Chartered Accountants Program Capstone MO Capstone Overview The Capstone module integrates knowledge from the technical modules and skills from practical experience in developing the professional competence required to become a Chartered Accountant. While the module requires candidates to apply technical skills and current knowledge, the focus is on the development of competencies that candidates will need to function effectively in the professional environment. The Chartered Accountants Program The Chartered Accountants Program (the Program) comprises two elements: professional accounting education and mentored practical experience with an Approved Training Employer (ATE). Chartered Accountant Admission to membership Achieve Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting (GradDipCA) 12 weeks Integrates technical knowledge and 3 face-to-face workshops professional skills, using complex Workshops (40%), real life case studies, to become Final exam (60%) a well-rounded professional Capstone 12 weeks each Develops technical competence Online learning, through problem-based Optional face-to-face learning using case studies virtual classrooms and scenarios 3 online assessments (20%), Final exam (80%) Management Financial Accounting Audit & Accounting & Applied Assurance & Reporting Finance Taxation Develops professional 3 years approved full competence with Mentored Practical Experience time (or equivalent) guidance from a Concurrent to study Chartered Accountant Accredited undergraduate/masters degree or alternative entry pathway Module summary The Capstone module is based on the analysis and evaluation of business problems. These may include accounting and finance issues, ethics, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting. Candidates attend three compulsory workshops throughout the module. Each workshop builds on activities and research completed to achieve the Capstone learning outcomes. Module outline Page 1

This module brings together and builds on all the learning from the four technical modules and prior studies. It is also assumed that candidates will have developed an understanding of professional skills through their practical experience. Chartered Accountants Program Capstone MO Learning outcomes Introduction The Capstone module integrates knowledge from the technical modules with skills gained from professional work experience to develop the professional competence required to achieve membership of Chartered Accountants ANZ. While the module requires candidates to apply technical skills and current knowledge, the focus is on developing competencies that candidates need in order to function effectively in the professional environment. The competencies developed in Capstone encompass eight professional skill areas: 1. Access data, analyse information and synthesise knowledge. 2. Communicate effectively. 3. Work in and lead teams. 4. Behave ethically. 5. Solve business problems. 6. Think critically. 7. Engage in lifelong professional development. 8. Integrate technical knowledge and professional skills. Candidates are expected to analyse and evaluate relevant issues as they develop professional competence through the various activities in the module. Assumed knowledge The assumed level of technical knowledge is as covered by the four technical modules – Audit and Assurance (AAA), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FIN), Management Accounting and Applied Finance (MAAF) and Taxation (TAX). Learning outcomes 1. Access data, analyse information, and synthesise knowledge By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Identify and clearly state issues to be addressed and specify data required to address them. •• Locate and analyse data using appropriate tools and techniques. •• Interpret and summarise data to construct information, and synthesise information to form responses to the issues. 2. Communicate effectively By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Discuss the purpose of business communications, the needs of the audience and their organisational and cultural environment. •• Demonstrate the ability to elicit information and build rapport using appropriate techniques. •• Demonstrate the provision of business advice appropriate to context and client through effective written and verbal communications. Work in and lead teams By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Identify the factors which influence team dynamics and team leadership. •• Apply practices to ensure continual team effectiveness and demonstrate team leadership. 4. Behave ethically By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Discuss the relevant Code of Ethics. •• Identify ethical dilemmas and apply a structured process to resolve those dilemmas. •• Apply, and act in accord with, the relevant Code of Ethics. 5. Solve business problems By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Apply appropriate problem-solving models. •• Identify broader influences and consequences of the problem-solving process. •• Apply relevant risk-management strategies. 6. Think critically By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Demonstrate key techniques for critical thinking. •• Discuss influences on stakeholder perspectives. •• Apply a sceptical and critical thinking approach to organisational problems and the evaluation of stakeholder perspectives and information. 7. Engage in lifelong professional development By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Identify developments that impact on technical knowledge and professional skill areas. •• Select appropriate professional development, and demonstrate the ability to modify professional practice in response to acquired knowledge. 8. Integrate technical knowledge and professional skills By the end of the module, candidates will have developed competence in a range of business and professional accounting contexts to: •• Integrate and apply technical knowledge and professional skills to solve complex problems with multi-disciplinary solutions. •• Demonstrate an understanding of the strategic planning process. •• Identify the impact of strategic decisions. •• Demonstrate integration through providing value-added strategic advice. Chartered Accountants Program Capstone MO Learning resources and supports The Capstone module has a range of resources and supports available for candidates including: Candidate resource materials (CRM) – after enrolment candidates will receive their CRM, containing an overview, activities workbook, toolkit and tools to assess performance. There is also a section for candidates to include their own learning material. Discussion forums – where candidates can raise and discuss issues with other candidates. The discussion forum is based on candidates helping each other by responding to each others’ posts. The module leaders moderate the forums. Past exams – past exams will be available to download with examiner’s feedback. Mentors – by the time candidates undertake the Capstone module, it is expected they have established networks for professional guidance and support. Mentors play an important role in this. Workshop team – candidates will work in teams during the Capstone workshops. These teams will be a valuable networking and information source for addressing questions and working together. Assessment An overall pass mark of 60% or greater is required to pass the Capstone module. Unlike the technical modules, there is no minimum pass mark required in the final exam. The assessment components are outlined below: Assessment component Contribution to final marks Details Workshop 2 20% Written assessment to be completed within 90 minutes Workshop 3 20% Team presentation assessment task completed in table teams Exam 60% Open-book exam comprising of three (3) compulsory questions based on a case study to be completed within 3.5 hours. Pre-release information is released on myLearning the week following workshop three Total 100% Rubrics used in Capstone In Capstone you will be assessed using four rubrics as follows: 1. Rubric – analysis and evaluation. 2. Rubric – written format. 3. Rubric – presentation. 4. Rubric – providing advice. Two of the rubrics will be used for each assessment, depending on the learning outcomes being assessed.
