SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 12, 2023 Fulfilling the Law By Deacon John Erdag, Director of Adult Faith FormaƟon & Pastoral Assistant “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live” – Sirach 15:15 Two weeks ago, we heard Jesus teaching us the beatitudes and what to do to find happiness in the world. Today Jesus continues His sermon on the mount by instructing His disciples what not to do. I often have people ask me if the beatitudes that were given by Jesus, the New Covenant, replace the 10 Commandments of the Old Covenant. The quick answer is, “No.” You still can’t murder or covet or commit adultery or speak falsely against another or act against any of the other commandments. The beatitudes are not a loophole to ignore the law. In fact, in today’s Gospel, which is still His sermon on the mount and is only 4 verses past the beatitudes, Jesus flat out says, “Do not think that I have come abolish the law and the prophets, I have come, not to abolish them, but to fulfill them.” Then He continues on: “Of this much I assure you: until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter of the law. . . shall be done away with until it all comes true.” Then in typical Jesus fashion, He goes beyond the literalness of the time and explains the intention or the spirit of the Commandments. Because just as the Beatitudes are viewed in the context of “how our attitudes should be”, the 10 Commandments should also be looked at in the broader sense. As what the “commands- meant”. Jesus explains, “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” Anger and disrespect of another is usually the root cause of killing. Jesus is saying that root cause is wrong. He tells His disciples that if they get angry or use abusive or derogatory language against another, they are risking “the fires of Gehenna.” He also warns not only about acts of impurity, adultery, divorce or lying, but how having thoughts of those things commits them in our hearts. We are to understand that the subtleties of evil are not limited to only the serious matters that are verbally mentioned in the commandments. But also, to understand the effects that these evils have on our hearts even without acting. Jesus is explaining how to look at the commandments with full awareness. In doing so, these laws help reveal our sins. And in every one of these examples Jesus teaches that our inward obedience is just as important as our external obedience. Keeping the letter of the law and keeping the spirit of the law. Jesus is saying both are essential. So let’s look at that. It’s grave enough if any of us have ever murdered anyone. And if we haven’t, that’s good. But how many of us can say that we don’t get angry and criticize others because they don’t agree with us? Any political discussion has thrown that out the window. Or gossip about them to other people? Or retaliate if we feel we’ve been wronged? We may never have committed adultery. But how many of us disrespect our spouses, and our Lord, by watching racy television shows or movies? Just about any reality show today will do that. Heck, even the half time show at today’s Super Bowl will cross the line and tempt an evil thought in our hearts. I guarantee it. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is very clear about what we are not to do. Yes, the laws have direct commands that we are to follow. Those are generally the easy things not to do. But Jesus is reminding us of the ‘lesser’ things that tend to slip our minds that are just as dangerous. If His message makes us uncomfortable, then we’ve gotten the point. But the good news is that as we become more mindful of the spirit of the law, we become more in tune with upholding it. And that increases our lives with Him. Our First Reading today from Sirach says, “If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live.” 2
