970’s for each of the letters in the alphabet. From Lynn Anderson to “Wonderful Christmastime”, the show features songs from The Jackson Five, Johnny Mathis, The Beatles, Bing Crosby and Showaddywaddy along the way. 6.00pm PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Your Christmas Eve continues with a selection of treats – from pop to drama – from our extensive archive. 5 BOXING DAY Midnight PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Radio Warneford broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to patients at Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon and Ellen Badger hospitals and at the Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital. We begin Boxing Day with a selection of programmes from the archive. 12 noon CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS Ley Bricknell brings you an intoxicating mix of hi-fi holiday music from the 1950’s and 1960’s. If these hot chestnuts don't jingle your bells, then you’re scrooged! 1.00pm THE QUEEN’S SMILE Another brand new production from the Radio Warneford Players! The Queen is sad and the Princess needs to marry a prince, but only when her mother smiles again. The King finds a prince but is he all he makes out to be? Will there be a happy ending and does love conquer all? Starring: Linda Ashworth, Valda Reid, Nigel Dyer, Paul Sawtell, Dave Harris, Sarah Harris and Lily Harris. Written by Jenny James. Produced and directed by Sue Dolman and Lynn Fairbairn. Recorded and edited by Andrew Barker. 1.30pm THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 Sara Lister and Margaret Legge remember the famous Christmas Day truce on the frontline during World War One when British and German troops met in No Man’s Land for a festive football match. 2.00pm THE SONGBIRDS KEEP SINGING Paul Sawtell brings you two hours of female vocalists singing beautiful songs of love, peace, trouble and joy. From the first blues and folk artists to their current day contemporaries, this is a celebration of the female voice and female singer/songwriters. 4.00pm THE A-Z OF A VERY 80’S CHRISTMAS Richard Smith dusts off some of those favourite 1980’s Christmas hits from A to Z featuring Wham, The Pogues, David Bowie, Shakin’ Stevens and, of course, Cliff Richard! 5.00pm CHRISTMAS VINTAGE YEARS Jim Simpson plays a selection of festive songs from the Roaring Twenties to the Swinging Sixties from all of your favourite artists including Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald and the Andrews Sisters. 6.00pm PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Boxing Day evening continues with music and entertainment from the Radio Warneford archive. Find out who sang the original versions of Wind Beneath My Wings and He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother and hear an unusual cover version of The Beatles’ Day Tripper, sung by an iconic American actress. But who is she? 12 noon MORE CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS Some more musical hot toddies from the 1950’s and 1960’s to melt your snow cone! You’d better deck the wards, spike the eggnog – you’re in Yulesville with Ley Bricknell. 1.00pm THE WIZARD OF OZ The Radio Warneford Players present a special adaptation of the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz. When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. Follow Dorothy and Toto’s adventures along the Yellow Brick Road towards the Emerald City! 2.00pm TEA AND COFFEE Sara Lister chooses a selection of songs all about our two favourite beverages – tea and coffee – featuring music icons like Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole and Beverley Knight. 3.00pm SITTING ON THE PIER Stephen Height interviews Coventry-based poet and writer Emily Jones who talks about her writing, some of the things that inspire her and reads some of her poems. 4.00pm CLASSICAL SYMPHONIA Cliff Proctor introduces excerpts from some of the most famous symphonies by eight composers including Mozart, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Haydn and Beethoven. 6.00pm PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Friday continues with more specially selected programmes from the archives. The Radio Warneford Players was set up in 2010 to perform and record specially written plays and pantomimes for Christmas. The Players are made up of budding thespians from Radio Warneford’s volunteer membership and have now recorded a number of specially written pantomimes including new versions of “Aladdin”, “Mother Goose”, “The Wizard Of Oz” and “Dick Whittington”. Out pops an all-powerful genie – and in a puff of smoke, Aladdin’s life is changed forever. A magical carpet ride of an adventure. 12.40pm HEATHER ENNESS’S BATTLE OF THE GIANTS Heather Enness transports you to the movies with her battle of the top film music composers – James Horner, Hans Zimmer and John Williams. Who will triumph? 1.00pm THE BEST ADVERTS ON TV Many of the adverts that you see on television use existing tunes to sell their products. Chris Ackroyd is here to play some of his favourites. 2.00pm BEST OF BRITISH Britain has produced some fantastic singers over the decades. Join Louise Kalus for an hour of some of the very best of them, from the 1940’s right through to the present day. 3.00pm THE VINYL PICK N MIX SHOW Stephen Height showcases Radio Warneford’s collection of 7-inch (45 rpm) vinyl singles. The songs have been picked by our listeners, who submitted their choice of numbers that matched the library numbers on the discs. Some of the artists to feature include Roxy Music, Mel Tormé, Madonna, Wet Wet Wet and Telly Savalas. 4.00pm PROGRAMMES FROM THE ARCHIVE Time to lie back, unwind and enjoy the very best music and drama from the Radio Warneford archive. Ley Bricknell takes us though the history of Radio Warneford and plays some archive recordings. 3.00pm THE TUESDAY TEAM 2019 REVIEW Radio Warneford’s Tuesday team take a look back at the music and events of the past twelve months. 4.00pm AN INSPECTOR CALLS The Birlings are celebrating their daughter’s engagement when a police inspector arrives with questions about their relationships with a young woman who has committed suicide. It’s easy to listen to Radio Warneford on your mobile or tablet Radio Warneford broadcasts programmes for patients, staff and visitors at Warwick and Stratford Hospitals, as well as Ellen Badger in Shipston-on-Stour and the Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital, 24 hours a day on the free NHS Wi-Fi service available throughout most of these NHS sites. In order to listen to our programmes you need to connect your device to NHS Wi-Fi and then load our player page. The first time you access NHS Wi-Fi, you will have to set up the connection on your device and register for access – after that, your device should connect automatically. Just follow these easy steps to get connected to Radio Warneford. Have you logged into NHS Wi-Fi on this device before? You should be reconnected automatically. Look for the Wi-Fi symbol, usually at the top of your home screen. If you are connected, you should see the My NHS home page when you open your web browser. Otherwise continue with the next step and register again. Set up your connection to the NHS Wi-Fi service. Go to the Wi-Fi settings on your device and choose NHS Wi-Fi. You need to register in order to access the service but remember that NHS Wi-Fi is free to use. Enter your details, agree to the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, then click . You can also log in using a social media account. Open the web browser on your device. You should be taken to the My NHS home page. You are now connected to the internet. You may receive an email asking you to confirm your email address. You do not need to reply in order to use the NHS Wi-Fi service. You also do not need to sign up for an account should you be asked to do so by email. You can find our live stream by typing https://live.radiowarneford.com into your browser. Click the Play button to start the stream. You can also access our live broadcast via our website at www.radiowarneford.com and click the Live Stream button.
