Hong Kong & Shenzhen – The world’s tech hub Concept Since 2007, btov has organized a series of invitation-only international journeys to San Francisco, London, Singapore, Moscow, Kiev, Tel Aviv, Dubai & Abu Dhabi among others. The concept of these journeys is to internationalize the btov model and to connect the btov network, the majority of whose members are based in Europe, with venture capital investors, entrepreneurs and corporates in other regions. The btov Discovery Week China 2018 is a journey with a group of btov members to visit both Hong Kong and neighboring Shenzhen. Referring to Britain's effort to forcibly open the Chinese market in the 19th century, Napoleon is quoted as having warned: “When China wakes up, the world will shake.” Indeed, today China is the super power after the USA. With over 7 million residents of all nationalities living in a territory of only 1’100 square kilometers, Hong Kong is the fourth most densely populated region in the world. As a special administrative region of China, Hong Kong maintains a separate political and economic system from the mainland. Last year marked the 20-year anniversary of Hong Kong's handover from British to Chinese rule. While there have been some changes over that period, Hong Kong remains a colorful, chaotic, fantastic place to visit. The greater Shenzhen area is often called the “Silicon Valley of hardware”, as documented in the Wired series “Future Cities”: YouTube link. In many regards, Shenzhen is a city of superlatives – once a market town of 30’000 inhabitants, Shenzhen became China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980 and grew into the world’s 22nd Global Financial Centre. Today, Shenzhen’s population exceeds 11 million and is home to Chinese “unicorns” such as Tencent (link), a Huawei (link) as well as DJI (link), a leading drone firm. 2
