Careers News Contact: Mr K Pickles careers@dronfield.derbyshire.sch.uk Summer 2021 It’s official! Are we proud? Very! DHFS is delighted to be able to officially announce that following a rigourous assessment process, the school has now been recognised as a QiCS school. The Quality in Careers Standard, Gold Award, has been awarded to only a few schools across the country, and recognises excellence in careers education that has been sustained for a minimum of six years. A key part of the process was an assessment against the key Gatsby Benchmarks for careers education, and a thorough assessment of student views. Speaking after the announcement, Mr Pickles, Assistant Headteacher said “We are delighted to share this news, not only because it recognises the excellence that our Careers Programme provides, but also because it recognises the efforts of so many colleagues at DHFS that work tirelessly in supporting our students.” Interview Technique, practical advice to achieve success How do we learn about interview techniques? For many of us it was trial and error, and then learning from mistakes. This is why Year 10 and 11 receive trial interviews and interview technique guidance in school. There is lots of guidance on the internet to help students prepare. One particularly useful website is managed by the National Careers Service. During our present situation, telephone or ‘Video’ interviews may take place. Preparation is still the key! DO: 1. Dress smartly, look bright and attentive, and speak clearly and confidently. Don't forget that in the first few minutes only 7% of the interviewer's opinion of you is formed by what you say - the rest is judged on how you look, act and sound 2. Get your outfit ready the night before, dressing the part is still important in a video call 3, find out what kind of interview it will be so you can prepare 4, examine the person specification and your CV/application form and think about what type of questions they will ask you 5, prepare answers for the main questions - for example, why do you want the job? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are the main tasks in this job? Make about three or four points in each answer 6, quote real examples of when you've used certain skills 7, make sure that you understand the question and take your time if you need to think. Don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat the question! 8, sell yourself; no one else is going to! Be positive!
Summer 2021 Careers News 9, prepare some questions to ask at the end of the interview - use it as an opportunity to find out more about the role and the company (don't ask about money or perks just yet!) 10, get feedback on your performance, whether you were successful or not 11, turn off your mobile phone; treat the interviewers with respect and give them your undivided attention. For a video call, ensure that the room is quiet, and that you are not interrupted! 12, keep your answers focused on what you can do for the University employer, not what they can do for you. http://www.apprenticeships.gov.uk Open Days DON’T: COVID-19 All dates subject to confirmation. 1, Be late for the call, or video meeting 2, swear or use slang words 3, slouch in your seat or look uninterested The University of Sheffield 4, lie or exagerate; the interviewer may see through you TBC 5, let your nerves show too much; pause, breathe and think Sheffield Hallam University before answering Autumn Term 2021 TBC 6, be arrogant and assume you've got the job.
