Welcome To Our Platinum
                 Jubilee Celebration
It gives us great pleasure to see you all here, supporting our event. Whether you are a return visitor, or
this is your first visit to the Great Central, we really hope you enjoy your day.
The show this year has been a pure labour of love for the team due to the last minute change from our
annual 1940’s Wartime Weekend. We hope you all understand the reasons why, so with this year being
Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee it only felt fitting to celebrate her first 50yrs of life, especially
as our wonderful railway lends the decades so well from our own heritage.
We hope that you enjoy this new show which is probably the largest event we have ever held. It is hard
work putting on a show of this size, and we would personally like to thank all of our dedicated
volunteers who work and have worked tirelessly to make the Great Central Railway what it is today. We
would also like to extend a special thanks to anyone who has taken time to support our show this year
and bring a display, all our re-enactors working to bring the 1920s-70s back to life for us all to enjoy. I
would also like to thank the many visitors who are dressed in period to impress you all.
Please do take the time to visit all of our stations, there really is something for everyone from each
decade. Our oldest themed station is Rothley which plays host to 1926-1936 with an amazing Olde Time
Steam Fun Fair and a variety of entertainment throughout the day. Quorn & Woodhouse portrays 1937-
1947 has a range of re-enactments including Military groups from the Commonwealth; US 82nd Airbourne,
National Fire Service, Men at Work Road Gang and a vast array of vintage vehicles on a daily basis – NOT
forgetting our adjacent field that will have our regular Traders Village, more re-enactment groups and a
special guest on behalf of Her Majesty’s Service – Chinook MK6 of 28 Sqn RAF Benson. Loughborough
Central is our free spirit station covering 1948-1968, with giant hopscotch and Twister to play whilst
listening to some amazing singers and visiting Choir (full datails inside) and last but not least the most
modern of our stations – Leicester North portraying 1969-1976’s. Here you can listen to ABBA Sensation –
a tribute band to the Eurovision Winners of 1974, our Singing Policeman and his 1970’s Police car and
watch our wonderful Steam Trains run round to take you back along the line.
Over each of the four days we have flypasts from none other than the BBMF Hurricane and Lancaster;
there is an extensive train timetable alongside endless entertainment at each station, culminating on our
emotive ‘Close of Show’ in Quorn yard on Sunday with a 3 plane Ariel display at approximately 3.30pm.
On a final note, the heart of the previous event 1940’s Wartime has always been about remembrance.
With that in mind, please join us for our ‘Then and Now – Service of Thanks’ on Sunday morning at 11am
in the main marquee. Everyone is welcome to the service, we all have those we wish to remember and
this is a beautiful tribute.
Please enjoy yourselves as The Great Central Railway takes you back to the first 50 years of Her
Majesty’s Life.

Quorn & Woodhouse
                1937-1947
Quorn and Woodhouse station played an important part in the era it is portraying
at this event, by hosting the US Army’s 82 nd Airbourne Regiment throughout WW2.
Queen Elizabeth II helped the war effort by joining the ATS when she turned 18 in
1944. We have a variety of re-enactment groups with us throughout the weekend
alongside some great displays from the NFS/AFS. Quorn also plays host to our
Traders Village and our great evening dances on Thursday and Saturday Nights.

Get into that disco fever and put on your dancing shoes at Leicester North where we
celebrate the best of the 1970s! The Great Central was closed as part of Dr
Beeching’s famous ‘Reshaping of Britain’s Railways’ but a determined group of
volunteers stood their ground to preserve what they could of the Great Central Route
resulting in the Great Central re-opening for train rides at Loughborough in 1972.

About The Line
                                            1891-1899
In 1891 the then Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway approached parliament to build a
new line between Annesley to a new terminus in London - Marylebone. The M.S.L.R. Became the
Great Central Railway in 1897 and the line opened to freight in 1898 and to passengers in 1899.
                                           1900-1960
In 1923 the Great Central became part of the London, North Eastern Railway (LNER) one of the
Big 4 and in 1948 was nationalised to form part of British Railways (Eastern) and later British
                                       Railways (Midland).
                                            1960-1969
The Great Central’s decline began in 1960 when express services to London were cancelled, and
replaced with a poor semi-fast service from Nottingham to London. The small country stations
closed in 1963 and in 1966 the line was cut to only run between Nottingham and Rugby. In 1969
the line was closed completely as part of Dr Beeching’s Reshaping of British Railways.

                                                            1969-1972
Just before the line closed a meeting was held at Leicester Central where the Main Line Preservation
Group was formed. This group set out to preserve some of the GCR and in 1972 the first steam services
ran in preservation at Loughborough Central.
                                                               2022
Today the Great Central Railway PLC is a thriving visitor attraction with four busy stations and a railway
stretching almost 9 Miles through the Charnwood countryside. We hold a variety of events throughout
the year where we run up to twelve steam locomotives and over 300 rail vehicles at any time.
