All month long, there were street fairs, flag-raising, and wreath laying ceremonies throughout the state and dinners at lodges that were thrilled to finally open their doors since the pandemic started. Each event was special and not only brought the opportunity to celebrate our Italian heritage and culture with food, song, and dance but the chance to stand together and celebrate Christopher Columbus and all he accomplished and what he represents to us. As I write this, the month is ending, and while the official “Italian Heritage Month” will end, we all know it continues every day. Because as Italians, we love our traditions. We are who we are. We embrace life, all of it. Family, art, music, food, edu- cation, and everything we do represent our pride in our Italian descent. If that is not enough, to add beauty to the landscape, the “Anita Rose” will soon be planted and cultivated on the grounds of the GMM, giving tribute to the valiant heroine, Ana Maria de Jesus Riberio da Silva a.k.a. Anita Garibaldi. The interior of the GMM is also undergoing a renewal of sorts, with the Garibaldi Room already completed with numerous artifacts and a historical narrative, that gives a rightful tribute to both General Giuseppe Garibaldi and his beloved wife Anita. In the Meucci Room, an extensive acknowledgment is given to the inventive genius of Antonio Meucci, as evidenced by a multitude of his inventions, in addition to his Telettrofono, which he invented when Alexander Graham Bell was still a toddler. Esterre Mochi Meucci is now also being given her rightful place in history, with a dedicated corner in the Meucci Room, which shows her innate talent as a seamstress who so meticulously created numerous spectacular costumes for theater actors. All in all, the GMM is becoming, more and more a tourist’s must see point of interest. It is also a place to be a part of as a member. Regarding being a member of the GMM, although, the number of GMM members has significantly increased during the past two years, the goal of having 1,000 actively enrolled members has yet to reach the halfway mark. The importance of having a membership affiliation to the GMM cannot be empha- sized enough, as a mere $25 annual fee for a single member multiplied by a 1,000 has the potential to exponentially sustain the financial solvency of the GMM. If you don’t believe a 1,000 is a significant number, look at what General Giuseppe Garibaldi accom- plished with his 1,000 Red Shirts. Therefore, if you have considered becoming a member of the GMM and put it in the back burner, it’s now time to take a few minutes to contact the GMM to express your interest in being one of the 1,000.
