WELCOME MESSAGES The European Golf Association is most grateful to the French Golf Federation and Golf de Morfontaine for hosting the 2021 European Senior Men's and Ladies' Championships. I also extend my thanks to the members for making their superb golf course available for this championship. All competitors will no doubt enjoy such a beautiful venue, and I am sure that the event will be another opportunity for great golf and friendship made and renewed. Best wishes to all competitors for a most happy and successful Championship! Haukur Örn Birgisson President European Golf Association The French Golf Federation is delighted to host the 2021 European Senior Men’s and Ladies’ Championship at Golf de Morfontaine. It is our great pleasure to organize this tournament and welcome players coming from all over Europe, after this so difficult 2020 year. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all players and officials and wish everyone involved a most happy and successful championship. I am sure that both ladies and men players will enjoy the test of golf which the Golf de Morfontaine course always provides. We are very grateful to the Golf de Morfontaine and its members who exceptionally accepted to host a championship on their renowned course. I know that, as usual, the Committee and the members of the Club alongside the ffgolf team will do their best to make all competitors very welcome. Thank you to the EGA for their confidence. Best wishes to all for a most memorable championship. Pascal Grizot French Golf Federation President 2
WELCOME MESSAGES My dear friends, We look forward to hosting the European Seniors Championship with great joy. It is a superb event. I have participated personally in this championship, notably in Spain, so it is a great honour for me to be able to welcome the participants at the club where I have officiated since September 2020. Morfontaine offers a bold technical challenge for all levels of golfer, with its course being fully integrated into the natural topography and landscape character. The difficulty does not lie in its length but rather in the strategy required, and in the diverse range of strokes that can be played. This is what makes the course so appealing and delightful, and I hope you will appreciate its true worth. It is the third time that a European Championship is being played at Morfontaine, but the first time since the Second World War that we are experiencing so much trouble and strife. As we all come together to enjoy our favourite sport, over and beyond the usual competitive spirit, my fervent wish is that this tournament offers you something of a breathing space, and a ray of hope. Sincerely yours, Jean-Baptiste Corre Club Chairman 3

GOLF DE MORFONTAINE The creation of Le Golf de Morfontaine dates back to 15 October, 1913. Armand de Gramont, Duc de Guiche, obtained permission from his father to turn an old polo field in the park of Vallière into a 9-hole golf course for the enjoyment of his friends. He commissioned the distinguished golf architect, Tom Simpson, with whom he shared artistic flair and a love of natural landscapes, to design the course. Simpson became an overnight success, and went on to design or remodel many famous courses, of which his best-known masterpieces are Muirfield and Cruden Bay in Scotland, Ballybunion in Ireland, and New Zealand near London. One of the greats of golf course architecture, to this day he is in a class of his own. After the First World War, Armand de Gramont opened the golf course to members outside his family. In 1927 he created the Golf Club Association with the backing of Edward Esmond, Armand Benedic, René Thion de La Chaume and Edouard de Rothschild. Once again, he entrusted Tom Simpson with the design of a new 18-hole layout known as Le Grand Parcours. It was inaugurated by Simone Thion de la Chaume on 9 October, 1927. A SPORTING TRADITION – AN EXCEPTIONAL COURSE In 1927, Pierre Maneuvrier was the first Champion de France to become a registered member of Morfontaine. By 1930 the club had 350 members of several nationalities. In 1931, the Morfontaine team won the first Gounouilhou Cup (French Interclub Championship 1st series) with Jacques de Saint-Sauveur, Charles de Gramont and Jean Weinbach. The post-war years were illuminated by the successive victories of Lally (née Vagliano) de Saint-Sauveur (including the British Ladies Amateur in 1950), as well as those of Philippe Boulart, Marcel Philippon (golf pro), Odile Semelaigne and, more recently, François Illouz, all prestigious Champions de France. With the death of the Duc de Gramont in August 1962, his son, Henri de Gramont, assumed control along with Philippe Clément, Gérard Boulot, Michel Ecot, Anne-Marie de Chalambert, William Desazars, Edouard de Pourtalès and Jean-Baptiste Corre who would become the Club Chairman. On 1st March, 1987, Morfontaine’s registered members became its owners. From 2005 to 2016, under the leadership of the committee, American architect Kyle Phillips updated the course while retaining its unique character as visualised by Tom Simpson. Morfontaine is regularly ranked within the world’s 50 most beautiful golf courses by leading golf publications (Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Links . . .). In 2020, Golf Digest ranked Morfontaine at No. 7 in its World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses listing, just behind The Old Course at St Andrews. While in GOLF’s 2020-21 ranking of the World’s Top 100 Courses it comes 41st. Morfontaine has hosted numerous international tournaments, including two European Championships, the European Ladies Amateur Championship in 1986, and the International European Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship in 2010. 5
