This year has been a celebration of our maritime heritage on the waters of Corio Bay and the Geelong waterfront. The Festival of Sails 175th Passage Race and the 2018 Wooden Boat Festival both highlighted the traditions and progress of Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Our Club has been a feature of Geelong’s community since its foundation at the first General Meeting of the Club held at Mack’s Hotel on June 1, 1859. The Club’s activities still focus on the original interest in keelboat sailing but it extends to Off the Beach boats and sailing for all abilities and ages. The early interest in rowing races for whale boats, gigs, jollys and four-oared cutters disappeared decades ago but we now see growing enthusiasm for rowing St. Ayles skiffs, some built by RGYC Members in a community project! Corio Bay, 1850 Source: State Library of Victoria The world of sailing continues to change. Our yachts are faster, easier to handle and easier to maintain than those of the past. The Superfoiler racing at RGYC this year was extraordinary to see. Our Members are bringing larger yachts to the Club and require larger marina facilities to accommodate them. Boat owners around Port Phillip Bay and beyond are seeking destinations for their recreation. Geelong’s population is increasing rapidly and many people are now moving close to the waterfront. Our plans are to make these changes into opportunities for the Club to enhance our facilities for sailing and boating on Corio Bay. There have been many developments of the Club’s facilities since that initial meeting at Mack’s Hotel 159 years ago. The most significant buildings and marina infrastructure (1984/5) have involved support from City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian Government. The Club has built on these historic successes during the development of the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct Project. Our Board and staff have worked on this project for over 3 years and we have achieved significant funding commitments from the City of Greater Geelong, State Government of Victoria and the Australian Government. Our RGYC Members have indicated very strong support for the Club’s own funding commitment to the Project in a ballot taken this year. We are now moving into the design phase and expect to have further RGYC Member discussions of the plans in the near future. We are in another significant time when our Club has led change rather than been passive. Our presence on the Geelong waterfront is assured. Royal Geelong Yacht Club received a number of accolades at the Victorian Sailing Awards held Friday 1 June, 2018, with Michael Parks being named Victorian Junior Sailor of the Year and the Club receiving the Media & Publicity Award. Four other RGYC sailors were recognised at the awards night, with Michael and Steven Case taking first place in the Victorian Sailing Cup (29er class) and Elliot Hughes and William Farnell also finishing in first place in the Victorian Sailing Cup (International Cadet class). Victorian Junior Sailor of the year, Michael Parks, also picked up a first place in the Victorian Sailing Cup in the Laser 4.7 class. 16-year-old Michael already has an impressive sailing resume, becoming a World Champion at the age of 14 with the ISAF World Team Racing Championship. Michael will again compete on the world stage this coming July in the Laser 4.7 class in Gydnia, Poland. Royal Geelong Yacht Club was successful in winning the Media & Publicity Award for 2017/18, for its extensive coverage of the Festival of Sails, Wooden Boat Festival and RGYC sailing programs. The Festival of Sails celebrated 175 years of the Passage Race in January, while the Wooden Boat Festival enjoyed significantly increased crowds over the March Labour Day long weekend. The Royal Geelong Yacht Club was visited by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in January, increasing the profile of the club and its fundamental role in revitalising the waterfront. kSafe stripe 02. In 1999 to 2001, the then Commodore, Don Collins ushered in a new program for RGYC called “Sailability”. The program began with assistance / support from Murray Mitchelhill, Tony Minchin, Steve Bartlett and others. One of the first volunteers was Val Farnell, who is still volunteering to this day. It is for her long service to Sailability that Val was awarded the “Lofty Thomas” trophy which recognises her support and dedication to the Sailability program. This past season saw good weather for the pre- Christmas sessions with 59 clients enjoying a total of 292 on water experiences. This was of course supported by our brilliant volunteers. Our post-Christmas sessions suffered some poor weather, and with RGYC running major events (FoS, Super Foilers, Geelong Speed Trials etc.), our numbers were a little down. Fifty eight clients were supported by our volunteers enjoying a total of 155 sailing experiences. During our pre-Christmas program we were audited by one of participant groups and found that the slings we use to lift participants in and out of the yachts were out of date. Thanks to the generosity of both the Shannon Park Foundation and RGYC ten new slings were purchased to bring us back into accreditation. Our volunteer numbers are decreasing and we would be more than happy to hear from any RGYC members willing to participate in our program. Volunteer activities include assisting sailors onto the yachts, skippering the yacht, driving the safety boat and organising equipment. It is interesting to note that not all volunteers are current members, indeed, some have never been members but choose to support this very worthy and enjoyable program. Some volunteers participate in more than one day sailing each week. We operate 3 days per week in the Daylight Saving period, and we are very dependent on good weather conditions on the day to ensure the If you wish to put back into our sport and our Graeme Ritchie safety of our participants. community, this is the perfect platform.
