GasNetworks On-Demand Tankless Water Heating Program An Update From the Field Matt Dugan KeySpan Energy Delivery 2007 ACEEE MT Symposium
KeySpan Energy Delivery • KeySpan is the largest gas utility in the Northeast • 2.6 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York • Serving the greater Boston metro area, Cape Cod, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and Southern New Hampshire • KeySpan has offered energy efficiency programs since 1997 in the Commercial and Industrial and Residential Markets 4
KeySpan Residential Programs • Residential Conservation Services • Home Analyzer Internet Audit Service • ENERGY STAR® Windows • ENERGY STAR® Programmable Thermostats • ENERGY STAR® Homes • High-Efficiency Heating Equipment • High-Efficiency Indirect Water Heating Equipment • Weatherization Program • Low-Income Weatherization Program • On-Demand, Tankless Water Heating Program 5
GasNetworks • Collaborative of natural gas utilities in New England that promotes energy efficiency to residential and commercial & industrial customers • Participating utilities include gas utilities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and www.gasnetworks.com shortly Rhode Island 6
On Demand, Tankless Water Heating Program • Established March, 2005 •$300 REBATE •0.82 EF or greater with electronic ignition 7
On Demand, Tankless Water Heater Technology •On demand heaters use a burner and heat exchanger to heat water as it flows through the coils •Water flow is dependent on input water temp; when the delta is higher, the flow will be restricted to compensate in temp. 8
Considerations with On Demand Technology • Performance is dependent on climate; water temp • The Northeast requires at least 75ºF degree rise in water temp. during winter • Modulating valves enhance efficiency •Most models need to be direct vented and hard wired • Gas service line must be evaluated *average shower head requires 2.5 gpm 9
On Demand, Tankless Water Heating Market • On demand models account for less than 2% of the market share in water heating equipment • Customer driven market • Significantly more expensive than tank type models • Lifetime twice that of tank type models •Range in efficiencies from 0.69EF (DIY stores) to 0.85EF •Federal Energy Tax credits of $300 for EF 0.80 or greater 10
Benefits •Energy Savings •Space Saving – tank type models requires 16 ft2. •Easier install near point of use •Displace oversized heaters •Modulating valves – less energy with less demand 11
Potential Drawbacks • Gas Pressure Problems • Increased water usage • Increased energy usage • Greater point of use warm-up time (when installed in basement or utility room) 12
Training Program Trade ally training program includes manufacturers: -Bosch -Noritz -Rinnai *Rinnai requires certification training to purchase through their distributor system Training participants include: - KeySpan Value Plus Installer network - Gas Code Inspectors - Heating contractors and plumbers - In home energy auditors - KeySpan residential and commercial sales teams 13
Training Program Training focus: • Proper venting techniques • Gas Piping and sizing • Application and Use • Minimum Flow rates ____________________ • KeySpan and GasNetworks have sponsored more than 12 product training sessions, more than 200 contractors trained • GasNetworks hosted the sixth annual fall conference with more then 300 attendees, Rinnai conducted the certification training 14
Results • More than 200 trade allies trained since March 2005 •GasNetworks participation totals over 1000 as of Mar 2007 •25% of GasNetworks water heating rebates are for on demand models • More contractor trainings planned •Attitudes Survey Completed 15
Attitude Survey • Conducted by Nexus Market Research – Completed October 2006 • Telephone survey of 101 program participants to access consumer reactions to tankless water heaters • Topics Covered: Sources of Awareness, Purchasing Motivations, Satisfaction with Performance, Perceived Energy and Water Savings, Location of New Water Heater, Etc. • Survey will be made available as a part of Conference Materials 16
