“Promoting full personal and social development in caring Christian communities of learning and teaching.” Edmund Rice Schools Trust C.B.S. Thurles Scoil na mBráithre Chríostaí Durlas Co. Tipperary | Founded 1816
Principal’s Welcome Note Dear Parents/Guardian, a Chairde, In choosing CBS Thurles, you are choosing a school that has your son’s best interests at its’ core. Our values are diligence, honesty, teamwork and respect and they serve as the guardrails for the entire school community: students and teachers alike. Academically, we continue to progress and this year we had 20% of our Ms. Kathryn O’Brien students achieving more than 500 points in the Leaving Cert and several Principal students achieving more than 600 points. More generally, the progression to third-level colleges and universities has been a realistic ambition for those boys wishing to continue their further studies. CBS Thurles offers a wealth of extra-curricular and sporting activities and this month sees us opening our new basketball and all-weather pitches to the students. This investment gives a super platform to teams all year round and with such a focus on socialising and being together in the outdoors. I am hoping this prospectus gives you some further insight into our school. Open night typically offers greater opportunities to discover what life is like in CBS Thurles, as it gives us a greater sense of who we are. 2020 has brought many changes to the world around us and in some ways, we Mr. Ollie Kelly now hope the school day brings something resembling normal back into our Deputy Principal routines. The care of the students has taken on a new dimension this year, but this is something we were prepared for and it will co-exist with the other fundamental needs such as teaching, learning and the well-being of the boys. So perhaps, if there was a theme to the year, then it may very well be ‘change’ but be assured, one thing we will not be changing is our commitment to the development of your sons over the next year and beyond. We are ready for change and we are ready for the academic year of 2021 and look forward to welcoming the next generation of CBS boys. Mission Statement Kind regards Thurles C.B.S. is a place of Kathryn O’Brien learning where students Principal, CBS Thurles, An Edmund Rice School are prepared for adult life, kobrien@cbsthurles.ie academically, emotionally, spiritually and culturally. Leaving Certificate Since 2016 and the launch of our Bi-Centenary celebrations that year Physical Education our energies have been focused on the building of an Astro-turf pitch to accommodate our growing list of extra-curricular activities. The school is now offering LCPE (Leaving Cert Physical Education) to senior cycle students for the first time. Previously only a small number of schools could teach LCPE on a pilot scheme, so we are delighted to be able to offer another subject option to the boys. This year we have our first class to formally take PE as a senior cycle exam subject in the school. The PE hall has been fully equipped with Wi-Fi access to support our students with the more technical aspects of the course. LCPE is undertaken as an exam subject and is separate to the typical recreational PE class provided for all students. Students study the theory of PE as well as taking part in physical activities as a performer or choreographer. Our new facilities in the school will give the boys a wonderful opportunity to excel in this subject.
Parents’ Council The Parents’ Council is an active and valued part of our school community. A committee is elected each year to represent the general body of parents and membership of the council is open to parents/guardians of all students attending the school. The Parents’ Council meets regularly during the year. C.B.S. THURLES PROSPECTUS Students’ Council The Students’ Council is a representative body of students elected by the student body.
