THE CATHEDRAL AND METROPOLITICAL CHURCH OF CHRIST, CANTERBURY Celebration of Reader Ministry at Choral Evensong with Licensing of Readers Sunday 26th September 2021 5.30pm Nave
Welcome to Canterbury Cathedral for this Service Readers are theologically trained licensed lay ministers; they are ministers of the Word with a passion for sharing the Gospel. All sorts of people are called to Reader ministry because disciples of Jesus come from all walks of life. The Office of Reader is a voluntary lay ministry within the Church of England that is nationally accredited, episcopally licensed and governed by canon law. Readers are also known as Licensed Lay Ministers (LLM). There are currently around 140 active Readers in our diocese. Readers play a vital role in the public ministry of the Church by leading worship, teaching and preaching, as well as being engaged in outreach to the wider community. As local lay theologians Readers offer a ministry that is church-focused, community facing, and world-affirming. They work collaboratively in ministry teams alongside clergy and other lay colleagues. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised. Music: Philip Radcliffe (1905-86) 2
We remain standing to sing Hymn Guide me, O thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty, Hold me with thy powerful hand: Bread of heaven, Feed me now and evermore. 2 Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fiery cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through: Strong deliverer, Be thou still my strength and shield. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan's side: Songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. Words: Welsh, William Williams (1717-1791) Tune: CWM RHONDDA AM652 Tr Peter Williams (1727-1796) Sit In conversation Hearing from two Readers 3
Remain seated as the choir sings Psalm 121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills : from whence cometh my help. My help cometh even from the Lord : who hath made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved : and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold, he that keepeth Israel : shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord himself is thy keeper : the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand; So that the sun shall not burn thee by day : neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil : yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in : from this time forth for evermore. Stand Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Sit Reading Matthew 9.1-8 Read by Tracy Williams And after getting into a boat Jesus crossed the water and came to his own town. And just then some people were carrying a paralysed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.’ Then some of the scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven”, or to say, “Stand up and walk”? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—he then said to the paralytic—‘Stand up, take your bed and go to your home.’ And he stood up and went to his home. When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings. 4
Please remain seated for Homily The Bishop of Dover We stand to sing Hymn The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want; He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still, still waters, His goodness restores my soul. And I will trust in you alone, And I will trust in you alone, For your endless mercy follows me, Your goodness will lead me home. He guides my ways in righteousness, And he anoints my head with oil, And my cup, it overflows with joy, I feast on his pure delights. And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one, For you are with me, and your rod and staff Are the comfort I need to know. Words: based on Psalm 23 Music: Stuart Townend (b. 1963) AM 800 5
The Admission and Licensing of Readers The congregation sits, the Candidate comes forward and stands in front of the Bishop The Bishop says My brothers and sisters, God has called us into the fellowship of the universal Church. As members of his body, Christ calls us to minister together in his name and, according to our gifts, to be instruments of his love in the world. Readers are called to a ministry of the word, preaching and teaching, inspiring others to follow the way of Christ, and calling them to share in the good news of the kingdom. They are called to a liturgical ministry, leading worship, proclaiming the gospel story and helping God’s people to greet their living Lord, so that they may worship him, praise him and live by his commands. The Warden says Bishop Rose, I present to you Tracy Williams who has satisfactorily completed her training. She has made the Declaration of Assent and the declaration of obedience to the Archbishop. She is a person of Christian character, well versed in the Holy Scriptures and in the doctrines of our faith. She has been sufficiently well prepared for the duties of the office. I recommend that she be both admitted to the office of Reader and licensed to her deanery under the nomination of her incumbent. The Bishop turns to the candidate and says In order that we may be satisfied that you are ready to begin the ministry of a Reader, you must now answer the questions we put to you. Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry? R. I do so believe. Will you be faithful in leading the people of God in worship, and in preaching the word to them? R. By the grace of God, I will. Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel? R. By the grace of God, I will. 6
Will you endeavour to fashion your life according to the way of Christ? R. By the grace of God, I will. Will you promote unity, peace and love in the Church and in the world, and especially among those whom you serve? R. By the grace of God, I will. Will you work closely with your colleagues in ministry and encourage the gifts of others? R. By the grace of God, I will. The supporting priest stands and the Bishop asks him Will you work closely with your new Reader and encourage her to use her gifts and develop her ministry? R. I will. Will you commend her to the people amongst whom she will minister? R. I will. The candidate turns and faces the congregation. The congregation stands. The Bishop says to the congregation Brothers and sisters, Tracy has been chosen for the office of Reader. Will you uphold and encourage her in their ministry? All We will. Will you continue to pray for her? All We will. All sit The Bishop greets the candidate and presents her with a Bible, her Certificate of Admission and License saying Tracy, I admit you as a Reader in the Church, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. You have received this book as a sign that we admit you as a Reader in the Church. Speak God’s word to his people, build them up in his truth, and serve them in his name. Receive authority to exercise the office of Reader in this diocese. May the Lord be with you in all your work and ministry from this day onwards. Amen. 7
We welcome you as a minister of God’s word. May the word of Christ dwell in you richly. The newly-admitted Reader returns to her place, her Parish Priest places her scarf upon her. Those to be issued new licenses stand before the Bishop who presents them with their Licenses and says Receive authority to exercise the office of Reader in this diocese. May the Lord be with you in all your work and ministry from this day onwards. Amen. Those Readers who were admitted and licensed online come forward and stand in front of the Bishop. The Warden of Readers says Bishop Rose, last year you admitted and licensed Margaret, Ann, Isobel, Anne, Sharon, Peter and Graham online due to COVID restrictions, I now present them in person to be affirmed in their ministry as Readers. The Bishop says Margaret, Ann, Isobel, Anne, Sharon, Peter and Graham, you have received authority to exercise the office of Reader in this diocese. May the Lord continue to be with you in all your work and ministry. Amen. Those to become Readers Emeriti stand before the Bishop The Bishop presents them with their Certificates and says Ever-loving Father, we thank you for the years of service given to your Church by these Readers. May they continue to live close to you and share your love with others. Bless them and guard them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The congregation applauds the newly licensed Readers and Readers Emeriti. 8
All stand as the Bishop says Let us all stand together, and pray that God will renew our commitment to serving his people, each in our own ministry, as the Choir sings Mary’s song of joy. The Choir sings Magnificat My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Music: Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) 9
Sit or Kneel Prayers led by the Precentor, concluding with Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Remain seated as the choir sings Anthem We will rejoice in Thy salvation We will rejoice in thy salvation, and triumph in the Name of the Lord our God. Now know I that the Lord helpeth his Anointed, and will hear him from his holy heaven : even with the wholesome strength of his right hand. Some put their trust in chariots, and some in horses : but we will remember the Name of the Lord our God. Words: Psalm 20.5-7 Music: William Croft (1678-1727) 10
We stand to sing Hymn O Jesus, I have promised 3 O Jesus, thou hast promised To serve thee to the end; To all who follow thee, Be thou for ever near me, That where thou art in glory My Master and my Friend: There shall thy servant be; I shall not fear the battle And, Jesus, I have promised If thou art by my side, To serve thee to the end: Nor wander from the pathway O give me grace to follow, If thou wilt be my guide. My Master and my Friend. 2 O let me hear thee speaking 4 O let me see thy foot-marks, In accents clear and still And in them plant mine own; Above the storms of passion, My hope to follow duly The murmurs of self-will; Is in thy strength alone; O speak to reassure me, O guide me, call me, draw me, To hasten or control; Uphold me to the end; O speak, and make me listen, And then in heaven receive me, Thou guardian of my soul.
