THE LIVING AND LEADING BY FAITH CATECHETICAL LEADER AND CATECHIST
FORMATION PROGRAM
The Living and Leading by Faith Catechetical Leader and Catechist Formation Program (LLF),
now in its tenth year, provides education and formation opportunities both online through My Catholic
Faith Delivered and Catholic Distance University and in classroom settings for all catechetical leaders and
catechists in the Diocese of Brooklyn.
The diocesan policy follows:
All who administer or teach in parish programs of religious education or in a Catholic
academy/parish school must be theologically prepared, spiritually mature, and skilled in
the methods of religious education/formation. Catechetical Leaders including Directors
of Faith Formation, Coordinators of Religious Education, Principals, Assistant Principals,
and Teachers in a Catholic academy/parish school, Coordinators of Youth and Young
Adult Ministry, Coordinators of Adult Faith Formation, Coordinators of the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults and Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for Children, other
parish staff with significant catechetical responsibility, and diocesan or parish catechist
are expected to fulfill the requirements of Catholic Faith Formation according to the
approved Living and Leading by Faith Catechetical Leader and Catechist Formation
Program of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, approved by Bishop Nicholas
DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, in January of 2010.
At least ten (10) hours of approved adult faith formation is required each year and must
be recorded on one’s online transcript managed by My Catholic Faith Delivered.
FOR CATECHISTS
There are two major components of the LLF program, providing ample opportunities for people at
all levels of education and formation to participate:
I. Initial Faith Formation
The LLF offers initial formation for new catechists who are required to take the following six courses
either online or onsite within in the first four years of beginning work (paid or volunteer) in the diocese:
• The Creed—10 hours
• The Sacraments—10 hours

• Morality—10 hours
• Prayer—10 hours
• Introduction to Catechesis—5 hours
• Introduction to the Bible—5 hours
Exemptions to the Initial Faith Formation requirements are limited to the following:
1. An approved Bachelor of Arts degree or Master of Arts degree in Theology or Religious Studies
received within the last ten years
2. A Certificate of Completion from an approved Archdiocesan or Diocesan Catechist Formation
program within the last ten years.
II. Ongoing Faith Formation
Upon completion of the Initial Formation component of 50 hours, a minimum of 10 hours is
required every year of active involvement in parish or Catholic academy/parish school work. A certificate
of completion will be granted after every 50 hours of successfully completed approved coursework. Please
note that courses can only be counted for credit one time.
FOR CATECHETICAL LEADERS
All Catechetical Leaders including Directors of Faith Formation, Coordinators of Religious
Education, Coordinators of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Coordinators of Adult Faith Formation,
Coordinators of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for
Children , Catholic Academy and Parish School Administrators, and other parish staff with significant
catechetical responsibility, with any level of experience or education, must complete at least ten hours of
approved Living and Leading by Faith credit annually.
Depending on the level of experience, a catechetical leader may participate in the Holy Spirit
Institute’s program for an undergraduate or graduate certificate.

My Catholic Faith Delivered
My Catholic Faith Delivered (MCFD) provides an online learning system to help Catholics in the
Diocese of Brooklyn and beyond grow, communicate, learn, and evangelize. Every LLF participant must
have an account with My Catholic Faith Delivered (MCFD). Follow the instructions found later in this
document to create an account. Once an account is established, a personal transcript is created. The
MCFD’s platform is used for courses and events. Our collaboration with MCFD strengthens the overall
education and formation of the members of the diocesan faith community.
Over 10,000 adults in Brooklyn, Queens, and beyond are now part of this learning community.

Catholic Distance University
Catholic Distance University (CDU) offers accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees and
certificates as well as continuing education programs. Courses offered in the continuing education
category are accepted for LLF credit. A special coupon code now permits anyone in the Diocese of
Brooklyn to take the continuing education courses for a reduced cost. The promocode is:
BROOKLYNMEM17 (subject to change). Those who use this code and click on "apply" when they register
for a course will pay a reduced fee for the course. To review course offerings and to register, go to
https://cdu.catalog.instructure.com/ All CDU courses are the equivalent of ten hours LLF credit and
apply to the Ongoing Component ONLY.
Webinars
Webinars are offered by various companies and organizations. Due to the variance in the way that
webinars are presented and the challenges regarding the approval of content, participation in a webinar
may not be counted towards LLF credit.
Approved Degree or Certificate Programs
Participation in the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Holy Spirit Institute for Service and Leadership, a
Secretariat approved graduate program or certificate in theology, religious education, or other related area
takes precedence over the annual LLF requirement of ten hours.

Annual LLF Consultation (Interview) with Supervisor
An important part of the LLF Program is regular consultation with one’s supervisor. Each LLF
participant should meet at least annually with a supervisor to discern the best course(s) or event(s) based
on particular needs. A plan of action should be created and followed. The record of participation is then
kept on the transcript at My Catholic Faith Delivered.
